I'm totally off short stories, but I've read Clemens Meyer's novel "Bricks & Mortar" and it's pretty good. Ironically I do have a short story collection of his called "Dark Satellites".

Mmm, perhaps I will bump it up in the TBR queue then. I likewise don't read anywhere near as many short stories as I used to.

Some beautiful editions Curtis! Elena Knows and Tomb of Sand are two of my favorite reads this year so I think you’re in for a treat. I’m reading Iceland’s Bell by Halldor Laxness at the moment - his magnum opus Independent People is a real door stopper- and have that exact edition of World Light as possibly my next Laxness. What a result getting such a great gift from your manager, can’t understand why a day racing wouldn’t have appealed to you 🤔

Goodness me you really have read everything, Jo. What a coincidence you're also reading Laxness. The New Yorker did say Independent People was his masterpiece however I could only see the UK Vintage edition available on Amazon, hence why I went for World Light in the US version (I didn't realise Independent People was also a doorstopper). My manager must sense that I'm always on the verge of leaving/looking for other jobs so every so often she throws me a bone like this. Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in! I will perhaps tell everyone else I went on the racing day and keep what I actually did with the money Booktube's little secret ;)

Not at all! Usually pure luck I’ve read something when people do hauls 😉 Perhaps let you manager catch you looking at the want ads to elicit further gifts/bribes but as you work for a university press, I’m surprised book vouchers wasn’t an option!

Hi, Curtis. In the US there is an online used book store named Abe Books. I pretty much gave up on physical copies of books once I got my Kindle. I dislike physical books because they take up too much space. Also, I am a text collector, not a book collector therefore a physical copy of a book means nothing to me. However, oftentimes I can find physical copies of books at Abe Books that are much more inexpensive than ebook editions. Also, Abe Books is a good place to find out of print books. I love plays and have found many collections of plays by Lanford Wilson for just a few dollars. And, 99.9% of the time the shipping is free. Are there online used book stores in Great Britain like this? When you mentioned the chunkiness of the Laxness novel it reminded me how seemingly out of sync I am with the typical BookTuber. I cringe at the thought of reading long books. That's not to say I don't read them. This year I've read four books that were over 500 pages. But, I can say that with all but Look Homeward Angel they would have profited from a good editor. Look Homeward Angel had one of the best editors ever, Maxwell Perkins. The problems I have with large books is almost always I am through with the story before the author is. I simply do not have time to slog through unnecessary material for the sake of staying in the world of the book. I do not read to immerse myself in a book for long periods of time. Reading is only one aspect of who I am as a person. I read therefore I am a reader. But, I do not identify as someone who would rather curl up with a book than do anything else. I love the adventure a well-rounded approach to life offers. You held up Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain. That has been on my radar for over thirty years. I may drag my copy out and start reading it. I've started it before but never got too far. Interesting book haul, Curtis. Take care. I look forward to your next video!

I use ABE books (which is owned by Amazon) sometimes as well to find rarer books. I'm glad I've prompted you to pick up The Magic Mountain again, and hopefully you get further this time -- I suspect your edition is much nicer than mine? Also, couldn't disagree with you more about physical books taking up too much space. That's precisely why I love them! Thanks for the comment, SB.
