While equine colic is a relatively common disorder of the digestive system, Dr. Pol discovers Jack the horse has other needs. Is there anything Dr. Pol can't solve?!

Nat Geo WILD Hello. Yesterday i saved a baby pigeon from some dogs. She was fine until yesterday. I gave her some water and some rice to eat . Today i took her to my rooftop where a lot of pigeons come and eat and set her there so she could fly away with her friends. But when she tried to walk she fell on her side wriggling and unable to walk . I tried to help her but she wobbled and fell again. I checked her legs and wings. Her wings had a few feathers missing . The same with her tail. Is it affecting her walking? Also i think she has caught bird flu...she keeps dozing off in a strange manner ..is there any med for bird flu? (Btws i live in india and so far i checked on net..theres no meds here for bird flu here...) ..pls ,if theres anything necessary i can do for the bird , tell me.

if you're wondering the outcome here's what the episode said: Jack was given some shots by Dr. Pol and the owner began giving him 2 pills a day prescribed by Dr. Pol, the next day Dr. Pol came back and Jack was sitting up. He was not standing and had not moved but at least was not laying down on the ground like the day before. He was very alert and was eating and drinking. Dr. Pol said that allowing him to rest and continuing treatment, he should be fine. this story can be found on episode 9 season 12.

I live in Amish country, we aren't amish at all but our neighbors are. We never push our animals. The amish do. Most of them around here anyways. Last week there was a filly way too young to have a buggy, she was rearing and flipping kicking trying to get away and the driver is a kid! The horse seized up, dropped to the pavement. It died. The kid started hitting it with a whip until someone stopped him.

Poor horse... But he's one in a million like that. There are ton of horses that get worked to death with no sense. Another great reason I hate Stalls. I can't count the number of times I hear or see horses locked up like that with no room to move enough, and then get worked out so bad for hours. Even if they don't just lay on the ground like that one; still hurts me knowing how they quietly suffer dumb humans

A stall is essential if you have a horse that needs standing bandages, stall rest, or if you have a herd that needs to go out in two groups, and protection from the elements. My animals are put in whenever it storms or we get the usual Pennsylvania weather. Stalls are a big part of the horse world, if built correctly, cleaned, and have proper air movement.

I had to put down my 36 yr old Morgan/Tennessee Walker because of colic. He’d try and trot away, then he would drop himself on his stomach and roll, then try and gallop away. Repeated that for 1/2 and hour or so. When the vet came out to give him the shot, it took 4x as much of the shot than it should have. The vet who came out told us that he (Blackie) was a fighter. He powered through 20 second pole runs, hour long practicing, the occasional cross-county, hours upon hours of roping, even more hours being a queen horse, and then having no physical ailments to show for it, other than scars from trying to jump a barbed wire fence when he was a colt, graying mane/tail/coat, and the small amount of teeth left. No such signs of arthritis, no eye issues, no anything! My next horse, preferably, to be a Morgan/Tennessee Walker

Sarah Redwood horse will be fine! He just has some muscle spasms. The pain killer and steroids that doc gave him would have kicked in in 15-20 minutes and the horse would get up. It’s very rare that a horse dies from Tying up syndrome.

metzd Has nothing to do with being overworked! The problem originated because the horse was stood in a stable over the weekend due to poor weather. And then was asked to pull the manure wagon. I personally have seen very lightly worked horses tie up. It’s usually traced back to a mineral deficiency. Electrolytes and making sure that the horse is fit for purpose will go a long way to reducing any reoccurrence.

Not all of them do. I use to live in an area where cars shared the roads with Amish buggies (sometimes the horses got mad because they were being passed by cars, they wanted to race them). There were some that were very lean (but not often unhealthy) and were tied out to wait in the cold at the stores. There were other horses that had some weight and were well groomed. They were the ones who always had a warm blanket on them when it was cold...they were also the ones who usually wanted to go as fast as the cars.🐎🚗

And if you had listened you would know that it was an accident. You can even hear them admitting to where they went wrong. And if they truly didn’t care about their animals than they would not have called the vet

Wrong. The horse has what is commonly called tying up, caused by exercise and a high carb duet like sweet feed and rich hay. It was seen often in race horses but in the past 10 yrs there has been great progress in offering feeds to help prevent this . it no longer is considered a Monday morning problem, but a muscle and nutritional issue. The muscle tissue actually breaks down so diagnosis is made by measuring the muscle enzymes in the blood. Cannot blame this on the Amish.

They run puppy mills, too. A friend was a vet in an area with a lot of Amish and has very little good to say about them. He saw a lot of cases of animal abuse and poor care.

Amish around here call it kidney shot. When my neighbors horse went down it tried but could not stand. We got him up by taking out the partition to the next stall and gave him more room to stand. It was all for nothing cause he west down again and passed. Previous to this he said he hadn't come out of his stall for two weeks. Hadn't needed him to go away. But there was no water in the stall. After this he put water ears in the stalls. The horse was a saddlebred. What's done is done but I chastised him for the lack of care.
