Installing headers on a Big Block 460 Ford is not that intimidating. Just a few things to be mindful about. This also pertains to F350 and for that matter Motorhomes too. 7.5 liter engines from this era had a problem with exhaust manifolds leaking.. years covered are 1988 89 90 91 92 93 94 95 96 and 97 F-series trucks. hopefully this will help you out!! thanks for watching. More Tow power!!

    So i ordered headmen headers from summit. And today i went to install them. First off they sent me headers with air injection tubes which my truck doesnt have any so i cut them off pinched them and welded them but the y pipe they sent me only had 1 hole for an o2 sensor and i have a o2 sensor for each bank so i had to drill 2 holes in the y pipe for the o2 sensors. I also couldnt find the correct size tap to chase and clean the threads on the holes for the header bolts. Oh and that adapter peice for the egr tube broke so now i have to try and find some kind of angled adaptor like you did and see how its going to fit.

    A few years back I found a uses 1992 , F-250 4x4 with 460 engine. It's the XLT standard cab. But seems to be a Camper Special as It was already equipped with Banks Power including headers and K&N air box and filter. The headers go into a "y" tube and single exhaust. I'm wanting to go dual exhaust with an "H" tube. I also want to change the intake from that funky stock double tube and air box with the inlet coming up from low in the grill to a larger single air tube and cone filter. But neither Banks nor K&N seem to have such a set up.

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    7 жыл бұрын

    Tim Titus I always go with Header Mfgs recommendations.. I've run double gaskets on thin flange headers(blackjack, cyclone, flowtech etc..) But the flanges on the Hedmans are thick enough for singles and in the case of Doug Thorley and Banks they recommend no gasket at all on the 460 applications because just like the factory exhaust manifolds they need the exhaust to be able to transfer heat into the head so that the water jackets can keep exhaust temperatures in check.. This is because of the direct air injection from the air pump is making the exhaust run really hot for a cleaner burn for the one catalytic system in turn allowing the O2 sensor to read a leaner air charge running over it..

    Tim Titus Even with a MAF conversion, Banks still recommends no gaskets to be run with their headers. With the air pump connected, the heat that is being generated, has to be controlled by metal transfer with the head and maximum direct contact area, for that reason exhaust gaskets should be used only if the Mfg recommends them.. The whole air injection thing on these 460s was sort of a debacle. that's why sooo many factory manifolds crack/break/leak.. it's just too much heat. I fortunately don't have emmision testing..

    I'm from northeast Ohio as well. I saw your F150 on Craigslist. $2900 if I recall correctly. I never expected to see your truck on there after all the work you've done to it, but the tow ratings are a big deal and I totally understand. It's funny, I actually remember seeing your new blue and white truck on Craigslist as well. I believe I've seen it in person as well, but it could have been an identical replica. My 1994 F250 with a 460 has cheap longtube headers on it right now. Flowtech I believe, they were installed by the previous owner. I've been looking into getting quality headers for it as well. For me its between the Banks Torquetubes and L&L longtubes. I have heard nothing but good things about both, but the L&L headers are top quality at almost half the price of the Banks. I'm on the Ford Truck Enthusiasts forums and L&L is a very reputable name on that site when it comes to headers. Nice video! Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing to the new truck!

    Well hello neighbor! Small world. The old F150 is a great truck but it is time to change. If I wasn't doing all the towing that I am I would love to keep the f150. I am going to miss the smooth ride and more importantly the 17 mpg hwy. I just installed a new hitch on the new truck so keep an eye out for that video once I get time to edit. You know how it is this time of year in Ohio... The last few warm days you try to squeeze in all the outdoor repairs you can! The F250 I bought from a guy in North Canton when I was asking about the previous owner he said it was a guy in Malvern.. Come to find out I had saved the truck on my Craigslist app in favorites a year ago but before I could get the scratch together he sold it to the guy I was buying it from.. Must have been fate.. Thanks for watching..

    I give you credit for being energetic.Over the years every person i have known with headers had leaks to deal with on an almost continuous basis.I figure that a 3 inch exhaust right after the manifolds and maybe a glasspack would open things up.I was also taught that headers only make a big difference when the RPMS get higher. I wonder how plugged up the converter gets over the years.They sell 3 inch converters also. The truck sounded purty good.

    Tim Pope there are no aluminum head 460s from the factory. They are very very very heavy cast iron. I have zero requirements from the state of Ohio as far as vehicle inspections. As long as the car can drive down the road it's good as far as Ohio is concerned. The exhaust leak is annoying I really enjoyed having these headers on my truck but if you check out my other video I did convert over to the banks long tube stainless steel headers and I'll have to say they are well worth the extra money. Hi fox boss great job with the videos, disappointed to see the truck go but hey gotta do what you gotta do. Question for you- getting ready to put a dual exhaust on my truck identical to yours except it’s 4x4, my guy wants to put hi flow cats because he said it will smell bad and needs a little back pressure but I wanted to remove the air tubes and pump with eventually getting the banks headers. You said not to have cats with pump removed? Is that the same for the hi flow cats? Sorry last question, can i cap off the air tube tat goes to stock manifolds till i get the banks headers? Thank you and good luck with your new truck

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    5 жыл бұрын

    Make sure that your high-flow cats do not require air injection. A lot of them do not require air injection. Basically, what the factory catalytic converters require is that are blow on them from the air pump to keep them burning hot. As far as back pressure being needed, that's an awful long truck with a lot of tube and offers pretty much all the back pressure necessary. But there are a lot of people that run high flow cats however I don't like the extra expense. You can block off your air tubes just bypass your air pump so that you're not pumping air into a blocked hose and wasting a little bit of horsepower doing so. I wasn't a big fan of dual exhaust without having a crossover pipe close to the header collectors I always hated the way they make a cracking sound and the Scavenging effect of having a x pipe helps considerably. Thanks for watching! And yeah I missed the truck to as far as getting to work on something easy.

    Melvin no worries at all. It's just that they are better at shedding Heat then the old manifolds were. Whatever you do, do not put exhaust wrap around them. Within a short amount of time those things will deteriorate underneath that rap because they cannot handle that kind of heat being kept on them

    I have a E350 1993 460EFI Engine its a Montara/Tioga Class c It has a leak in the exhaust header passenger side the noise goes away after it warms up Already did A Flowmaster 70 Before the Axle out the passenger side everything else is untouched. Since I have the Dog House Access should not be a problem I hope. Figured on some quality Percys or Fel Pro Premium Gaskets and have at it! I figure on just doing the passenger side I am not looking for more problems. Jeff G well even though I didn't have a problem with my Hedman header install on the F-250 I expected it fully I just got lucky. My F-150 head bolts break. Then in this video link from my other channel kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnd5xpKtXbuzirA.html I had the header bolt break. Now the headers will come with bolts but you may have to reuse some of your longer ones for some brackets and retainers like the oil dipstick. If you still have your air pump on your 460 you may want to listen closely about running gaskets with your headers. The Hedman headers flange is thin enough that it's recommended to run a gasket however if you run an air pump it will heat up the exhaust greatly and potentially blow out the gasket due to the fact the heat cannot transfer from the exhaust back to the Head where it would get cool. Now in the video that I just linked when I installed the Banks exhaust system, which I highly highly recommend oh, did I say highly? Those did not require any gaskets because the flange is so thick and the quality of the exhaust is so much better but they're also so much more expensive., in short if you're running the Hedman headers definitely use good quality gaskets you'll have to retorque them a few times and expect bolts to be broken when you're pulling off your manifolds. The Hedman headers are decent but the banks headers are far far better. And you do not have to run gaskets with those.

    Thank You! I was afraid of that I just took the dog house off to get a better look and the weird thing is the noise is very non specific I assumed from outside it was on the passenger side almost sounds like A valve tick or maybe the fuel injectors? but I get up close to the passenger valve cover I hear nothing and the sound goes away entirely after it gets up to running temperature. I am going to get underneath to be sure its not the collector donut . Anything else that you know of that makes A Click click click noise? Regulator maybe? I have not worked on many Fords so I am orienting myself. I did find some old mouse poop around the rear of the intake nothing looks chewed on no electrical faults and none inside the Motorhome I got it used so I am going over everything it has 90k miles it was an older guys rig kept pretty good repair records but they date back to 2006 and stop. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS THANKS FOR THE HELP! The banks set up sounds cool this is the EFI with Overdrive its getting really good gas mileage compared to the older 1989 we had but I am hoping for more it had A huge exhaust system choking it out all the way over the axle then reduced even more into single inlet muffler to out 2 1/4 twin outlets this is a 28 foot class C Motorhome so its big but now I have the Flowmaster 70 3 inch coming out in front of the rear tires already sounds and feels stronger The Banks system might really get me going!

    Maybe if I was 20 and had a 500hp engine and I wasn't using the truck as a tow/work vehicle..... not sure when it changed, but there was a time you would only make a vehicle loud if it was fast. Seems these days, as it has been for the last 10 years, that people would rather just make their car loud and pretend it's fast.

    +Rusty Nail Had to edit answer on that.. This set fits 1988-1997 F250 and F350 Auto and Manual trans. IT May work on motorhome applications but you would need to contact Hedman tech dept to verify.. If i was doing a motor home I would save up for the Banks Torque Tubes they will last forever pretty much.. Thanks for the comment and question..

    johnny Ramirez Rock Solid platform.. no issues like the Triton engines had.. make sure transmission shifts right.. exhaust manifolds were a common issue.. But headers can fix all of those problems.. drive it easy gets maybe 12mpg, mostly 10 though towing on mainly flat ground 10mpg, drive like an idiot gets about 8mpg.. repairs are CHEAP.. I say it's a pretty decent truck overall just depends on price and condition... good luck 😁

    The 460 is a low torque pulling monster. Couple simple up grades will really open it up. Install a 3in exhaust, a K and N filter and headers. Once she is able to breathe right. She will pull no problems

    +SuperLinkandzelda you can start with just a quality muffler and pipe replacement first like this here >>> amzn.to/1o6s1pR

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    +SuperLinkandzelda then I wouldn't mess with the exhaust because once you start yanking stuff off, unless you have a pipe bender, access to exhaust pipe cheap, and a welder it's going to be expensive trying to keep whatever you "rig up" on the vehicle and not leaking.. You can make it loud for cheap by sticking a cherry bomb on it but a "nice rumble" can be hard to get plus it cost more for that type of muffler, which would be a welded muffler like that Flowmaster exhaust has. The cheap welded muffler is what I used on my F150 (look for my "walk around"video) but that muffler is not a direct bolt-on and required welding and adapters and didn't last very long(2 years) plus I had removed the Catalytic Converters and installed long tube headers so the sound in that video won't be the same on a vehicle running otherwise stock exhaust.. You may want to find a local exhaust shop that can help you first hand with your decision, because once you start Modifying you will always have leaks and support issues unless stuff is bent, welded, routed and supported correctly.. Good luck

    Got a 92 F250 XLT 4X4 with the 460, got some Hooker Headers on the way. What all did you take out and leave in place with the smog pump? I was told to remove smog and EGR by the local mechanic, but you said you left your EGR in. What was your reasoning for that? I've heard too many different reasons for and against removal of the EGR on the forums, and I'm really needing some solid advice. Great videos by the way!

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    Samuel Coleman in short, leave the EGR... It is an effective way to keep cylinder efficiency at its best for the limited computing power of the speed density pcm... Even with MAF it's best left alone...

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    The Smog Pump was removed and a shorter belt installed... That was it... Of course all the plumbing associated with it too... Remember, no cat converter should be used if the air Pump is coming off...

    Foxboss9 Awesome thank you! And if I'm dualing the exhaust after the headers, I was going to install an X pipe with an O2 sensor bung the same distance from the heads as stock. Or do I need to install two separate sensors for each side?

  • @Foxboss9

    @Foxboss9

    6 жыл бұрын

    Samuel Coleman if yours only came with one sensor it's okay to just connect One sensor. But you need to get it as close as possible to the X so it can see exhaust gases from both banks of the engine. However with that said, I have Run Exhaust with just one sensor on one header collector and for the most part it still does a pretty good job. You won't notice any difference really.
