For me, the song deals with the death of the girl, that's why she gave him her heart to not be forgotten, but Tyler didn't want her to die because he loved her. He made an analogy of jesus dying for love to humanity and did the same with his love one. A love story.

About his mention of "south" in this song. In the song THE JUDGE he mentions going south when he left his house...and later says "i should have stayed inside my house". I personally think "south" has significance for him. Or maybe it doesn't mean anything. I suspect 2 possible meanings. (1) south = hell... like heaven up and hell down...north up and south down. (2) or the popular old saying when things gone south..like when things went wrong...or pun-- when things went to hell- pun combo there lol. EDIT... after writing this I'm strongly suspecting the 2nd one...when people say things have gone south it means things have gone wrong. It's an old saying.

I think the meaning is Tyler witnessing people around him going through what he was going through. He sees the “demon” which may or not be an actual demon, but what is certain is that it represents pain, depression and anxiety. Tyler recognizes this as something he’s been through and could currently be experiencing. He speaks to the demon and would rather be tortured so that he can later write the messages in his songs to help people fight the demon/bad stuff. He begins to realize God died to protect us simarlarly. God packed his heart in Tyler’s “car” so that he may go and do the same for others. They suffer for us.

Love this song. He has such a way of writing.. can be interpretated so many ways. This is some of my interpretations...note interpretation either psychological/religious (in order).... -she's suffering depression or demonic oppression (depending how literal he was). -he has to leave her but KNOWS she's in trouble (gave her heart in the car) so he drives away troubled (thin air...barely feels smile...envies cars heading south where she is in trouble --cause going south means when things go wrong-- where he left her) -once he's gone and unable to support her/ or protect her...the demon took over/depression took over...and she killed herself. -he intuitively knew she killed herself (chills in his bones...breath not his own like the breath was her ghost) and demon told him so (literally). -he says send the demons his way and away from her so that he would die and save her (like Jesus) -don't understand the skin frame line...maybe referring to the skin just being a vessel for the soul...meaning our earthly flesh lives not meant for him to deal with earthly matters??????? Can't wait to see what other commenters say about that line. -now he understands Jesus dying for us...the love. -again the air is thin like he had felt in the beginning...foreseeing and then grief. -morning is coming. Tyler songs ALWAYS refers to these problems at night and morning being the relief and freedom from mental anguish or demonic oppression depending on how literal you want to interpret. --she had given him her heart for safekeeping foreseeing what was going to happen. --he now understands sacrificing for the love of others..like Jesus.

self titled is an absolute masterpiece in and of itself, but just like everything tyler does, there’s a storyline thorough out the album. it always helps to listen in order, but i realize that’s not exactly how your channel is set up ( going off requests ). there’s so much raw emotion that you can get caught up in just thinking about. i agree with you. i don’t think there’s any way to go through life without lying either.

  • @stressman17

I always take the beginning of this song as a reference to the difficulty of his Christian walk. It's hard and he struggles with it. He sees the non-christians heading the other way and is jealous of the easier, more fun route and he wants to give in (crack the door and just fall out...). But then he's reminded of Jesus inside him (reached in the back and buckled up your heart...) And that gives him strength to continue.

You're spot on with how its cool looking back on these songs and seeing how his writing started and thoughts were starting to form - the music itself sounds way different but you can see the lyrics are still cryptic and at the same time very descriptive- kid always had talent - just needed time for it to grow

This is such a deep song in many ways but what I always get from it is that he’s ready to give up, end it but then remembers that the other gave him their heart, their love is with him and to give up is to let down the trust of the person that has given him something so important. Nah you can’t get through life without a lie. Lies are ‘bad’ but there are ‘white’ lies that protect. To protect Peoples feelings at times, times where it’s not quite right to give truthful information like to young children stuff like that. They are all part of life.

There's a movie with ricky gervais and jennifer gardner called THE INVENTION OF LYING. The premise is... a world where nobody lies. The word "lie" does not even exist in the vocabulary because it just doesn't exist. Well, something happens and ricky gervais discovers lying...which works very well cause everyone naturally believes him. It's an interesting movie.

Emilee Bailey I actually have immense respect for people who can be truly honest and not fake things or sugarcoat them just so not ruffle things. Like don’t be mean about it but I truly believe in “it’s not what you say it’s how you say it”. You can still be honest without being a jerk. So when I find someone who does that (which is rare) I have a lot of respect for their boldness to be honest.
