    You know what's sad? This game doesn't get enough praise. This is a story about a person through life to death. It so meaningful and it has so many lessons. But it is still rather unknown. Other than BTR2, the series is rather left in the dark. We need this story to be spread.

    So I have my own interpretation of bit.trip fate that may be a little darker and a little different from what most people think. I actually think the timbletot represents negative/suicidal thoughts, and also a negative distorted self reflection of CV himself, as represented with none of the other characters really reacting to the timbletot directly nor being able to help commander video in the fights against him nor any of the boss fights as it's something only he's able to do, I think bit.trip fate is a story about depression and eventual suicide due to the level names, being: determination, patience, desperation, frustration, anger, and finally "fall". With commander video fighting the "timbletot" and his minions being an inner fight with himself and his own psyche with the path he's taking (the line the player moves on) being this winding and curving downward spiral. I think that in the game the powerups being the friends you met along in bit.trip runner represent his friends being there to support him and help drown out all the negative thoughts happening all around him but not always having the time to be there at all times. I think by the second world boss fight he was trying to wade off the negative thoughts with the positive ones and good things happening in his life, eventually the negative feelings overwhelm him and take control over him making him resent the timbletot as he thinks he's the source of all his problems and subsequently hating himself in the process. Now this is just my interpretation, and I don't think there's really one true right or wrong way of interpreting this series story. So if anyone has their own interpretations of bit.trip games that is different from the norm I'd love to hear them. I always found this game series infinitely fascinating so altered perspectives are really nice to see.

    I like to believe that after the end of FLUX, when CV finally lets go of his life, he's actually being "reset." He's letting go of everything, all of his memories, his physical life, to move to the next. After that, the events of BEAT, CORE, VOID, and RUNNER happen again, and instead of CV going down a dark path in FATE, the events of RUNNER2 and RUNNER3 happen, plus whatever's after that. Some say RUNNER2 is in between RUNNER and FATE, but I just wanted to share what I thought.

    Then going to VOID itself...where CV's an utter monster stomping around hurting feelings. It takes a combined group of CV's to finally get him to back down. While he does learn to tone himself down...his ego is still very present. The void, while it gets cut down from time to time, never stops growing, and without any checking, it can easily get out of control. And what better to grow an ego than the events of Runner? Why else would he pursue Timbletot, who's portrayed as a failure?

To put it simply, Commander Video never really beat void. He was able to tone it down enough so he wasn't being a jerk to every and anyone at random...but in the end, it was his ego that got him killed. I bought Flux shortly after it came out, having not really played any of the prior ones. (The Core demo got lots of play from me.) I especially loved the music in Perception. After becoming aware of the story, I realized the final boss of Catharsis is metaphorically and literally yourself. I began to think of "the wall" as more of a mirror, reflecting everything that touches it. The only inputs come from you. The mirror is completely passive in this instance.

  • @Strakester

    @Strakester

    Жыл бұрын

    "The wall" final boss has a much more poignant meaning if you're old enough to remember Atari games, and what happens after you beat Breakout. In the original Breakout, if you destroy all the bricks, they all respawn once. Destroy them again, and... nothing. You're left to bounce a ball around in an empty room forever, until you run out of patience. There's nothing left to do. The game is over. It's time to accept that and move on.

    I believe the first bit of solar system imagery in Cartharsis' META mode was a simple image of CV's egotism that led to his downfall. The large solar-body was mostly black, and the smaller bodies revolving it were color coded in a similar fashion as CV's friends were. Linking things back to FATE, CV's friends as power-ups revolved around him in a similar fashion. FATE was an episode of CV trying to heal his wounded pride, and he dragged his friends along for the ride...but that's clear already.

(Shame BIT.TRIP Flux was removed from the fucking Steam store because the port was completely broken.) Good night our little commander... May you rest easy.

    It has three difficulty modes, and if you skip the checkpoints normal mode is slightly tougher than most of runner but never quite gets to 1-11 or 3-10 difficulty. Checkpoints help a lot, though, so even on hard you don't have to do several minutes of perfect platforming. You can skip them for a big point bonus though!

    Another part of FATE that really points to CV's ego being the real problem were the messages in that game: many of them were lies. Many of the things it said he didn't have...he did, and would have had more if he hadn't chased Timbletot. And what about the path itself? Why was CV's movement so restricted at this point in life? And it was Timbletot that set it, not CV. Video got played like a fiddle the entire game: his feelings got so hurt that he never thought to get off the path.

    Coming to this video after looking at the storyline for BTR2, I will now provide a deeper analysis involving all 7 games using info from this video and of analysis of BTR2. Beat is where the protagonist is being born. Nothing much is happening, and they're just learning the basics of how life might be. There is a bit of foreshadowing however in one of the stages. I will explain why it is such later. Core is where they learn the controls of the body that they were given. They also learn more about the new world they're thrust in. They're supported by their friends and family until they finally can operate independently. Void is when they start interacting with other people similar to them in the world. Interactions at first were not great, when they bully others and gets themselves bullied in return. After a while though, they manage to learn how to communicate with others and make friends. Runner is where the character starts exploring the world with all the knowledge necessary to survive. They discover how industrial and mechanized life truly is and how their people truly act. This is where they meet their adversary, who will ultimately drag them down to the antagonist's level and doom them. Runner 2 is where the character is thrust into a NEW situation unexpectedly, alone, no plan in mind, and unaware of how the new world works. They are out of place. They aren't welcome, and most likely will never be. They must find a way out of what seems to be a trap their adversary put them in, so they can return to their friends. This is where they should learn that they should never take what they have for granted, as it can always be ripped away in a heartbeat. They were lucky what was lost was replaced(temporarily) instead of losing everything and being left with nothing. We now transition into Fate. Fate is where our character gives off one last attempt of solving the problem by trying to befriend the antagonist. It fails, as his adversary is apparently the embodiment of hatred, and will not stop until they are rid of the character in their life. Instead of leaving the antagonist alone(or could be the opposite, depending on your view on the storyline), he keeps trying to solve the problem in which, to the character, everyone wins. This ultimately begins to tear apart the character, physically and mentally. The entry ends in one final showdown where it's the classic Protagonist versus Antagonist. The protagonist lets his anger get the best of him instead of controlling it. This leads the damaged Protagonist to unleash one final attack on the Antagonist, which ultimately ended in Kamikaze. Both died in the exchange. This takes us to Flux. This is where the protagonist completes a full circle. They begin letting go of everything that tied them to the physical world, their anger being a key component of that. Remember Beat? If you have played it and paid close attention, you remember how one of the stages shows apparent spirits fading off into space? This is where the protagonist ends up going. They keep going on, seeing everything from an outsider's perspective until they break the final barrier, where they return "home." What "home" is, we never know unless we get something that continues the story on from there. All we can say is that the protagonist has made it to where they were supposed to go in the end. Their story is complete. They have returned to something after they became nothing, as said in the video. They ascended to a new story to be told somewhere else in a new timeline, and where or when that very timeline takes place in is up to the viewer/player, at least, it's what I'd like to think. If it's the events of Super Mario, then it's Super Mario, or even, in what I like, if it's the events of Bullet Hell Monday, then it's Bullet Hell Monday. This is A story of how the cycle of life develops, matures and completes a character, and how that very cycle of life will always repeat again and again until the end of time. EDIT: Will see BTR3's storyline and will analyze it so I can incorporate it into this pre-existing analysis. Thank you for your time if you are reading this, and have a good day, afternoon or night.

    R2 and 3 aren't canon to the storyline, they're spinoffs.

    @@pixeldispatch_ I'd figure, but then again, it does say that R2 would happen within just a frame in the transition between Runner and Fate. So it can be considered canon by that reason alone.

    That's helpful and insightful, but does Runner2 fit into this at all? It definitely seems like a game that Gaijin was begrudging to make (And, ironically, the one I enjoyed the most out of all of them), so I'm not sure if it was meant to be symbolic at all, and yet I can't help but think that a series that went to such great lengths for all the rest of its series would hide some deeper meanings behind the colorful and playful exterior of its unplanned sequel. I believe it's been said that Runner2 takes place between RUNNER and FATE, which doesn't exactly hinder this rogue thought.
