A&A 1914 Marathon Game

Ойындар

I sat down to play a solo game of 1914. My overall German strategy was the opposite of what they did in reality.
Three days later...
Enjoy!

    Hello AtomicFisher, glad you enjoyed it! Just to be clear, in the OOB rules, tanks are only supposed to grant the "damage absorption" while attacking, not defending. We changed it up so they always get that bonus. We found that people would leave their tanks off the front lines, just to counter-attack, and then no one would want to build them, especially when besieged. Bo-ring. We really like our way much better, and it encourages tank building on both sides. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Italy is weak, not a problem for the CP. The problem is UK building capabilities in India and US (and odd UK/France transports) able to reach Rome and Paris faster than Germany or Austria-Hungary can get there. Havinga small er economy and more moves to reach the targets (needing more time) is not a doable combo vs a sober Entente player.

    I have a write-up in the works for a better Central Powers strategy for this game than what I usually see floating around. In-short, the aim is to focus most of Germany/Austria's starting forces on defeating Italy ASAP, before USA enters the game in round 4. Once Italy goes down, Austria can focus it's attention on beating Russia/saving the Ottomans while Germany holds off the Americans/French and helps deal with Russia. Too often I see AH not give Italy the respect it deserves, leading to Italy remaining a thorn in AH's side for the entire game, putting undue strain on AH's economy and army. I don't have any more to say at the moment though. Nice to see 1914 content.

  • @TheHilltopPillbox

    I like that idea...maybe I'll try that next time! I think the reason many CP players fail is because they try to be strong everywhere, and it's just not possible. I like the idea of focus fire, and then try to hold against the other enemy. Seemed to work here, so the Italy thing may, too, although France will likely send stuff south to try to stop that, and a stronger Russia is always a pain! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    @@TheHilltopPillbox Kill Russia First is the other main Central Powers strategy. If Russia isn't careful, or tries to be too aggressive early (even after scouting that Germany/Austria are both aiming for Moscow), Russia will collapse quickly, making for a really tough game for the Entente. This is exactly what happened in your video, but in the end it seemed to be the tsunami of tanks from Germany + good dice that spelled doom for France.

    This was the first time that I saw the Central Powers actually win the game! Also, I agree with you about the tanks. the double hit can be used in many ways. Either to just block a hit here and there to keep the stack larger over a long time, sort-of adding to the durability of the stack, or if you have a bunch of tanks, you can use them to roll through and take no casualties at all when dealing with those pesky invasions behind the lines.

    Side-Note: Very rare to see a Central Powers victory in a showcase of this game, so that's interesting as well. Looking back over the video a second time, I think a key mistake here was that France/UK diverted too many of their resources to Africa and weren't aggressive enough in their respective theaters. As I said in my last comment, UK should be laser-focused on Ottomans to keep them perpetually on the defensive and France, upon realizing Germany/Austria's main focus was Russia, should have been more aggressive with Germany.

  • @TheHilltopPillbox

    @TheHilltopPillbox

    4 жыл бұрын

    No argument here, but I'm not sure how much more pressure France could have put on Germany...they almost got to Berlin! But I think the Ottoman comment is spot-on, and that's why I don't like the house-rule limit of 4 units in India. A limit makes it way too easy on the Ottomans.

    @@TheHilltopPillbox I might have to go back through the video again. It seemed to me that France stalled for a turn or two in Lorraine/Alsace before actually stepping up to hit Ruhr/Munich. Contesting those two territories ASAP is vital because it shuts down a huge amount of Germany's production (10 IPCs overall, ~1/3 of their starting value). Keeping Germany's income from spiraling out of control is the only way to prevent a disaster on the Western front.

    Yeah, it was fun, but certainly not a replacement for the Spring Offensive. Yeah, Italy is a weird nation in this game. I think a roll of 1-4 they go Entente, on a 5 they go CP, and on a 6 they just hold their territory and roll again next turn. Of course, if they go CP, France should get a nice force that just appears in Marseilles, or else Italy and AH would take Paris in three turns. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Yeah, I struggled with that, but thought I'd wait to capture Rome so I didn't have to even worry about mines. A couple hits can be very devastating, and I wanted a victory PLUS a good navy remaining after the fact. The five subs were bought with all that in mind, and it turned out okay, even losing three of them. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hi Hilltop Pillbox, thanks for the long video. I was wondering how you were using tanks in this game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like your tanks are blocking hits on the defense? I thought tanks only absorbed hits when they were on the attackers side, at least that's how I've been playing this game.

  • @TheHilltopPillbox

    @TheHilltopPillbox

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, with the OOB rules, you are correct - Tanks only absorb on the attack! This is just another case of me forgetting to mention an old house rule we instituted about 10 games. That made a lot of players just focus on using tanks instead of a variety of units, and then it became a game of manoeuvre. Players would hold back their tanks until the enemy attacked and got within range of their stack of tanks, and the game got boring. (And, the Entente won EVERY game!) We also know in the real war, some tanks that broke down ended up being little fortresses that absorbed a lot of damage protecting the retreating infantry. But, I should have mentioned it on the video. (Not the first time I've forgotten to do that!) Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Something that I seemingly see happen (and I might be wrong since I don't see it happen live) is that armies can take empty lands a bit too often. And I am not talking about Africa where this is impossible to not occur, or when a country is about to collapse and needs everything in its capital. I am talking about the amphibious invasions. It seems to happen a bit too much, that Kiel or Albania and sometimes Trieste in different games gets taken without much resistance because there wasn't much left behind (I can forgive losing it if 4 transports full are deployed). This to me looks like a major strategic flaw as it's a constant nuisance Am I correct or is this just my imagination?

  • @TheHilltopPillbox

    @TheHilltopPillbox

    2 жыл бұрын

    With the mines surrounding most of the important land zones, it is difficult to simply transport guys in, and with most powers trying to keep boots on the ground, taking enemy territory by sea can be an expensive proposition. Some might go for it, and I have seen the AH player build a couple of boats on Turn 1 to go and take out the Italian fleet, hoping to then land transports in later turns, but it is expensive to do. Albania is a freebie for Italy, but Kiel has mines and is close to Berlin, so a smart German player will put a few artillery there to get the free shots at any troops landing. So, it is very difficult to land in Kiel, unless France has been secured and GB has the Ottomans subdued. Overall, amphibious assaults are not the norm in the game, so if you're seeing it more often, I guess your group just enjoys it more! (Keep that artillery in those zones and soften up the landing force!)

    Yes, you are correct. We try a house rule every so often that gives tanks the defensive absorption, too. you should have bought another cruiser or a couple of subs for Austria, or attacked after sacrificing the Ottoman cruisers. Otherwise that battleship was a waste of money. Also a purchase of 2 cruisers and 3 subs for Germany next to Prussia would have blocked a naval invasion and also give the punch to destroy the British battleship and then any surviving naval units could destroy the American line of troops in the Atlantic.

  • @TheHilltopPillbox

    @TheHilltopPillbox

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, a lot of debate went on as to how to approach naval action in this game. I did know that if I spent a lot of money on German naval power, then France would be able build an unbeatable force on land, while Britain could match whatever the Germans built, thereby making the German build useless. For Germany to get out into the Atlantic, they have to survive some minefields, and the British fleet. Meanwhile, France is building land units... No easy answers, of course, but it was fun to try to figure out how to deliver a knock-out punch without being able to evade it. Playing against yourself is a difficult task...
