    Hello Hello. Today we take a quick look at the first Hanoverian King of Britain, George I. He was certainly an interesting individual and had some contentious events happen during his reign, but he was nevertheless able to successfully put forward his claim to be King and defend his position on the throne. I hope you all are doing well, and thank you for your interest in the channel/video. As always, if I catch any errors or if any errors are brought to my attention, I will add them to the errors and corrections section of the video description. Thank you and have a great day. Cheers!

    This is a very interesting video as it marks the beginning of the regal usage of the name, George. What is curious about this entire episode is that King George I of Great Britain was the son of Sophia of the Palatinate, who was subsequently, the daughter of Elizabeth Stuart(aka, the Winter Queen of Bohemia) and who was the only surviving daughter of King James I of England. Quite interesting how the fortunes of dynasties can change by the consequences of unforeseen events.

    I was surprised to see this one pop up in my feed so soon but nonetheless very excited! I’ve got my own interests in the crown and am interested in different eras for different reasons, and as what’s always most interested me about the Hanovers was their interpersonal relationships with one another it was really nice to get a stronger political background along with the interpersonal drama that’s the dynasty’s main draw for me. It was a politically fascinating time in general which also helped a lot. Thanks again!!

    Well that depends, Charles III is of his mother's house _Windsor_ rather than that of his father's, so it's not set in stone that someone always belong to their paternal house. IMO it only makes sense that an heir inherits the house of their mother if that mother is the friggin' reigning Queen, i.e. clearly the higher ranking of the two parents. I wish Victoria had done so with her heirs, because who the heck would want to replace the pleasant sounding _Hanover_ with the grotesque sounding "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha"?

    The video shows a lot of beautiful views of landscapes, castles and churches, which the author of the video obviously considers as so iconic and well-known that they do not need to be named or explained. This is surely true about the Houses of Parliament in London, which are shown at minutes 27:41, 29:48, and 33:29, but most of the other images I did not recognize, and I suspect that many other viewers won't either. Therefore, I make a contribution to solve at least a few of the many riddles: Minute 01:45 to 01:48 shows the equestrian statue of Duke Frederick William in front of Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. This duke was Elector of Brandenburg 1640-1688, known as "The Great Elector" (Der Große Kurfürst), and he did not belong to the Hannover Welfen dynasty, as the spoken comment might suggest, but rather to the Hohenzollern dynasty. - Minutes 03:49 to 04:15 undoubtedly show St Lorenz church in Nürnberg, however it remains unclear how this image is related to the comment which is spoken at that moment. - Minutes 18:07 to 18:15 show the equestrian statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy on Heroes' Square (Heldenplatz) in Vienna. I'd be glad to learn more about the other beautiful views shown in this video.

    20:37 the attempt to take the crown of Bohemia by the “winter queen” was not a failed attempt necessarily it was more of a very short lived holding the crown. Hence, being called the winter queen because they only held the crown for what a mounted to one winter. Sorry to be nitpicky. I love your videos you do a wonderful job. • @BriefHistoryOfficial

    @BriefHistoryOfficial

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello. Hatton was one the sources that I used to formulate the video so I probably can only give you the same information that you have. Looks like he was sent with his eldest younger brother in earnest for hanoverian contingents that were to come. Hatton writes "During 1682 the necessary legal drafting was completed. Primogeniture was to be decreed by Ernst August's will; and in July 1683 emperor Leopold, conscious of his need for military aid against the Turks, consented to this against a promise of Hanoverian contingents, at Ernst August's own cost, for the campaigns on the Habsburg eastern frontier. George and Gustchen were sent as volunteers to the siege of Vienna of 1683 as an earnest of the Hanoverian contingents to come." Tim Blanning in his book "George I, The Lucky King" writes: "Less than a year after his marriage in November 1682 he was off to the wars again, this time to fight in a battle of world-historical significance. On 11-12 September 1683 a multinational force commanded by King John Sobieski of Poland-Lithuania comprehensively defeated the Turkish army that had been besieging the Habsburg capital for the past two months.......In the years that followed, the Habsburgs and their German allies pursued a reconquista of Hungary, most of which had been under Ottoman rule since 1541. Georg Ludwig and his Hanoverian contingents played an active and often distinguished part, notably in 1685 at the Battle of Gran (Esztergom) on the Danube and in the ensuing capture of Neuhäusel (Nové Zámky). Norman Davies writes in his book,"Geoge II, Not Just A British Monarch" the following: "In 1683, while the French invested Luxembourg, a vast Ottoman army laid siege to Vienna. To end that siege, the winged hussars of King John Sobieski of Poland charged down the Kahlenberg Hill to smash the sultan’s camp and entered into legend. Georg Ludwig, an Imperial officer, witnessed the victory, and would certainly have told his son about it." Thanks for the comment. Cheers
