$98 Walmart Bike - Decathlon Rockrider ST100 First Impressions Review - Is it Any Good?

Quick on the heals of my last video, I put together a rough edit and voiceover to discuss this impossibly inexpensive bike. Is it any good? To my surprise, it seems like one of those rare scores, made all the more incredible by it being from a big box retailer.

    In the 90's my first mountain bike was a Decathlon Rockrider. That was the first year that the Rockrider brand was launched with a focus on affordability, quality and value. They would offer free tune-up at the store. You could show up one month after purchase and they would tune the bike for you. They still do this in stores in Europe to this day. And as a 13 yrs old kid: having a tuned-up bike and get the feeling that all feels right and just flies is priceless. I have found memories of all the streets, roads and trails that I have been on with this bike. So yes, as an adult, i could not say no to getting a $199 Rockrider ST100 for $98!! It got delivered today, sized to my hight ... and that frame looks sharp. Thank you for the heads-up. A deal like that is rare enough.

    I wanted the black one, but the red one at $98 with free shipping was a steal! Great bike to ride around town.

    Great set of videos! I grabbed one for $84 for basically the same reason. It’s a bit tall for me at 5’11”, but for the price I can’t complain. As a nice benefit, it reignited my love for the being on two wheels, and now I have nowhere to go but up 😂 I’m only going to throw a slightly better pair of pedals on it, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you upgrade on yours even if it’s minor!

    the derailleur is actually made by Microshift. It is their cheapest model, but it works good. It is an equivalent for Shimano Tourney. For the price, it is decent

    Truth is, it's targeted to be a $200~250 dollar bike. They are produced in high volume with a focus on quality and the brand has a following in Europe. It's a known brand positioned on delivering high value at each price point. At $100 you got yourself a clearance deal. The Decathlon product managers have been riding the products in the French Alps for over 30 years, slowly refining the bikes over the years. If you shop at the $500 to $800 price point you get amazing value.

    I know so little about the brand, but it looked good enough for me to try one out for $100 just to see how good or bad it would be. I have bikes ranging in cost from $800 to $6000, so my point of view is that of a premium bike buyer. That said, I rode big box store bikes as a kid (Huffy, Murray, Sears Free Spirit) and I remember how bad some of those bikes were. This Decathlon is definitely a few steps above the disposable, low quality brands. I would love to find a similar clearance deal on a bike that is in that $500-800 retail price range to see how those perform.

    Since you are knowledgeable about bikes and parts. Could you do a video about what upgrades you would choose by order of best return on investment. Let's say we have a $50 upgrade budget ... Which parts would you update first and with which product. (Give reference in description). That would be helpful for all of us that have gotten this bike

    I bought the same bike. I find the front suspension a little squishy. Have you sorted out how to adjust it? (Sales copy says you turn a dial, but i'm not sure that actually exists on the walmart model)

  • @aaronbehindbars

    @aaronbehindbars

    This fork is non-adjustable. I think these were originally spec'd with an SR Suntour brand fork and it may have been equipped with a preload adjuster The Walmart units have a Zoom brand fork. I'm pretty happy with the spring rate on mine and I'm a heavy rider at 235 lbs. I'm doubtful of this, but it is possible that the fork spring rates are frame size specific where the XL frame would have heavier fork springs as the expected rider would be heavier. Many bike manufacturers do this, so maybe Decathlon has done so, too.

  • @aaronbehindbars

    @aaronbehindbars

    Жыл бұрын

    That is the best possible option you could have chosen. You are within the stated height range for that size. Try it out and see if it is comfortable. The handlebar stem can be easily swapped for longer or shorter pieces if you need to adjust the length of your reach to the bars. Your local bicycle shop can help you with fitting the bike, but they may charge for that service if they do a comprehensive bike fitting. Basic suggestions and quick adjustments might be something a shop will help you with for free. Best of luck and I hope this works out for you!

    There is a single mount on the downtube in the normal spot where most bikes have a mount. Many bikes have a 2nd mount on the seat tube, but this bike does not have that, unfortunately.

    Can we put better parts on it like the crank/pedal and the handle bars/stem ?

  • @aaronbehindbars

    @aaronbehindbars

    Жыл бұрын

    Sure! It takes a standard 1-1/8" threadless stem, so that's an easy swap for stems and whatever handlebar you match with a stem. Cranks are a standard square taper with a 68mm English threaded bottom bracket shell. The stock bottom bracket is a pretty decent sealed cartridge unit made by VP Components, so if I swapped cranks, I would be tempted to stick with a square taper and keep the original bottom bracket. I am personally trying to spend as little as possible on this bike as I have several nice bikes and it makes little sense for me to do it. That said, I have a few things I'd like to change that I am trying to do on as small of a budget as I can. I have found some really nice sealed bearing pedals I've bought previously from Amazon that I installed. Also, I have a couple of low budget Amazon accessories I picked up for the bike. I should be putting together a short video on that soon.

    @@ghost2o7 I did use the springs on the quick release skewer as they make it a little easier to install or remove the front wheel. It is important those springs are oriented correctly. Of course, there is one spring that goes on each side of the hub, but the narrow end of the spring faces the hub and the wider end faces away from the hub. Here is a good tutorial on how it should go: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qm2mvLuvhdeThbQ.html

    Can we adjust seat height ?

  • @aaronbehindbars

    @aaronbehindbars

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, that is adjustable via a quick release collar as many bikes have. What you can't adjust is the angle of the seat. The attachment for the seat to the post is welded into a fixed position. It does allow a small amount of forward/backward movement via the seat's frame rails that clamp into the seatpost. Hope that helps.

    Indeed it is. That's the nature of Walmart markdowns. They still have some of these bikes, as well as a couple other Decathlon models, in local stores. Stay tuned to my channel for an upcoming video on another model from Decathlon that was on a significantly discounted clearance price. I also purchased via walmart.com, but this one was sold and shipped by Decathlon USA, so it's a marketplace item.
