A crime this wasn't nominated for best picture. This movie is heartfelt, warm, and inspires you to be a better human. Something we should all celebrate. It's also a competent and imaginative well-done piece of cinema.

I just watched this movie last night. Mark describes it really well - especially as a Brit when you have no background to Mr Rogers. This guy was for real, and Tom Hanks does him justice. So refreshing to watch, this guy was a legend indeed, of kindness.

As a british child growing up in the 80s and 90s I used to see Mr Roger’s neighbourhood while visiting relatives on the east coast. What a breath of fresh air. In the UK it was all about silly fun with Timmy Mallet wack a day, Tiswas and number 73. Mr Roger was explained serious topics and emotions, without either pretence or patronisingly. So different to british kids television. I can’t think of anything that was similar.

My tear ducts were empty after this film. I was not prepared for how powerful it would be. It felt like such a kind, empathic film, almost a plea. I hear what Mark says about dramatic contrivance, but I just wish he had mentioned how good Matthew Rhys is. He makes it all very credible and essential to the film’s point of view. Just wonderful.

I know that the most acting is the thing that gets noticed all the time and its that just how things are. But, man, Tom Hanks is so subtle in the film, i don't think anyone could have pulled that off.

A minute silence in a cinema is something I've never quite experienced before and I found myself doing the same activity Matthew Rhys' character was performing. It was a lot more than just a film.

The film does something, that only a very small amount of movies really trying to do and accomplish: Have a conversation with the audience. The characters in the movie are only surrogates and their interaction is a representation of the interaction the viewer has while watching and listening to the dialogue. The genius of the film is, that it tries (and accomplishes) to recreate the effect of watching Mr. Rogers had for a kid for a mature audience, and using the story telling style for mature audiences to make this possible. This film is important, because it not only promotes empathy, but it lets the viewer experience the effect of empathy has on you. And it is very simple to do: All it takes is, to look someone in the eye, and ask: "What happened?" and then listen.

A mass shooting happened in a synagogue in the neighborhood near where Mr Rogers used to live in our city. Within a day many showed up in honor of the victims and in solidarity with the Jewish community against this white supremacist terrorism. I fondly remember marching past where he lived. Remembering the thing he said about watching for the helpers and thanking him for teaching me how to remember my humanity during trying moments like that. I cry thinking about it everytime

all from what i have heard from americans about fred rogers was that he was a national treasure and a tireless campaigner for educational learning, one person actually said to me that they and their kids grew up with him and learnt valueable life lessons and that they were glad to have him as their neighbor as were many other people.

I was just a little too old when Mr Rogers Neighbourhood began in 1962, but my children always watched Mr. Rogers when they visited their Canadian grandmother. From all accounts, what you saw was the real man and his beliefs. He really did care and children felt it. Will be interesting to see it with my now grown up British children and get their double perspective.

Funny you should mention Jimmy Stewart. There are some parallels between Jimmy and Fred. Both were born in western Pennsylvania, their hometowns just a few miles from one another. They were also Republicans and faithful Presbyterians. Physically, both tall and lanky. Just a few similarities I noticed. I was so impressed with the film's quietness which really encompasses who Fred was. Sadly, it hasn't gotten much attention due to the subtle nature of the film. I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Thanks for the review!

@@TheGingerpett The documentary first. It's on VOD already while A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood is only coming out within a few months on Blu Ray or streaming. Anyways, I recommend the documentary first because you'd really get to know Fred Rogers according to the people who knew him and learn what he was all about. For someone who's never really watched Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, this would be the best introduction compared to binging 800+ episodes. So documentary first, then movie. Hope this helps.

Really enjoyed this as its quite an emotive movie. It has a Michel Gondry quirkiness at some points but to me it doesn't feel "weird" at any point. The church feedback on the 7th tells you all you need to know. Doubt there will be a movie this year that packs the same emotional punch.

There was something a little Ned Flanders like about Tom Hanks' Mr Rogers in my view. One always felt there was something bubbling away under such a nice exterior. The more surreal aspects of the film made it come over as a cross between the innocent, feelgood energy of something like Mary Poppins combined with some effects that wouldn't seem so out of place in a Tim Burton movie. An altogether pleasant, yet odd experience.

I really wanted to like the movie but something just didn’t sit right with me. All the lines Fred Rogers has in the movie are merely a copy and paste job of all the classic quotes he has. I get that that was what he was like but I just don’t know if it get us enough. It felt like a TV movie a lot of the time for me which is a real shame because I was hyped to the high heavens to see this film.

It almost seems sociopathic to me that the story of Mr. Rogers requires some sort of artistic lens to depict. It’s all there in his actual show. The Real Fred Rogers’ show, as well as in his life/contributions which already exist in documentary form. I can hardly watch any of Mr Rogers’ Neighborhood without being reduced to tears and catharsis. Maybe that’s just me. Or maybe this movie isn’t really necessary. A genuine role model, champion of public broadcasting, and guardian of children, he may be too pure. God knows, rather than Mr. Non-Fictional Character Tom Hanks...we need the real thing now more than ever.

A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood, is the type of film that would've had James Stewart or Cary Grant in the Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys roles respectively, but playing a guardian angel or a man who's not coping with something in his life, instead we have a real life American children's presenter and a character loosely based on a real life journalist, standing in for the guardian angel and the man, who needs help. This isn't your typical autobiography film, it's more a Frank Capra type of movie from the 30s or the 40s, like It's A Wonderful Life and The Bishop's Wife. It's a moving and touching film about forgiveness and grieve.10/10 😀
