I had a S600 of this generation from near new as well. In the 6yrs I had it the only expensive item that went was the ABC pump and covered by warranty. Cosmetically it was perfect…the older W220s, as MegaSpec is did tend to suffer more with issues. My father bought an S500 when it came out and after 4yrs had issues even the dealer weren’t sure they could fix (problem with battery draining)

That didnt include labourcost, but i spent a lot on specialtools hahaha, i would say i spent around 700Euros now instead of around 5k, because labourcost and original parts are mental, if you cut those two out you will save yourself a lot. But you need Time and good research.

Sell the one good headlight and ya got ya money back 😂 Maybe that should be the next part to the vid, can you break the car and buy an even mega spec'ier car with the profits 👌 (Edit, to all the people commenting on my comment, I appreciate your passion but remember it is more a joke comment and doesn't warrant multiple replys saying you can get it cheaper on eBay 😂)

Under a grand for that level of spec and a full (if slightly suspect IMO) MoT, you really can't go wrong... If the insurance was more sensible (£750/year!) I'd be tempted to offer a swap for my Volvo S80 D5 SE Lux. Tempted, but not hugely lol, that thing has just turned 200k and drives like it's done under half that & i love the thing!

You can get them used for a small fraction of the cost of you can find someone who is parting one out. However given the state of the body it's parts car material.

Nice guy but his prices were utterly absurd. Not the work but the shop that's the most expensive ever. Probably charge a grand for an oil change. A thousand pounds for a headlight. He's lucky he didn't get a blow to the head for even saying it.

I bought a lot of new parts from a local independent shop and replaced them myself. The headlights can be fixed for less. But if you don't want to keep it, you can part it out for a lot more than you paid for it..

Yes, some scamming MOT garage in Coventry wanted £400+ VAT & fitting to swap out the wobbly headlamp on my E39. I fixed it for £8 with a replacement height adjuster kit off E-Bay and then found a video on KZread to fit it. The same scamming garage then quoted me £2k+ to fix a misfire on it when under more than half throttle. Got it fixed elsewhere for £350; it just needed new cam sensors, not new timing chain etc.

But that wouldn't be it in perfect working condition. Far from it. Add the grand this POS cost and you're talking about £12K, which is more than enough to get a better, more modern car in good condition. A cursory check of Autotrader gives loads of much newer S-Class options (including S500s) at that price range. However, what I would add is that you could do a lot of this much cheaper by getting used parts rather than new.

  • @alexanderSydneyOz

Most interesting, though probably not too surprising! I am guessing that could be lowered vastly IF you can a/ do the work yourself and b/ workaround things like the absurd 1k for the headlights. I would think there is an aftermarket option for those. And c/ if you deduct the 'worst case' possible but not necessarily, repairs. All that said, I am sure repairs to luxury brands can, and do, spiral out of control.
