So good Jeff! Appreciation for sharing the journey of the IMS bearing (& all Your vids!) which has been a sensitive issue with the 996 & early 997s. Just a heads up for anyone interested that PCA ( Porsche Club of America on You Tube) has a wonderful series on dealing with the IMS Bearing that is extremely helpful for educating & method. Thank You for Your inspiration Jeff!

Well done, nice to see work done warts and all, real world problems that most of us come across. I just replaced my Boxster engine mount, it was split. Looks like your gearbox mount is the original one I’d take a close look at it next time you drop the gearbox, easy enough to push a new one in. Well done!

Even though it's round about 200 years old it's still recent enough to have plenty of potential electronic gremlins in there. The more sophisticated it gets, the more sensitive and complex it gets. Well done on getting it back on the road quickly. I know how stressful it is to have a daily car apart. As much as I don't mind doing more complex things on my Trans Am, I was stressed about getting a complete new set of brakes on our Astra, plus a full service in one day. Just needs to be ready and available by the end of the day...

I was a Porsche tech @ a Porsche/Audi dealership for over 20 years and whenever we did clutches on 911s with a dual mass flywheel in the early days of their use we would usually replace them with a pre dual mass 911 flywheel unless it was a warranty job or a demo (track day car) as most customers weren't into springing for a $1,200 flywheel. Dunno if that would work with a 996 as I got out of the trade before they cam out.

Have the trans in a gear. Then you can turn the drive outputs to turn the input shaft to the connection spline in the clutch.

Too late now, but I wouldn't have tried to pull the IMS without the proper tool. I did 3 of these early M96 engines at home, and had all the same nerve-wracking moments as you, but all went well when they fired up again. I bought the tools and bearings from LN Eng, not cheap.

My wife hates when I set out to fix something and I break something (in your case it didn't idle), my case is usually a broken hose or clip etc. Thankfully you got it going in the end!

Dude... If you're NOT breaking something while you're trying to FIX something..You're doing it Wrong!! 😜 Who hasn't told the wife "Oh It'll only take a few hours"... days later the car is still in the garage while you're waiting for parts!!

I serviced my cars on the weekend. Forgot to reconnect the MAF on one. Wouldn't idle. Freaked out. Plugged it in. Idled fine. Engine light still on. Got my scanner. Started it to get engine data. Engine light went out by itself. Relief.

I own several exotic-ish cars, but my daily driver is a camry. It makes life a lot easier....and less stressful when it's time to do repairs

Much more fun in a narrow garage on axle stands lol. May I suggest a clean of the throttle body based on your initial idle problems.

Jeff. When you get in there next time for the IMS bearing, replace also the clutch fork. They have tendency to break .

Funny. I watched your last video on the IMS and then my feed this morning had a video from Wheeler Dealers where Ant was replacing it with an oiled bush kit. Apparently not inexpensive to do.

Turn the ignition on a few times before starting to build up fuel pressure

Nice job Jeff wait for another month or so before you tackle the ims bearing

If it's anything like my old BMW, they give you the option to drive the replacement seal a few millimeters farther to give the new seal a clean surface in case the original seal has worn a grove in the in crank.

I bet you had a great sense of relief when you got the car to run correctly. When pulling seals out, I usually try to drive a woodscrew into the seal in two places, hasn't failed yet, and it creates less metal filings too.

Hey Jeff, love your work, have you considered the IMS bush with oil feed mod?

Jeff, I think there is a snap ring or circle clip that you must remove before you can pull the IMS bearing. Did you remove it?

If the pedal is biting high try bleeding the clutch hydraulics before attempting any adjustment.

He never opened the system, so he didn't introduce any air into it that would require bleeding out.

I think you're right. Assuming it's a fly by wire E throttle (post MY 2000?), turn ignition on for 30 seconds or so without starting car or touching throttle. Voila

Or get the Borescope and look at the I inside of the IMB and fabricate a tool to fit on the puller

Was there a part 2 to this that got deleted that I can't find?

Is the Rear main seal holding up and not leaking using the rear main seal tool that you made? I've heard people try these diy tools and the seals still leak. Thanks.

It isn't leaking, but the IMS cover plate is :(

Have you checked out the PCA HQ youtube channel? They have videos on IMS bearing replacement. Just a thought.

What happens with the bolt that was knocked through the IMS bearing (or am I just imagining that)?

New subscriber! I am catching up on all your content, great fun. I am going to be doing my own 996 IMS change and will definitely get the LN, but am leaning to the direct feed version. Thoughts?

If you can't start the car without sweating that the IMS might blow up any second, then the direct feed one is for you. I think the IMS is over hyped. I pulled the original bearing out of this and my Boxster both with over 150k kms and they were both still perfect.

@@HomeBuiltByJeff Thanks, I have now seen a couple other people use the LN sealed unit as you did. The installation looks so much easier, it looks like a better option for me to do in my garage. Great channel. I am working my way through your incredible content.

If I am not mistaken the mark on the flywheel bolts is 60deg turn not 120deg? Bolts need to turn to another 60 deg. Might be mistaken though. 🤔

90 is a quarter turn, so yes this is 120 ;)

Ok, if you're not going to use the right puller, go ahead and use that three jaw internal puller you had, but do this. Remove the three fingers from the jaw to threaded rod attachment. Put a piece of pipe, or a socket in between the jaws with the jaws inserted in the bearing. This will keep the puller from slipping and collapsing inward. Reassemble the fingers to the attachment. Pull bearing out. No new/proper tool needed. Simple.

Where did you grab that plastic fitting? Can't see anything like it at Bunnings.

From memory it is a PVC plumbing cap.

@@HomeBuiltByJeff I tried following your lead but couldn't get the RMS in straight. In the end I got a PVC screw cap and carefully sanded it down to 13mm. I could then just whack it in firm with a rubber mallet. It's straight!

Does it drive better with the new flywheel?

@@HomeBuiltByJeff That's because you're a good smooth driver. In town and in traffic you would have noticed it being a bit jerky.. I had that on my previous Cayman S. Also I believe the clutch is self adjusting which is great as the pedal stays the same throughout it's life. What's not so great is there is no real warning of impending doom when it's fails. Not a concern for you now though. :-)

Home Built By Jeff Good to know, if I have to replace my flywheel in my BMW I’ll change it for a cheaper rigid one.

IMS BEARING REMOVAL Jeff as you have good access it might be prudent to "break the bearinb" there are plenty of ways to bust a bearing but as you have to be gentle you can get the deamel/small air cut of disc and cut the ID of the bearing and remove it with the balls. Then you can do the same thing to the outer race.

Ok in theory, but that would end up with metal filings all through the bottom of the engine and cause more problems than the IMS.

Mate get the bearing done asap, are you buying the IMS delete/conversion kit !!!! As a mechanic I'd wouldn't get a OEM bearing too reinstall. It's pointless the car will have the same issue

That flywheel bolt set is going to be a bit of a pain in the wallet when you take it apart again. I had a van that someone the other end of the country did the head gasket on they ground the bottom off the stretch bolts saying they will be fine to the previous owner, well it failed on me, to take it back to them on a trailer would have cost me more than re-doing the job new gasket kit new bolts job done worked great for 3 years. £60 for the bolts Ouch. Strange seeing you putting things back without a thorough clean and a coat of paint.

Every vehicle I've worked on with a dual mass flywheel has had a single mass conversion done. Dual is the worst design ever. On a side note, a $10 degree wheel from Supercheap is way easier than marking the bolts. *edit Sorry it's $19

Right?! How many of us have set out to complete a project only to find that it's much more difficult then we can manage or we are missing the appropriate tool. That's what I love about working on cars. It's very rewarding when you get the job done!
