Your story reminds me, of me! I left Chiang Mai May 9, 2023. In California, and on May 11th, two days later, I get T-boned at an intersection. My car totaled, my ears ringing, and the worst part is the sound, “the horror.” Was merely in hospital for observation. Like you, it shook me up, in a very bad way. My anxiety and PTSD returned. I’m afraid to drive; some days I don’t leave the house. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to return to CM and will miss celebrating my birthday come August 11th. I hope to return as soon as this trauma and nightmares cease. Take care. 🙏🏼

Thanks for sharing Wayne. I know the feeling mate, after seeing friends killed in the Oil and Gas business, Aviation and people I did not know, like a group of old Korean ladies who cleaned up the site for bits of scrap metal, in a construction site, when an improperly rigged wall being lifted into place fell and crushed them flat. An American co-worker a rigger perceived what was going to happen but did not anticipate that the old ladies would rush out and be crushed. The next day when we expressed condolences and concern to the Korean Superintendent, he scoffed "Why you worry about those old ladies, they was gonna die pretty soon anyway". While on Holiday in Sanya China with a Chinese lady friend we hired a car to take us to town from our resort for dinner, and on the way back on an old may who had tried to cross a totally dark new expressway was struck by a car ahead of us and was lying in the middle of the road just over over a rise in the road. As we crested the hill unaware of the old man, he was suddenly illuminated by our headlights as he was struggling to to move out of the way. I can still see his bald head and look of terror as it appeared we would run over him. The young man driving us kept his wits and managed to dodge him by inches, loosing control but managed to recover, stopping just past the blind hill as I looked back at the old man struggling to get up. I opened the door saying "We have to move him NOW!" My girlfriend started to follow but the young driver speed off as had one foot out of the car. Saying in Chinese" IT'S TOO DANGEROUS!" As I looked back, a speeding Lorrie (Semi Truck) ran over old man, and if we had remained where we had stropped would have been hit as well. A bit down the road in a safe place to stop, our young driver pulled over, started shaking and began to cry about leaving the old man to his death. My lady friend comforted him saying: "You did the right thing, you saved our lives" Both those events (and others) haunt me even today Wayne, and mostly about the old man in China as I could have got out of the car letting it go and might have just been able to pull him to off the road. But in the moment, our driver did the right thing. I wonder Wayne, might be experiencing some guilt for not taking some effort to move the lady and the children out of harms way? If I had been in your situation, I might have but at such times we can't reasonably be expected to have perfect insight, but whenever possible, we should try protest others from harm, even if they might protest or it places us at some risk. Also, resenting such things or indulging in misplaced guilt over them is perhaps like indulging in a form of self harm, and perhaps best we learn from such misfortune and let it serve as a something to learn from that will better prepare us to prevent such misfortune going forward.

Hey Jack, thanks so much for sharing that mate, it sounded awful. Things can happen in the blink of an eye. These things do play on our minds mate, I couldn't stop thinking about it for ages. No time to really tell the woman to move, it was all so quick and the bike behind me was just a matter of seconds. I also had my helmet on. So that's not playing on my mind, staying longer with the the wounded kids was playing on my mind. Thanks buddy.

The fact you stopped and helped is more than enough a lot of people would have kept going your a good man and you did well no need to beat yourself up for not staying I'm sure they were all taken care of. Ive seen some awful accidents here I actually see one today while on my big bike there wasn't much left of both cars at a high speed junction. Take it easy mate💙

Mate, there were loads of Thai's there to help, and get medical assistance asap. With your limited Thai, and not being a Dr or Nurse, what could you have done to assist, above and beyond what was happening - I would guess not a lot. Please dont feel bad for not staying there. Your natural instinct to leave (because the situation was under control) was likely 100% - the old gut feel. Chin Up.

Sorry to hear about that mate. I think it helps to talk about it. If you're really worried, go back ask the owners of the restaurant. Find out if the kids are ok for you & them. Go visit them in hospital. Take some gifts. Will make them & you feel a lot better. It will ease your mind🙏

Thanks for sharing Wayne, its a terrible thing to be in or see an accident. It makes me realize how things can change so quickly, I live in San Sai and have learned in my year of being here to slow down and avoid morning and afternoon rush hour traffic. Stay safe my friend

Mate, I'm a qualified paediatric nurse from the UK, I worked at a children's charity in Pattaya for 21 years. Whenever there was an accident, unless it was a life threatening incident, I stood back, let the Thais manage it themselves. Everyone knew I was a nurse, but they had their own way of dealing with things. Don't ever feel bad or guilty about walking away, you did the right thing, you would have been in the way. The Thais may have been confused with you there, so you did the right thing by leaving them to get on with it. And I say that as someone who lived in Thailand for over 20 years and am a qualified nurse.

You're a such good hearted man , Wayne - take it gentle on yourself , mate - you did your best at the time so stop with the baseless self - recrimination . As the dust began to settle , you didn't want to be a hindrance , so you left - which was the right thing to do . It was a strange bizarre accident just waiting to happen with the 'mother' wandering dangerously in the middle of the road - and the accident just happened as you arrived so there was nothing at all you could do to protect the young children or the woman , god bless them , and your feelings of self blame or guilt are simply symptomatic of PTSD , which is natural . I would advise a retreat to a favourite temple to heal and find a calm perspective again . Be well , you're a good man .

I'm so sorry that happened and you had to see it. How awful for everyone involved. When I was a kid I saw another kid hit by a van, absolutely terrible and I still remember it vividly. Some things you never forget. Thank you for sharing your experience, I hope everyone recovers.

You’re a good guy, Wayne. Just know that you couldn’t find it in the news is a good thing. Kids can heal up remarkably well. Think they’ll be ok and you’ll feel better. I dropped off my sister a few weeks ago and an elderly neighbour of hers was mowing her lawn. Something didn’t seem right about her so I phoned my sister to walk by her house and just say hello to her.. see if she’s ok. My sister called me 10 minutes later. She found her lying in her bushes, you could barely see her. Think she had a mini stroke, couldn’t even get up. Ambulance came and she’s doing good now but I just wanted to tell you.. if you ever get a strange feeling, listen to it. I know I will from now on. It’s good you’re letting people know to be careful. Hopefully things improve some day with accidents.

Good of you to stop and go back, which I would have done as well, but sadly many would not. But you comforted and did what you could with no Thai language. No need to beat yourself up about not staying longer. The reality is unless you are a medic, the locals who could communicate with the injured people and who are used to such things were in the best position to help and there were many there to do just that. I rode a motorcycle all through high school and law school (when I had to sell my car to afford tuition) so as an experienced bike-rider, I can still remember my first time in Thailand, amazed how they broke every safety guideline we follow in the US, almost a demonstration of what NOT to do. Usually no helmet, wearing short pants, flip flops, 3 people on a bike, sometimes even 4, holding babies as they ride. Crazy to us westerners. But the mindset is contagious as I admit to doing some or all of those things from time to time when riding there.

The amount of people I see on the phone while riding also. I'm guilty of flip flops sometimes and not being properly protected. It's given me another wake up call.

I live in Mexico and Thailand. Lots of people tell me how dangerous Mexico is. 555. Ha I got hit by a car in Chiang Mai 8 years ago... While walking in a, soi! Mercedes driver never stopped. Minor injuries to me. She just kept driving... The Thai kid on a motorbike told me it was a woman texting and driving... I'm in a fkg wheelchair now because I slipped on wet marble steps in Chiang Mai. Broke my leg. Major surgery to both leg bones. Non of that sht ever happens to me in Mexico 😜😜👍🤔

Things like this happen. Alot of my friends have had fatal or bad accidents in Thailand. Alot of my friends in the States have had fatal or bad accidents. Just have to be extra careful when driving and do not take any risks or eyes off the road. Take care.

It's good that you stopped. Most people wouldn't even bother doing that. And thank goodness nobody was killed or seriously injured. As you pointed out, Thais are somewhat desensitized to it all as it happens so often. I think Thailand has the highest road fatalities in Asia. Your conscience is what's troubling you; we all have times in our lives when we feel we could've done more or 'better'. Don't let it eat away at you; hopefully you'll be feeling better in a few days!

It's an awful thing to see. Maybe you could do something now, after the fact, to help you move on. I don't know what it's like there, but here in Cambodia, there is a big shortage of blood in the hospitals, so giving blood helps a lot. Just an idea. 😊 I hope you feel better soon.

I worked in healthcare I used to feel the guilt you talk about. But I learned being there as a comfort for how ever long is a good thing and a comfort so you did well. Down on KohPhangan this morning a load Burmeases construction workers piled onto the back of a pickup which turned over killing at least 3 and few more critical. Life is so cheap here I often said to my wife why they put so many on the back of pickup she just says they need to go to work to feed their family. On a happier note I am in Chaing Rai at the moment and was down in your old stomping ground the old airport yesterday and found the best coffee shop in Thailand there...

Never mind what the kids were doing, what was the motorbike doing, that's a straight road there Wayne! How long before the ambulance turned up? If you're not first-aid trained then all you can do is comfort them, which you did. Don't think too much it, why not sign up for a first-aid course, I'm sure they do them in Chiang Mai .

A mother walking with her children down the middle of a busy road defies logic. Yet, we can not judge her, not knowing what was going through her mind. We have a lot of stressed out families not coping with the increasing cost of living. The minimum wage hardly covers daily expenses. We can only hope the people involved will eventually be okay.

It saddens me to see adult Thais riding mopeds with a little kid stood on the footplate and one sat on the back - all with no helmets on. The crazy thing is that most adult Thais have had a moped accident at some point, you can often see the scars on their legs, and yet they still put small children on bikes. I always wonder what the death and serious injury figures are in regard to small children on mopeds.

Sad to say it is normal there Wayne & in fact 50-60 dead on the roads EVERY DAY in Thailand! That is at the site...many more die after getting to hospital. Good on you for stopping but be careful with that too. Never touch an injured person but good you stopped & help even alert cars etc. Take Care & keep your head on a swivel my friend

Sharing this story is a good motivator for people who haven’t... go do a first aid course. Having someone around that knows what to do and what not to do when faced with such accidents can very well be the difference between life and death until the ambulance arrives. Totally agree that basic first aid is an essential, I would even say should be a mandatory part of a schools syllabus. Triage the four B ‘s was what I was told - Breathing, Bleeding; Breaks and Burns. However it is simply crazy in the modern age when the ‘Good Samaritan’ gets sued for saving a casualties life but had an allergy rash from the sticking plaster that the ‘Good Samaritan’ used , so people walk buy and do not do anything !

Things like that are supposed to bother us Walk-About Wayne. It bothers you because you have a conscience. That can make us do something about it, like encourage authorities to put signs up like, "DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY", etc. We need constant reminders; as you have just done, reminding us.

You can only do what you can do but you can learn from this maybe buy a good first aid kit with extra bandages and keep it in your bike do a first aid course (make a vlog about it) you could save someones life with simple things like stopping bleeding until an ambulance can attend but don't beat yourself up about this you stopped and tried to help so well done 😎👍

How horrible, Wayne. Seems like you're beating yourself up for not hanging around, but really what could you have done exactly? As you said, you don't speak the language, and there were locals there. Thank god it wasn't a car, and nobody got killed. About 1998, I visited Bali for the first time. I rented a motorbike to go to the top of the volcano near Kuta. The road going up was in really good condition, basically a new road, but it was only one lane going each way. The locals were massively speeding up the road, dodging all the motorbikes or whatnot going slower up the road (reminded me very much of the main road to Sihanouville from Phnom Penh). I was maybe more than halfway up to the top, and this guy in a sedan came flying by me in the middle of road. A little further up the road, he had stopped and pulled over. I saw a motorbike laying with two kids in the middle of the road who were not moving (they were dressed in what looked like traditional clothes). Of course, I pulled over like you did to see if I could help. Almost immediately, a whole bunch of villagers came out the side road (maybe where the kids had come from). They looked angry, and as a foreigner who didn't speak the language, I was afraid there would be some sort of misunderstanding, so I got on my bike and went back down the mountain to find professional help. I didn't find medical help, but I found a police station. I went in to report it, and the policeman was very nonchalant. I asked him if he was going to send an ambulance, and he told me not worry about it, the villagers will take care of it. Very upsetting, especially because the kids were probably deceased, or at the very least injured badly. But, I do think I made the correct decision. I'm just glad the kids that got hit behind you were conscious. Take care, man. You're a good guy.

Hey Stefan, thanks for the great comment. I can relate to what you said, I felt like I was making it worse staying, with the misunderstanding and communication problems, I didn't wan't to confuse the kids more either. I just wish I hung around for a little longer. Thanks mate.

It's terrible amount of accidents over there but it's part of life you get use too, I saw a accident @Chiang Mai gate when I was there, farang on a motorbike no helmet come off her bike she was in a bad way, but as always the Thais come to there aid a ambulance came in minutes

Well done for pulling over it say a lot about you as a person. Part of the problem living in Thailand is the lack of foot paths. If there is a foot path it’s taken up with tables and chairs and street food sellers. I don’t believe Asians see danger like we western people do. They put their trust in Buddha to look after them and sometimes Buddha is busy doing other things.

yes, it's not a good idea to watch, I try that too, I saw it when it happened, lucky show..we had 3 weeks of guys to set up a TV in each house, when one drove himself into a tree at night drunk , and died two days later, me and my wife both at the hospital to look after him, but he was already dead there. sad to see ..what I could help with was to tell the other two girls that if they could not drink only during the week and they should not drive somewhere, because then it will be them next time ..today they are moving from Chiang mai and home to our village they have both had two children ..It warms my heart that they have listened

@@WalkAboutWayne yes, that's 99% of all accidents, if you've noticed, the Thais drink more booze and beer every day, so it must go wrong ..and there are still far too many who drive without a helmet

Rule 1. Never ever get involved in domestic affairs as a foreigner in Thailand. Stay in your lane. 2. The mother was fine with no injuries. The injured kids was my focus. 3. being in the UK doesn't mean much, natural instincts are the same everywhere. Thanks 👍

You are a solid guy buddy, everyday life is more challenging and what is normal for some is not for others. In Pai the worst motorbike accidents are dumb farang tourists who have never ridden a bike before and wonder why concrete hurts when riding a bike in flip flops, cropped top and shorts (with no helpmate on) Mind you riding a scooter with your family of four, shopping and boxes is normal in Thailand, scary ! You don’t need a second pair of eyes but a whole bundle of eyes. Keep up with the good work.

Really sorry you went through this traumatic experience, it's one of those things that sticks with you for the worst reasons. I remember seeing an old man get hit by a car years ago and the sound of the crash and the image of him going flying kept going through my head. Good of you to stop and make sure they got some help, some people would just keep driving. Hoping the kids are all ok now. And I'm glad you are ok and weren't in a crash yourself.

I can't even watch this Wayne, because I think I know what you are going to say. I have to tell you that is my greatest fear in life. It is the biggest reason why I don't drive a motorbike (never will) and probably will never own another car. I cringe everytime I see a kid on a motobike. Absolute horror fear of mine.

Thank Dog for that . My first week here I saw a kid on a motorbike fly through the interescetion on Loi Kroh Rd.. Kid went flying over the car and landed in the road on his back crying in pain. At least he was conscious. He was o.k. but he scared the shit out of me.

It must have been really traumatic if the accident reminds you of the napalm girl from Vietnam, that's awful. I'm sure the locals took good care of the kids, there's not much you could do without speaking Thai. It's maddening that the woman and kids couldn't have the sense to know that a car or motorbike will always win in an accident with pedestrians.

That picture just kept coming into my head for some reason. It was nowhere near as bad though. I still can't understand why they was in the road. Thanks Becky.

@@WalkAboutWayne Some adults have zero common sense and unfortunately they then can't teach their kids common sense either. Sad.

I lived in CM 1994 to 1999 I got hit on my scooter from a scooter coming off a side street we both went down about 20 Thais surround me yelling at me the police show up take me station. So I was told even though it was not my fault it really is because I’m a foreign farang . So if I was not in their country it would never have happened.
