A 6-string bass for only $69? Checking out a Ktaxon (unbranded Glarry?) 6-string bass

Музыка

Amazon made me an offer I couldn't refuse. For about $100 including shipping, I got my hands on a Ktaxon/Glarry 6-string bass. It may bear more than a passing resemblance to a $3000 Warwick, but is it any good? Let's find out.

Great review Scott. I picked up a 'Quincy' six string bass around 5/6 years ago for £230 new. Well, I won the lottery that day. What a fantastic instrument! Many have thought it to have a 2K+ price tag - because that's how good it looks, feels, plays & sounds.

Scratch some of the chrome finish off under the bridge make sure the ground wire hits there.

I guess that would also be a way to see if it’s not metal. Whatever it is, is not magnetic for sure though.

@@room34 If it isn't metal, you could put a piece of conductive tape on the bottom of the bridge to give it something to ground to.

@@Hey-Its-Dingo Tape would do nothing, & scratching the plating may or may not work (but in this case I kinda doubt it). The whole point of grounding the bridge is making a complete circuit w/ the strings. Maybe try wrapping a wire around the saddle screws & extending the bridge ground out & to there? Personally I'd prob'ly take a chunk of the $2900-ish I saved & just buy a new bridge (if I decided to actually use the bass). The beautiful thing about all of this is that you got a cheap test bed out of the deal to try/ learn things that you might be wary of doing to a more valuable instrument. Try things w/ the bridge, file the fret ends, carve yr initials in the headstock... go to town on it :D

@@room34 Stainless steel is not magnetic, it is difficult to drill, cut. Bleach will put extremely tiny holes in it, weird. Nickel is not magnetic. Titanium is magnetic. I'm not sure, but I don't think you can solder to stainless steel or aluminum, which also is not magnetic. There may have been some reason for using non magnetic material close to a pickup, or maybe they could get stainless and not usually less expensive and easier to work material.

This is a nice thorough review of the ktaxon 6-string bass. I’ve been seeing reviews on these bass and for a super affordable bass, they sound really incredible.

To answer a couple of the common questions I forgot to address in my voiceover: 1) The bass is very light! I'm not sure what the body wood is, but it's unbelievably light. 2) Yes, that means there is MASSIVE neck dive. I mean, with a neck that thick, how could there NOT be?

  • @maurocaputi2700

May I ask you to quantify what "unbelieveably light" means? Perhaps you weight yourself, then weigh yourself holding the bass, and find the difference? I'd be very interested in the result. I have two Glarry 4 string GP basses with basswood bodies that weighed in at 5 lbs 12 oz. Thank so much!

Buzzing of the bridge: Is the bridge conductive? Try running a new lead from the bridge to the ground (either new wire or old school a cooper strip from the bridge to the bridge pickup copper shielding you placed. That should take care of it.

If that bridge is plastic it won't get super cold or hot with ambient temperature changes. Take it off and put it in the fridge or freezer for an hour, if it's any kind of metal it'll get and stay cold. Plastic wouldn't get so cold and would warm back up very quickly.

There’s a demo jam at the end with three layers of the bass playing, but I do see value in having isolated takes of the individual tones. I’ll work on that.

I didn’t add any kind of grounding wire that wasn’t already there, but I made sure it overlapped the holes for the screws and the pots… not sure if that’s enough.

Voice is fine, guitar near inaudible as last 4 of 5 videos of Glarry GIB 6 string guitar. The audible guitar video was an actuve guitar. I have not seen an audible version of the passive Glarry GIB yet. For the buzz,, this tidbit is from Glarry 40W amp description and probably all of their amps: NOTE: the sound of electric current passing through is inevitable. It is recommended to turn on the amp first and then the distortion button (Drive button). In this way, the noise can be greatly reduced.

I hope I'm as lucky as you were when I get my 4 string Ktaxon that I bought for $59.99 plus $19.99 shipping and sales tax. Tomorrow? Since I couldn't find anybody posting a review on it I think I'll give it a go. It'll be the first bass I actually own so I can't call myself a bass player but I'll give it a shot.
