Today we take a brief look at the last Stuart Monarch Queen Anne. She certainly had a difficult life and her experiences as queen were chaotic. Nevertheless, many important events took place during her time as queen and she remains an important figure in the history of Britain. I hope you all are doing well and thank you for your patience between uploads. I ran into multiple issues due to upgrading equipment, but hope to have everything locked down at this point in order to upload more regularly. I want to thank you for your interest in the video/channel and I hope I was reasonably able to do Anne's story justice. As always if I catch any errors, or any are brought to my attention, I will add them to the errors and corrections section of the video description. I did catch one small error already, in that I referred to Anne's brother Edgar as her elder brother when in fact he was her younger brother. This had been added to said section. Cheers!

I also grew up around death and lots of my family members died while I was still young. It has given me a perspective most people don’t get to have, and I have valued my family more because of it. Everyone does, do not put off spending time with the people you love. Anne is an interesting queen, in that on the one hand she was somewhat unremarkable, though more notable than her sister and brother in law. On the other hand she saw a huge change to the country, basically kickstarting the Great Britain train when James I couldn't.

I think she died too early, which left her unappreciated. She is seen as dominated by Sarah Churchill, but their catastrophic falling out proves Queen Anne was her own woman and not just reliant on other people. In fact, I think it’s Sarah that was more reliant. If her husband was not so successful in the War of the Spanish Succession, she would have been kicked out earlier.

I began studying the royals back in 2003. Back then, none of these programs existed. It's nice to see people take an interest in what I found interesting all those years ago. The first historical fiction I read was Mary, Bloody Mary by Carolyn Meyer. After that. I was hooked. Anyone interested learning about these people, I will advise to start out reading kid's books on these people. Then, gradually grow to adult books. Bios on them can be confusing if you don't know much about them.

I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever heard of having a more tragic, lonely, stressful and painful life than Queen Anne. To lose 17/18 children, by age 35?! Basically physically incapacitated by the physical trauma of pregnancy, childbirth, chronic stress and grief, widowed, surrounded by false friends, no loving (and few living) family members, and constant awareness of the danger she was in as being a (figure)head of a kingdom. I’m exhausted from just thinking about it. The fact she didn’t just throw herself into a moat to drown is astonishing- maybe her religious beliefs were what kept her going. Or a sense of duty? This was a woman who had iron in her spirit. But it must have been miserable, having those circumstances. I’m in awe.

The Anglican church, the church of England, is not actually Protestant. It’s called Anglo-Catholicism. Presbyterian Church, the Church of Scotland, however, is Protestant. Along with Roman Catholicism and the Russian, Greek and eastern orthodox churches, the Anglican church considers itself catholic. We consider ourselves to have reformed the church rather than protested against it. We have bishops and celebrate the Eucharist. We have high, middle and low church. Low church is more similar to Protestantism. I very much appreciate your posts. Please keep up the good work.

  • @boredlawyer3382

Whatever the Anglican Church considers itself internally, politically, Britain has been a Protestant country since the Tudors. There is a law passed right after the Glorious Revolution, still in force today, that a Catholic may not sit on the throne of Britain. No prohibition on Protestants. After Queen Anne died, the succession skipped over some 50 Catholics to settle on the Lutheran George Ludwig of Hanover, who became King George I. And, as the video points out, James II was deposed because he was a Catholic, and replace with William and Mary, both Protestants. William was a Dutch Calvinist. So the British did not want a Catholic, but were fine with other Protestants. Who then were accepted in the Church of England with little discussion. Again, this is more political than theological. The British were afraid of Catholic tyranny, and did not have that fear of Lutherans, Calvinists and Presbyterians.

If you mean her brother-in-law, he was Dutch, although his mother was the daughter of Charles I of England and Queen Henrietta Maria. All the royal families were all related to eachother in one way or another.

She remains the only royal who very little is known. When she died, her history was erased. Mad Queen Anne. It was a huge challenge for Olivia Coleman.
