The town is getting hip very quickly. In town prices have nearly doubled in the last two years. And there are no rental properties. In this country, things are getting worse everywhere - the rich are getting richer, and the poor poorer. However however there are some points where it is particularly accelerated and obvious, and Vermont - Brattleboro in particular, is one of those spots. We've long known that cities and suburbs suck. But suddenly disease, climate and politics are causing such huge internal migration that Vermont might need a Southern wall! Think Massachusetts will pay for it?

I partially grew up near Brattleboro, in South Newfane (also grew up the rest of the time in NYC). Brattleboro's changed a lot, but Sam's has been there since the 1970's when I was a kid. Other things have come and gone, but I love Mocha Joe's Coffee and the Brattleboro Food Co-op. My favorite bookstore, The Book Cellar, was a Brattleboro institution until it closed down. Without those places, my commutes in between South Newfane and Amherst (via Brattleboro) during my college years and my on-campus apartment at Hampshire College wouldn't have included ANY good coffee, good books or good food. Miss Vermont a LOT sometimes for sure. Great area to grow up in. Was so sad when Hurricaine Irene hit it back in 2011.
