A Brief History of Gore

Bloody video games.
They've caused their fair share of drama over the years, with violent action and gory killing attributed to all kinds of societal harm.
These days, a certain amount of bloodshed is tolerated - but not so long ago a splash of red pixels was all it took to start a fuss.
Join me as I prepare to dive knee deep into blood, guts, and video games.
Covered are classic horror titles such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the Atari 2600 and torture-themed light gun game Chiller: action shooters such as the digital rendition of Charles Bronson in Death Wish 3, Ikari Warriors; Decapitation in Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior, demon slaying in Splatterhouse and exploding drug barons in the 32-bit Narc.
Tecmo Knight was a decapitation-laden beat-em up, Space Gun and Beast Busters rail shooters with liberal dismemberment and copious blood.
The dawn of Full Motion Video spawned games like Night Trap, and the realistic digitised sprites of Mortal Kombat: with the violent fatalities courting controversy - and leading to the formation of the ESRB.
MK also spawned a number of clones, including Blood Warrior, Time Killers and Eternal Champions on the Mega Drive and Mega CD.
The rise of the FPS genre in the 90s followed in the footsteps of the violent shooters of the late 80s - such titles would cement the word 'gib' into the gaming lexicon.
Doom saw enemies explode into a red paste, Rise of The Triad flung eyeballs at the screen with its ludicrous gibs - and Quake features the first seen polygonal gibs.
Gibbing became the hallmark of the genre, with most later examples permitting the reduction of your opponents into fleshy chunks - at least until ragdoll physics took hold.
Meanwhile horror adventure games such as Phantasmagoria and Harvester took advantage of CD-ROM's storage to use realistic death scenes - and survival horror games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill saw bloody scenes to ramp up tension.
Both Carmageddon and Thrill Kill found controversy in the late 90s, with the former featuring reckless driving and pedestrian slaughter, and the latter with sadistic thrill kill finishing moves.
Meanwhile, FPS games had matured to the point where a little gore was accepted: the cerebral bore in Turok 2, the intagib rifle of Unreal Tournament and the dismemberment of Soldier of Fortune.
Games in which you play a psychopath proved more disruptive: such as the Grand Theft Auto series, Postal 2, or murder-em-up Manhunt and its sequel.
Post Manhunt, there's been little outrage: Half-Life 2 is very gory in places, as is Resident Evil 4 - but only the more gruesome deaths such as a chainsaw decapitation caused a stir.
Recently, mainstream games such as Gears of War, Dead Space and Fallout 3 have all featured gory violence, but such bloodshed is now deemed acceptable.
As with the revived Fallout series, we've also seen the return of a few other gory classics, such as the 2010 remake of Splatterhouse, the return of brutal fatalities in Mortal Kombat 9, and yet more ludicrous gibs in ROTT 2013.
Some games use violent scenes as part of their story, such as No Russian in Modern Warfare 2 - or in the key moments of Spec Ops: The Line.
Hotline Miami is a top-down exercise in hyper-violence, that sometimes gives the player pause for their actions, asking: 'do you like hurting other people?'
The God of War series is a prime example of a spectacle fighter: in which you brutally slay, decapitate or gouge out organs from an entire bestiary of mythological beings.
Similarly stylish is 2009's Madworld: with comic-book visuals inspired by Sin City, the monochrome combat is liberally splashed with huge amounts of crimson as you perform sadistic finishing moves.
Gore is par for the course in the horror genre - Left 4 Dead features hordes of zombies and a host of ways to despatch them: Killing Floor offers similarly gory co-op, Call of Duty: World At War introduced Nazi Zombies was the goriest COD, and the one which introduced zombies to the series - and every detail of your gory destruction is captured in Sniper Elite 2, and its Nazi Zombie Army variant: with the awesome slow-motion terminal arc of bullets, paired with gratuitous X-Ray vision: tearing flesh, piercing organs and smashing bone.
No doubt, rent flesh and rivers of claret are an arousing visual - appealing to human instinct at a very basic level, and acting as an effective way to communicate injury.
Taken to extremes, flinging gore at a player is a caricature of carnage - reassuring the concious mind that it's all just a game.

DOOM 2016 doesn't have anywhere near the amount of gore some older games do. I'm not trying to shit on DOOM 2016, but it wasn't original in terms of gore at all. Most of DOOM 2016's gore is inspired by Brutal Doom anyway.

The most gory game that I played was Dwarf Fortress. In that game, you can sever limbs, punch out teeth, chop off heads, and then pick them all up and put them in your bag. It's ASCII graphics aren't revolutionary, but it's the implication of violence that makes it an extremely gory. It's the only game I know where you can blind a man using in-game fighting mechanics.

Yeah it's interesting. I think it's all about the context of violence, rather than the actual violence itself. Even graphically realistic displays of violence seem tolerable as long as there is a justifiable context behind them. In contrast, graphically subpar games displaying violence can ruffle feathers if the context is unsettling enough, such as being a torturer, mass shootings, or terrorism.

There's a reason for that, the blood and gore in most games is just a means to an end in the story-line. Not Hatred, the player doesn't eviscerate someone in order to save his family. Violence is the endgame. Not only games like Hatred create parental butt-hurt and fuel for FOX NEWS' propaganda machine, the semi-indie gaming industry (not talking about you, EA, YOU PIECE OF SHIT !) doesn't want heat like that on their future work because it limits what they can do in games they're developing and the sales they're able to rake in. But then again, Destructive Creations (it's Creator) made this game as an art piece a la Damien Hirst (the guy who put a cow's head in a glass box full of flies and called it art). In a way they're saying:"If this game offends you, then it's not for you."

  • @Gakulon

    @Gakulon

    7 жыл бұрын

I feel like if Hatred were better made, then more people would like it. The execution animations were nice, if a little tame, and the way the movement and shooting works may be fun. It's just that the game is ruined by the fact that it looks like it was written by an angsty teenager who worships the Columbine shooters

I think that the guys from Extra Credit summed the matter brilliantly. The point isn't that Hatred was violent..infact it wasn't that violent. The fact is that it was sadistic, without a purpose, a message or being silly. It was sadistic, which is different than being gorey It's not like in GTA, where you do what you do because you want to earn money, it's the objective of the mission or simply because it's fun to have the police chase you; and it's not like in Spec Ops, where there is a story-telling purpose behind the violence. The whole premise of hatred is: you're a "normal" guy who hates people, and you like to see them suffer. That's it. And it was played out as 100% serious, no silly or humorous stuff in it. I personally think that it makes a huge difference.

Perhaps then go on to mouse-aiming and why it was so hard to program up-down aiming as well as right-left aiming. Why do some games have crosshairs while some don't? Ghost of Tsushima is an absolutely amazing game that has one of the most violent juxtapositions I’ve ever seen. The entire game is BEAUTIFUL. The combat is GRUESOME. You’re cutting your enemies to ribbons, poisoning them and making them puke up their own blood, your character will literally get SHOWERED in enemy viscera. And yet, once the fight is over, you clean your sword, stow it, pull out your flute, and go back to making calming music. I love it.

maybe because blood and guts aren't everything to a video game? because tone and feeling are more important and do much more for the feeling of impact and violence than blood and guts and limbs flying off everywhere? honestly i can play the old classics and get a better feel of me destroying opponents mercilessly than most of todays bloodbaths. even god of war is just meh after awhile. the enemies crowd around you and theres finishing moves and such but its all… just… not important. if theres gore in a video game it should be the extras because thats all they are in games, visual effects, cut scenes, quick time events. i don't mind gore but when games try to out gore each other it gets unsettling but not disturbing.

Good fun game, and a very interesting one at that. Not many 4-way 3D fighters that I know of, and especially none with such intricate combat as it has. It's actually a bit surprising how deep it is, and how high the skill-ceiling is. Worth a try, if you ever have time for videogames outside research!

If Conker fell from too great of a height, he exploded into a gib gore fest where you can get to see his still beating heart before using one of his squirrel tails. There is a game over sequence where his entrails are in a bag discovered by the Panther King's minions. Also don't forget the bazooka and chainsaw kills in multiplayer.

And that is what those games are showing you. They take off that curtain of safety, i have before played spec ops and loading screens said "To kill for yourself is murder, to kill for your country is duty but this isn't real why should you care?" and "You are still a good person" . It shows you at that particular moment what you enjoy seeing, death of other people the same game gives the "enemies" have moments that they get personality which for example was this, you are on a roof top in this desert land with no escape and have to move on, there are two guys infornt of you speaking; "Do you have any gum" "Yeah, its my last one." "No man i don't want it if its your last one!" "Just take it ***** would steal it anyway.." "Well fuck that guy.." *laughs* "Man i just sometimes forget how beatiful the scenery here is.." You shoot them. Its not a cutscene or anyhting, you could have shot those guys when you first heard the word "Do" . It makes you feel what you just did. There has to be games that shows you the disgusting side of killing someone, the guilt of it.

***** Care to expand on what you mean by "...the point of those kinds of games"? I'm not challenging you or anything; I genuinely want to know what you have to say. In my own experience, those kinds of games have always been kind of... "Pointless"? (for lack of a better term). What's the message - "Killing is bad"? Well no shit. If the idea is that character death holds a lot of weight (such as in Telltale's games) then that's all well and good and I see no problems. It adds that extra layer of drama and complexity to a story. Games like Spec Ops: The Line, however, just come off as passive-aggressive nonsense to me: "You just killed a bunch of people, but that's okay. They weren't real, so why should you care?"

  • @StrunDoNhor

    @StrunDoNhor

    9 жыл бұрын

***** (Apologies for these big comments, by the way - I have a lot to say on topics like this). Indeed. Again, if it's for story purposes then I have no real issues. Spec Ops: The Line _ultimately_ accomplished what it set out to do: The main character underwent a *tremendous* psychological guilt-trip for his actions, and the imagery helped to solidify this. It wasn't exactly subtle about it, though. (Compared to something like *Shadow of the Colossus*, which also managed to create an emotionally draining experience, but without resorting to forced drama or theatrics). If you don't mind the tangent,Spec Ops: The Line felt like it was addressing a problem that never existed. The entire game was essentially a critique that modern shooters are removed from reality, and provide players with unrealistic, morally dichotomous escapist fantasy. This is why I asked what you meant when you said, "...you don't understand the point..." From my perspective, the point of Spec Ops wasn't necessarily to tell a compelling story about the atrocities of war - it was to force non-guilty people (i.e. average gamers) to feel guilty for engaging in fantasy violence.

TotalMetalJacket EA said it failed to meet their sales expectations. People Can Fly were ready to start work on a sequel when EA shut them down. With People Can Fly stating that EA's "sales expectations" were unreachable for a brand new IP. Most likely, EA was expecting sales along the lines of Epic's Gears of War.

Am I the only one that thinks fps games should bring back a certain amount of dismemberment? As much as I love rag doll effects I kinda miss how in certain games like cod world at war allowed you to dismember people with explosives or a shotgun

I know it can't really be classified as "gore", but the scariest video game weapon I've ever used was the Particle Cannon from Wolfenstein '09. Just... poof. Nobody complained since you're killing Nazis but I remember just feeling shocked. That's also why I'm psyched for The New Order as well, can't wait to see what they did with that.

With "poof" you mean the same effect of the gluon gun from Half-Life (it interacts with the object's inner stability by firing gluons [really existent particles that interact with one of the four forces of the universe, strong interaction, the one that holds the nulceus of every atom togheter], killing the target by dissolving all the connections between its very ATOMS. This means vaporizing the target, and the guy that gives the gun to you, a fellow scientist, can't even bring him with using the weapon, so he gives Gordon the gun because he has no problem using it) ?

How is violence in a game going to force someone to be violent? If you can't handle playing a video game, don't play it. Just like cigarettes or booze. Can't handle it? Don't do it.

You know there were actual studies that supported the notion that games could induce violence. Of course, those were all bollocks but in the 90s and very early 2000's people bought it. That aside I don't think people care about films as much, because films are utterly passive. You park your ass somewhere and you watch violence happen. But films don't put the choice of who, or if someone dies in your hands. So the public got up in arms about it.

My personal favorite gory games involved the Halo Franchise. I wasn't a fan of Mortal combat or intense amounts of dismemberment. But seeing various colors of blood from the dark purple of the elites, blue of the grunts, brown/green from flood, and my favorite, the neon orange from *Hunters*. When not in a fire fight, I would be 'painting' by whacking the bodies with my melee till I got bored or the area was drenched enough to put up a wet floor sign.
