So the people used Holle, Holla ("Holla die Waldfee") or Hulda and many more. *Frigg(a)* has her animal, which is the *Pigeon* which yes, in another fairytale *Ascheputtel* she tryed to protect *Aschenputtel* with her pigeons. *Frigg is Odins wife!* She, Frau Holle/Holla/Hulda/Frigg(a) is Thors Mother. Her dedicated plant is *der Hollunder Baum* also *der Holler* called. At the *Rauhenächte* and the gates to '*Anderswelt* shortly opens for a duration of days, (root of helloween!?) the *wild hunt* or *Wilde Jagd* beginns. I really appreciate this video, Jacob. I just relocated from Bangkok to Berlin and kinda lost and feel alone of where to begin my Pagan journey since I am still exploring Paganism (I can feel the connection but still confused) and all of the pagans I knew was in Thailand. This video really help setting me back on track with my pagan journey. It gives me a pinned point start of where to look at and what to read into. (You know, there is almost no paganism traces left in Berlin :/) I truly believe that your 'on the go' series will help a lot of people around the world explore paganism in their own ways.

Makes me wonder how many bodies rolled right back down that hill when they finally made it to the castle.

Question: During your time in Germany, will you do an episode dedicated to a Celtic pagan site? I don't even know if there are any, but if there was, would you? i know this channel is based on Heathenry but you do have Irish ancestry I think you said, so a Heathen offering to your Celtic ancestors might make for a really cool video!

My German side is from Swabia and indeed I can confirm there are MANY Celtic Pagan sites in both Swabia and Bavaria. For example, Ipf (mountain near one of my ancestral villages, Bopfingen) and Heuneburg. Many sites have been found dedicated to the god Grannus, a Celtic healing god whose name was also attested among the Gauls. More north along the Rhine, there are evidences of the Matronae which is very Celtic (although parallel to Germanic Norns and Disir). I don't see our Deities as "jealous" or anything like that, especially since there are more commonalities than anything, so I see no problem doing offerings and honoring both....although not mixing them in the same at least having authenticity. My paternal side also has some Spanish from the Northwest (Celtiberian), while my maternal side is Flemish, so like many others I have this Germanic + Celtic side.

Some really good content, and fascinating topic. An interesting read is a book by James C. Russell: The Germanization of Early Medieval Christianity and, the book: The Early Germans (2nd Ed), by Malcolm Todd.

I'm from Germany, the north sea to be more specific and during all my research all I could find was that the old religions were brought to Germany where they've been adopted. I've found minimal sources on the gods (of course the three matrons) but also a god that is ought to have been called Thukun (Don't come for me I don't have my papers at hand this god is old enough that no one even the language spoken at the time is long-forgotten). So this has been really interesting for me as it always as If (my personal perception) Germany as in Bayern, Berlin, lower saxony or western pomerania (The names sound so much nicer in english than in german btw), never really had it's own culture and religion before Rom and the christianization, whilst Italy, Sweden, Czech, Russia or Ireland seemed to have preserved so much of their roots and knowledge. Please continue with this awesome series and maybe please you could share some of your recommendations source-wise? Great video. The time of the germanic tribes is my favorite period of history. Even after Charlemagne's massacre of Verden and the destruction of the irminsul near Teutoburg in 782 there were still small revolts, the last great revolt was the Stellinga from 841 to 843. 6:35 so, its not the Gaelic Wars, its the Gallic Wars pronounced "gahl-lik", and the Gauls were Celtic not Germanic. There were Germanic peoples in Gaul but they weren't called Gauls, I believe. Edit: pronunciation might not seem important but in this case it is. Gaelic refers to the Irish, Scots and Manx whilst Gallic refers to the Celts of ancient Gaul and Germania.

Correct, and there were also Celtic Gauls and Belgae on the eastern side of the Rhine as well, although not in large numbers.

Just one thing, the passage you mentioned of Caesar, he is talking about the Gauls, not the Germans.

What the...? I was born in Landshut and lived there most of my life, but moved out closer to the alps in spring last year. I say moved, it's really rehab, but certain narcissist brother makes me not want to return. This is so surreal to watch, and because I miss this city so much, not quite easy either. Usually you see KZreadrs go all over the world to places you don't know or have never heard of. Man.

I'm wondering a lot about how the historical relationship between the Germanic world and the Celtic world as they do seem to be quite closely related especially in southern Germany many finds there are distinctly Celtic and the Roman sources will often use words like Celtic and Germanic interchangeably this is mostly due to roman ignorance but the archology does show that these two cultures were very closely related.

Remember that my ancestors (my family has lived on the uk for more than a tjousand years) the anglo saxons were also germanic pagans ..

Being in Mecklenburg (northeast Germany), that would most likely have been Lutheranism....BUT, as with my German roots from the other side of the country (southwest, and Catholic), I am sure you can look back at different traditions, folklore and legends....and easily see they carry many remnants of Heathenry that survived long after conversion. What were certain traditions your family practiced? Did you notice these were different from what you saw non-German Christians practicing? etc.. These sort of questions and the memories you may have through that will be a very enlightening experience for you and tell you alot.

Question! Was Germany consider as Vikings as well since they were pagans? I’ve been looking for research about this. Some say they were some say they weren’t.

No they were never vikings, most of present-day Germany was Christian at this time.

They worshiped similar gods and were a war based culture but they didn't go raiding at sea which is what the term Viking (sea raider) means. Charlemagnes massacre of Verden near the extersteine was actually only a little over a decade before the Viking attack on lindisfarne.

@@corytucker6668 There's research/connections that suggest that the raid on Lindisfarne was in retaliation for Charlemagne. Lindisfarne was built for a monk or bishop or whatever he was that was close to Charlemagne and urged him to slaughter the pagans.

I think the gods can understand that Christianity is the dominant religion in our culture, and saying goodbye to your spouse's father is very important, as well as supporting your spouse in their loss. Being on christian church grounds makes you no less pagan. and any god that would hold fulfilling your obligations to your spouse and honoring a deceased relative against you may not be worth following.

I've been very confused on this for a very long time. Did the Germanic people worship the Norse Gods? Were they Norse?

Similar beliefs. But Nordic beliefs and practices differed as well as the gods. As in the Nordic peoples had both Aesir and Vanir deities, theres no proof the Continental Germanic tribes did. We know Eostre was a deity worshipped by the Angli and others but she was not known to the Nordic tribes. At least by that name. I personally and some others as well believe she was probably Freya.
