96-Year-Old Kung Fu Master Carries on Ip Man's Legacy

On a weekday evening, Ip Chun is exchanging Wing Chun moves with his students, who are often a fraction of his age. The 96-year-old is the eldest son of Chinese martial arts legend Ip Man, the teacher of Bruce Lee.
Ip Chun said the philosophy of Wing Chun is to use gentleness to subdue strong power. He says his martial arts form helps him navigate the society and the way he lives.
Still traveling around China for martial arts seminars and having a regular teaching schedule, Ip has no thoughts of retiring. "I will keep teaching until I can't," Ip said. He vows to spend the rest of his life to keep his father's Wing Chun legacy alive.

    Ok, this man is one of my heroes. He's 97 years old now, yet continues to train, teach, and keep his skills and mind sharp, and the fact that he can remember stuff from when he was 6 or 7 years old speak volumes of how he has maintained himself. @Indigo V Ironically no. he started learning in earnest only when he was PAST his prime, & when he said he didn't get into a fight, he MEANT it. kung fu, at its core, is more about self refinement, a kind of moving meditation, than it is an actual fighting art. with an art that ain't combat-based, you'd get good enough with the routines & moves when you spend enough time honing them. actual fights ain't necessary.

    Real Kung Fu, along with real Karate, Ju Jitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Newaza, etc are all actual martial art forms that have been around longer than anyone's been alive today. Much longer. To judge the authenticity of them based on TV or movies or even competitions is absolutely ridiculous. You want to know what it takes to get a legitimate black belt in Kung Fu? At least 8-10 years of weekly training based on learning, memorizing, perfecting moves, sets of moves, taking tests, conditioning, competitions, growing significantly physically mentally and emotionally.

  • @ISZAudio

    @ISZAudio

    Besides the fact that Kung Fu doesn't have belts (some westernized schools use sashes but that's irrelevant here), absolutely spot on. It takes years of dedication and hard training.

  • @simkoning4648

    @simkoning4648

    Some of the martial arts you listed were created as recently as last century. Regardless, something being old doesn't necessarily make it better. A flint lock pistol is not as effective as a modern semi-auto pistol for example. Modern medicine is superior to 19th century quackery. I used to teach Kung Fu. I learned 2 systems, including wing chun. If you're a fan of Chinese culture and just want to learn what is essentially martial arts themed dance traditional kung fu is fine. Wing chun is okay if you want to learn a few hand trapping techniques. But don't bother if you really want to learn self defense or how to actually fight. If you want Kung Fu that works in a fight, learn sanda. Muay Thai, wrestling, boxing and BJJ are good too. If you're determined to be a "wing chun fighter", learn kickboxing or boxing first, then learn wing chun.

  • @simkoning4648

    @simkoning4648

    Btw, I'll add that most of those 8-10 years will be spent learning mostly useless hand and weapon forms. You would get more fighting skill from 3 months of Brazilian jiu-jitsu or 6 months of boxing.

    does winning a hundred fights mean that eventually someone won't take you down...? what if they're seeming a lot weaker than you? All it really takes is a single split second of not paying attention, and a steady eye, to crush your trachea, and/or smash the back of your neck (or both) , inducing swelling of the throat, possibly breaking the neck, causing hemorrhaging , swelling, cutting off blood to the brain, air supply as it gradually swells worse, even if your neck doesn't break, there's a high chance of dying, ...even if you aren't fatally hit, it does not take a whole lot to fracture the base of the skull and paralyze you. .....This IS of course if somebody really wants you dead/ or you want to kill someone... I recommend you weigh out the repercussions of that before trying it. Fighting really is a fools game, because its usually when people are just acting a jackass that we have our worst accidents, with a strength that we don't know we possess. Its less refined.

    Wing Chun, at its core, AIN'T a martial art that one can go pick fights with (why do you think Bruce Lee invented Jeet Kune Do in the first place?). if you just take some time to look into the moves & principles, you'd see that it's a defense art for fighting big yet unskilled & very much stupid brutes who have their arms extended all the time in a fight. getting good in Wing Chun is just like getting good in Tai Chi, by knowing the intricacies & subtleties of the moves inside-out, NOT by winning actual fist fights.

    Yo he said he's never been into a fight in his life..... There's no way he knows anything concerning physical conflict with another man.. So if the gets into the ring with a ufc trained skilled fighter, he's 100% going to lose, just think about it. He's never been punched in his face and scooped on his head. Lol I promise you he's going to forget years worth of faking and instant realization

    Wing Chung is a totally useless martial art. They never do sparring, so once they get hit they panic and training gets forgotten. If a wrestler or a boxer fought a wing chung master, the master would get quickly ko or the wrestler would shoot for his hips slam him them choke him out
