9mm 147 Grain Law Enforcement Ammunition Battle : Speer Gold Dot VS Winchester Ranger

Спорт

Testing out some 9mm 147 gr ammo in a 10% Clear Ballistics test (ballistic gel). I use my Taurus G2C 3.2" barrel and S&W M&P 2.0 5" barrel for guns and the ammo is Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP rated at 985 FPS, the Winchester Ranger is also 147 gr but it is a +P rated at 1,030 FPS. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

Do you guys like 9mm testing? For years I been trying to always have a revolver in every test, I have done very few 'semiauto only' tests until recently with the .357 Sig VS 9mm testing. Frankly I been having trouble finding proper revolver ammo, so if you guys like these type of tests I will continue to do them.

One of my Patreon members did point out that I gel tested the Winchester T Series 147 gr, which didn't perform all that well. I also wanted to point out that I do wear earplugs in addition to earmuffs when the earmuffs don't directly contact my ears. You wouldn't think i'd have to mention that, but you would be surprised at the number of officer Trolls who will 'patrol' my videos and make sure I know how dangerous I am for not doing what I am actually doing.

30 years ago it was considered almost insane to carry 147's in a pistol shorter than 5". I think Speer changed all that in the early 00's when they came out with their 147 grain. Nowadays almost all the ammo makers are coming out with decent 147's, thanks to Speer's innovations.

Good test. My duty gun was a Glock 23, which of course is a.40 cal. We used the Winchester Ranger, but I preferred the Speer. I always felt like the ballistics were more consistent, and I never saw Speer ammo fail to expand. Good video. My agency in SoCal used to issue the 147gr Winchester (non+p). It performed about the same as in the video, specifically a lack of consistent expansion when passing through thick clothing. Then they went to the Federal 147 HST and got such better performance in actual street results. Both rounds are still authorized because they order pallets of ammo by the literal train box car load for the year and there was at one time so much of the Ranger ammo on hand. But I’ve switched over to the HST for all of my 9mm’s. I love that round.

What would be interesting next is to see how well the regular 147 grain Gold Dot compares to the 147 grain G2. I am still good with 124 grain +P God Dot and HST, but good to know that if I stumble upon a good deal on 147 grain Gold Dot, it won’t be just for plinking.

Gold Dots were one of the first bullets designed to be barrier blind (expand on target without under- or over-penetrating AFTER passing through cloth, glass, wall board, sheet metal, etc.) and they are still one of the best on the market. As for bullets going from super- to subsonic destabilizing...it's doesn't automatically happen, and depends on the bullet. Some of the old black powder "buffalo" cartridges were accurate out past a mile despite going transonic within a few hundred yards from the muzzle.

However I took three shots at a deer that surprised me and didn’t have time to get rifle. 50-60yd shot which I shoot to 100 with handguns during training. I shot once in the middle then top of back then belly and finally I picked up rifle and dropped it. That was the day I decided to either go with gold dot or federal hst. Ultimately if I was going to do it, I would do it with hand loads and I would use flat nose SWC bullets like .38 Special 158 gr because I could easily drill them consistently. I wouldn't do it with FMJ ammo because it's often too rounded and it would be difficult.

No one should argue with you from 75 yards, that's for sure! It's also cool to see the bullet fragments kick up the leaves after they hit the steel. That's some nasty shrapnel. I did kind of expect you to swap the blocks for the second string of tests. I started getting lost with all those tracks. The Winchester seemed to be doing more damage, but not so much more that I think it would make *the* difference. It would come down to price as to which one I would buy.

Oh, and on the second string, honestly I had miscalculated. For some reason I was thinking 4 shots, two in plain gel two in 'real world', but after I got out there and had just one clear block with me (other backup one nasty cloudy) I then realized, wait I have to do 8 shots because two ammos and two guns. Normally it's two guns and one ammo not two guns two ammos each.

@@Fudmottin When I first started using clear ballistics, I more or less ruined my first few blocks. If the process is done correctly and no water gets in it, and all the debris is cleaned out properly, it's just as good as new even 15 melts later, feels and reacts the same, just less clear. It is in theory unlimited remelts.

Hey sam I was wondering if I could email you directly about an idea I have about a slight modification that I have made to some regular 115gr FMJ 9mm ammo that might cause it to tumble on impact which would cause a lot of damage, I just don't have the ability to test it out like you do, I could send you pics and probably even a video of how easy the modification is and could even maybe send you some modified ammo for testing and evaluation..........?

My former agency issues Federal HST 147 grain 9MM for duty. All retirees who qualify for LEOSA certification get a new box of “duty” ammo every year. Surprising & very generous IMHO. Their duty weapon is the Gen. 4 Glock 19.

Many agencies are using 147 grain ammunition from Federal, Winchester, Speer, Remington and Hornady. Back in the early 90’s. Those older bullets known as Subsonic had a terrible reputation for failure to stop. The 115 +P+ loads from Federal and Winchester had a great one shot stop with actual Law Enforcement shootings. After the 1986 FBI debacle. It was recommended that all 9mm ammunition be 147 grain to penetrate. An LA Deputy shot a bad guy and the bullet passed through the glass killing an innocent bystander.

I get that comment constantly as well- "people don't wear 4 layers of denim." I usually respond with something to the effect of what you just did in the video. People that don't live in the north just don't get it- crime doesn't stop just because there is snow on the ground lol. We wear a lot of layers up here, especially if we're outside in the crap- and the layers are thicker than 4 puny layers of denim. And I don't know about you, but I can't afford to put holes in $300 worth of clothing every video to be "realistic" in testing for these scenarios and climates. That's why 4 layers of denim is used, and people also fail to grasp the concept that it is also meant to somewhat represent the effects of thick animal hide clogging up hollow points as well (think bear and moose attacks). They just hate it when they see their favorite carry round fail through the denim. In videos where the round is excellent and laughs at the denim on the way through, there are never such comments about how the denim wasn't fair or wasn't "realistic." You already know Sam- but yeah, I get the same crap on my channel as well.

"YOU SHOULD HAVE......." lol, then they say something that would suggest they are in a fantasy world and you will be like, (what is this guy talking about??). I believe it was the IWBA that started the denim thing, and the FBI then may have used it but they are more into the drywall/windshield testing. I think the regular 4 layer denim test was thought out well for a reason, and I love seeing my ammo excel through it. I can't understand the people's obsession with caliber and competition, they don't understand "comparison" lol. But you know, I spent like $660 on the longest possible 9mm barrel capable of easily handling +P+ just to trash the 9mm! haha
