    I went to an airshow 20 years ago and asked the A-10 pilot " Is it true that these are the only aircraft in the inventory that take bird hits from the rear?" A joke at the time ,because of their slow air speed compaired to the others. He sad "NO" and seemed very annoyed.

    I heard fighter jet jockeys joke that A-10 pilots use calendars instead of watches because they fly so slow. But when a jet jockey is shot down and waiting for rescue, and the enemy is racing to capture them, I bet their tune changes with the A-10's arrive to provide ground support.

    Two F-16 pilots are walking away from their respective planes bragging loudly (so the nearby A-10 pilot can hear) about all the ordinance their jets can carry. The two F-16 pilots then look to the A-10 pilot and with all the smug in the world, they ask the A-10 pilot what does his plane carry. He responds with: "F-16's."

    @@TheCoolCucumber They're not necessarily deeper toned, they sound similar to the F404s in the CF-18. They just get quieter from a much shorter distance in comparison. It had to get about a kilometer to the airport before you could start to hear the A-10 again, while the CF-18s could be heard for many kilometers. The APU the A-10 uses to start up its engines though IS very deep in tone, and shakes the ground rather violently unlike the main engines. Even with one engine is already started up, you can immediately tell when the APU kicks in again to start the second engine.

    sorry dude - The A-10 isn't survivable on a modern battlefield (attempting to armor an aircraft is a fools game). Their current use is because they are a decent bomb truck with relatively long loiter time, but they have inferior optics and electronics to a drone, which also has a much greater loiter time (although they can't operate in a contested airspace), and greatly inferior payloads and loiter time compared to a B-1, which can actually operate in a contested airspace. Also the gun is bloody useless. To further support this idea, I'd like to point out that the US pulled their A-10s off of attacking the Iraqi Republican Guard, in the first gulf war simply because they were losing too many.

  • @bullpupgaming708

    @bullpupgaming708

    Жыл бұрын

    @@fluffy1931 someone doesn't understand current air battle plans and it shows. We aren't sending A-10's in contested airspace by themselves like you see in War Thunder or Ace Combat. Against manpads and earlier Soviet era AA they are fine, and the new and scary AD systems would be neutralized by the time A-10's would arrive in an AO. The purpose of the A-10 is perform mission set (CAS, CSAR, SCAR, Anti-Maritime, FAC, etc) at a more cost efficient manner than sending up sorties of F-35's, F-15E and EX's etc with more advanced guided/smart munitions (which, let's forget those smart bombs cost millions of dollars themselves, see how the money signs start adding up?). And trust me, 2014 proved why it's a bad idea to have a B-1 preform CAS when one schwacked an entire SOF team in Afghanistan by simply dropping its bombs to close to them (something people tend for forget about smart bombs, they're still bombs with blast radiuses in excess of a few hundred meters). Also, B-1s maintenance wise have one of the worst Mission Capable rates so good luck getting those things in the air in any decent number both aircraft wise and sortie number wise.

    so, you are biased towards the aircraft you are supposedly a crew chief on. Got it. The A10 is overrated and the ONLY reason it is used in the low intensity warfare the US has been involved with for the past few decades is because it is cheaper to operate. Any other aircraft can do just as good if not better. The LAST "real" war, though that is debatable as we were kicking a Third World country with outdated equipment, the A10 wasn't the top performer. More ground targets were destroyed by the F111 in Desert Storm and they lost LESS aircraft. The F111 has had FOURTEEN combat losses in its ENTIRE history and that include VIETNAM.

    One thing about the positioning of the Aircraft's Engines. When a jet engine gets hit - it can sometimes come apart, slinging fan blades about. By putting the Engines off in their own little pods - this reduces the negative impact of the engine coming apart or catching fire on the rest of the aircraft, unlike engines which are inside the aircraft's fuselage. Another aspect of the A-10's history - is that while - yes - the aircraft is beloved by many for saving their asses - including it's air crew - the Air Force itself hates it and has tried to get rid of it several times. The Air Force has always preferred an image of a Service that goes after Strategic Targets to Win Wars - and doesn't really get into the grubby existence of people on or near the ground. It really should be owned by the Army - who would appreciate it - BUT - in the Forming of the _"Air Force"_ it took all the Fixed Wing aircraft away from the Army - so that the Army is only allowed to have Helicopters. .

    The problem is the US Military does not have a good replacement for the A-10's long-loiter CAS capability, and the US Air Force has shown little interest in procuring one. The alternatives all have issues: 1) Drones -- While having loitering and payload capability, the ones being proposed have poor performance and must maintain high-altitude. The key issue is they are all remotely controlled from vast distances, which means any number of electronic countermeasures can be used against them. 2) Heavy Bombers -- Has loitering and payload capability, but likewise have poor overall performance, must maintain high altitude, and are rather easily detected and countered when loitering. The USAF also has shown little interest in procuring a low-cost aircraft, and has been letting the current fleet of B-52s and B1B's atrophy. 3) Highspeed Fighter-Bombers/Multirole Aircraft -- High performance and modern electronics, but have poor loitering capability. They are also much more expensive, require a lot of maintenance and support, and are designed for high-speed and high altitude, which (while making them great for strike missions) makes them poor for cases where they need to stay on-station and CAS needs to be performed at lower altitudes and visual confirmation. I can understand the USAF not wanting to upgrade the remaining A-10 airframes with better or modern electronics, but at least propose a project to replace the high loiter time, low altitude, high payload capability with the ability to perform visual attacks. Not just say "my latest toy can do the job -- give me more money for that please"

    indeed the gun was made to destroy russian tanks, but what a 10 fans never mention is that it failed to do that role... the live fire test showed it to be ineffective to useless at taking out the russian tanks of that era, which is why the a10 carries around an oversized gun which is too slow firing to be effective against troops

Not to mention the deployment of new SPAA in Soviet tank formation at the time render that point moot since their cannons ourange 30mm not to mention the missile on it. The primary anti tank weapon of A-10 has been missiles for a long long time.
