Kevin is amazing and we hope he will never leave project kamp. He is made for this group of lovely people. Really expected him to renew the tent with a pair of jeans tho!

I love every single member but I just appreciate Kevin endeavors so much, this video shows his resilience, towing the long heavy tarp on his own. Anybody would have given up, the sewing, the needles, my god everything. I am happy you finally got somebody to help you. I love the mix of "day in the life of" style content of the harvesting alongside the projects. Really gives a sense of the entire project and lifestyle instead of just the "things" there.

They are built for stuff like that, but obviously not that big. I did maintenance on these machines. With proper care, they are almost indestructible. You can sew leather with them with the right needles. I guess the needle and obviously the transport were the problem here, but the result is great!

The older machines will absolutely go through vinyl and leather, but you need to have the right needles for heavy use. I've got a 1947 Singer that will go through multiple layers of leather easily.

It all starts with accepting that not everybody is the same, then you have to notice that different people can have different skills. That's how it worked for millennia, and it still works this way. Have you ever thought about how many different specialists you need to build 1 earthquake proof building, and what the effects of corruption can be? I'm not really sorry but, this is some food for thought.

@@cathybrewer8958 Well Cathy, it isn't easy to explain my views/toughts about this project without insulting someone. Don't get me wrong I don't want to insult people who are dreaming. I've been following Project Kamp from the beginning, after I've binge watched the precious plastic project. But what bothers me is this endless noodeling about absolutely nothing, just like the hippies in the 60's and 70's, to me it looks like a bunch of older children living for the first time without parents watching them. There seems to be no bigger/final plan for the future, but at least they have yoga-decks, are vegan, and have some man-buns. And they have acces to the internet, and still they are more or less trying to reinvent the wheel. Dear Cathy, I hope my answer didn't upset you to much, but I also hope you will understand the point of view of an older man with experience in several trades and life in general. Tarp would have made a great DPC under your last project wooden floor.

That’s a project I’ve been repeating every few years… with the added hazard of a few feet of snow. :) I’ve combined parts from 3 of these “instant” structures to make a shelter for an outdoor kitchen/covered fire-pit. Combining a round comfy fire, a home-built rocket stove for cooking with windfall wood, and a BBQ for more numerous gathering.. A little welding, some rope-work, and occaisionally the added recycled tarp. Makes a great 3-season relaxation spot. This summer I built a floor for it using an old steel frame, and a whole of lot recycled 75mm x 75mm rough sawn timber that had been spiked together to make shipping rafts.

Here in United States we have giant roadside advertising signs (billboards) Many of these use printed, tensioned fabric and the covers get changed once the show, product, whatever has been introduced.

you probably want to have big washers on both sides on the rivet, because the tearing force applies to too small of an area otherwise. i would consider redoing the rivets and also applying something as a seam sealer.

Surprised you even attempted to sew it together, I would have gone straight to rivets and then melting the edges together with a soldering iron. Those tarps are made with a coating that melts pretty easy but they're thick enough that you can really weld two parts together, because that's how they're easy to repair.

​@@I_Scorched_YouIt was one side of a trailer tarp, those are very long but only 2-3 meters high. They needed a different shape, so they cut it unto two pieces and then connected those along the long edge to get closer to a square shape.

Melting yes, or you can even glue it with simple pvc glue

To the sauce maker: you can make the sauce without cutting the tomatoes especially since you have a stick mixer to save a ton of time and labour. If you add a micro amount of sugar and salt it will elevate your sauce.

@@snakey319 a micro amount of sugar activates the natural sugars releasing them. I was taught by an Italian grandmother from Rome and all they ever add is a pinch of salt and sugar for the chemical reaction. I assure you as a chef who cooked at a restaurant voted top 25 in the world to dine that you do add sugar. A micro amount.

Kevin is ingenious. Couple things to make the sewing process easier, special needles for vinyl/denim and a walking foot for the machine. It grabs both layers of fabric going through the machine. Normal foot is only using the ‘feed dogs’ on the bottom to move fabric along. I have seen where some people will make a frame for the machine so that the machine moves along instead of the big piece of ‘fabric’. Kind of like a Long Arm quilting machine. Great use of reused items

Good reuse of the lorry curtain tarp. Going to be interesting to see what else you can use it for. For example could smaller sections be tacked over wooden roofs to waterproof them? Maybe even use like tiles?

hope the pipes can bear the higher weight of the new tarp roof

Hats off🎩👌 👏👏👏👏 That tiny Singer and needle, for the task, was something for the books! Singer, your machine survived. This would make a brilliant Singer ad. 😅 Everyone working on the project is contributing and doing great valuable work too, and amazing Nuno providing produce. Guys, collect the seeds from everything. Dry. Store. Plant in season. You need a seed bank. I did a Permaculture certification, and that is one thing I do, no matter where am. Even if I go on holiday, I save seeds. It has become a habit. When I had to leave my country, the one thing I miss more than my clothes, furniture, etc, is my amazing, precious seed collection. 😅 If you do have a sweeping fire, you need to have an evac plan, and place where you can put important things that you will need to pick up and go in a hurry. If there are massive fires, one thing that will be difficult to find or buy will be seeds. Think about how many seeds are in all those tomatoes you bought? You don't need to eat the seeds when you are making a sauce. Everything in your system or project, no matter what it is should have more than one purpose. Tomatoes to eat, bottle, collect seeds to plant. You paid for the tomato's, let your tomatoes work for you. One tomato produces many seeds. All those seeds are potential plants. That includes berry seeds, etc. 😉🌱 Don't forget about bamboo. It is super strong. You can build structures. Scaffolding. You can eat bamboo shoots. The old white tent poles could be replaced with bamboo. You can build shelters with bamboo. Fences. Bridges. The sky is the limit. You would need to allocate a bamboo growing zone, if it grows in your location. Great work everyone. 🎉

Kevin is so productive and full of good ideas and solutions. I don't know what Project Kamp will look like without him.

I recommend looking for an old style shoemakers sewing machine. They are made for thick leather and usually have a larger arm for long reach. It could help with projects like this, but also for example the gloves from last video.

You actually need to first boil the empty containers for 10 mins, fill them with tomato sauce and then boil the full containers again for 10 mind to avoid botulinum etc

I would also suggest boiling off more of the liquid and straining out the seeds and skins.

They should really get one of those hand-cranked leather sewing machines. Inexpensive, strong and really sturdy. I love the one I have for sewing leather or tent canvas.

just binge watched from the very first video where Dave had a wet sock and was hating the rain, but now i see they have grown sooo much sooo quickly, wish they had shot a few vlogs during the winter times, also i miss Sarah from Nuno's farm.

Kevin is simply amazing in reusing used materials. Even "basic" projects are well thought off and will last a while!

So inspiring to see the broken tent repaired with other waste materials. A challenging reminder of how often broken things that are repairable just get chucked away - although most of us don’t have Kevin’s skill and ingenuity!

Kevin, you have a been really valuable resource for Kamp. Everyone has their strengths and knowledge. What a great recycle project!

I feel Kevin and i would get along quite well. We both have that DIY punk, upcycling, outside the box design style. I often joke i want to live in a dump just so i have access to more materials lol.

hello, I appreciate the projects you are working on. by next year you could build raised beds for yourself and grow your own vegetables. if you need help with the design feel free to let me know. with such a number of people as you, it would not be a problem to take care of it. I have only minor comments about this episode. I hope you used nylon thread when sewing the tarp to the tent. If not, it will tear during one season. the same applies to rivets. they have a small head and it was necessary to put a large pad under them or not to drill holes but to make them with a hot round object so that the edge of the hole remains intact and does not tear later. what is certain is that you could also use glue or an iron to stick both pieces together before sewing. personally, I would not put the sheet lengthwise, but rather crosswise in 3 parts. otherwise great work. as for the tomato puree, you could strain it and dry the solid parts and then grind it into powder and use it for cooking later. in this way, the vultures and grains only spoil the taste of the pressure. thumbs up for me

guys, next time when you need vinyl canvas, look up all the bilboard agencies. they usually have tons of vinyl that is unresusable for advertising purposes and they are willing to either give it away or resell for pennies. it is usually in top condition, since bilboards dont tend to hang for a long period and it looks much better than the things you get at the truck shop.

A layer of olive oil on top of the tomato sauce in the jar/bottle will prevent any mold. (A granma's tip I never forgot) Also, much love from France !

what could work is putting the tarp on something with wheels, like skateboards or such, so it moves easier through the machine. also: having 2 other people pull/push on the end of the tarp came to mind. your patience though is amazing! and it is astonishing what you made happen! :D great work and dedication!

Crazy sewing! 😮 But I think I would rather try gluing and welding it, and cut and join it perpendicularly, not lengthwise on the spine, which is most loaded when under tension.

Nice new tent!! A tip for future projects with this type of tarp: you can "weld" them very easily with a heat gun an a pressure roller. If you make the overlap large enough, the bond is watertight and very strong. These can be fortified mit extra stitchings. But i would recommend a bigger/stronger sowing machine 😅

7:33 use those to hang a Sliding door on in tight spaces. Just add the rail to the wall.

I think I like the recycling part best because I often repurpose things to save money. Plus, when something is still good, I hate to throw it away. Well done episode!

I stood pallets along the side of my metal frame and nailed wood across the tops and then lashed them to the metal frame. Very sturdy and wind resistant. This also encloses somewhat if you desire.

Should you find some additional vinyl or covering material, what pros use for large greenhouse operations that are highly UV resistant, you can tuck it underneath the pallets and have a nice really sturdy, even portable structure. Don't forget that every structure with a roof is a rain catch possibility. Have everyone think of suggestions by way of a drop box. Carry on in peace.

After you fill the bottle, cap it instantly and then invert it so that the trapped air won't cause the problem during long-term storage. ( Fill the bottle up to 90% of it's total volume )

the tarp remains looks wide enough to make a fun water slide into one of your swimming locations

If you have a combi steamer oven you can also sterilize the bottles all at once at 120°C + full steam. This way you'll spend less time and use less gas than cooking a big pot of water. We do this for our bottles when brewing beer and haven't had any issues with it.

Please note the potting of tomato process shown and described misses 1 vital important step. And this could lead to health risk After pouring and securing lid. You cook the bottled sauce for 10 min. And then pull them out. Put them upside down (so they stand on the lid side) and this will causes they create the suction process. (If not done properly you risk the bottles exploding aswell) therefor always let them cool off under a blanket.

i used to work at a pizza place, you can also make some bottles with garlic, oregano and basil, makes the sauce so much better, can also go and make your own versions 😄 like hot ones with chilli or sweet with honey/maple syrup etc

Well I knew the sewing machine was a bad idea but probably only from experience putting things through one that I should not have. I'm jealous I did not think of the rivets which are serviceable and strong but you should have used bigger rivets or used deeper ones with washers to prevent them from pulling through which will happen. Also you are sacrificing water proof for water resistant. I would have taken advantage of the 6 inch overlap at the seem and used a strong uv resistant adhesive which retain both stregthn on the seem and water resistance

I love all the initiatives shown on the Kamp and there's always something new to learn. But my concern with this one is the frame was not built for the weight of the tarp, and especially the tensile of the new straps. I would like to have seen some additional work done to the frame, using recycled materials to sure it up. Some lightweight bracing. But good job on the new cover.

Would recommend you try hot air welding with the siding sheeting from the lorry. Will give you a water tight seal!!

Great work with the tarp. But it must have been hell of exhausting. Did you consider putting the two halves on top of each other and roll them up to only a single roll? This way you won't get a double layer at the seem of course, but you would have had a much easier access with the sewing machine.

having some experience with sewing you'd be best off getting a REALLY OLD like 1930s motorized singer like an industrial armed sewing machine. Also using a LEATHER sewing needle would help a LOT. The kind of sewing you're doing at KAMP isn't really "heavy duty" but rather almost industrial. Or a large backhand stitch by hand using a curved needle might have honestly been easier lol.

you could have tried a 'quilting foot' on the sewing machine, it's used to sew quilts and items that are thick and helps feed the material through, where a normal machine foot would struggle.

Post one extra video a week exta, each week a video of a day in a life of one member. Would be great!

I would get a second tarp to put over the top; to act as sun-wear sacrificial material. That way it doesn't need to be awesome quality but it protects the good one underneath.

Next time I recommend using a speed awl tool. It is used for heavy fabrics and leather and is portable so you could have used it while the tarp was laying on the frame

Nice job improvising on the tent!👍 The tarp straps are an excellent material to hold it in place along with the rivets. Placing the rivets closer together will ensure that rain will not get thru.

Chossing mondays was the best option!!!

Truck curtains can be welded together using a heat gun very easy to do.

I love that you guys have an iFixIt screwdriver. Those guys are INCREDIBLE for fighting for our right to repair (and thus re-use).

You did great. What a job. My only thought is that the cotton you sewed with will not last in the sun, nylon thread would have been better. It is very fine, but manages the elements a lot better. Anyway, time will tell. If you were so inclined, another tarp could be dragged sideways around the tent and joined on of course for a lot more protection. Perhaps a portion of a third tarp could be joined on for an entrance. The world is your oyster... Best wishes.

I don't see why not to run (longer) traps up each pole on one side, over the peak of the tarp, then straight down the corresponding pole on the other side. Then anchor the two ends of each strap to the foot of its pole. This would eliminate the risk of the strap ripping out of the top and eliminate the obstacles from straps running away from the sides of the canopy.

Getting hyped for the 100th episode, I hope you are going to work on something big!

Kind of like a statue would be a centrepiece for a townsquare or a village centre. And than put it on the newly bought land where you wanted the main living spaces to be in the future so you can shape out that village centre like space already :D

I see you enjoy beer a lot on your dining meetings you should make your own brewery on the camp recycling old beer bottles and making new beer even for sale at the village who knows? And bee kipping is also nice way to pollinate the area around you and maintaining a healthy bee colony in the area is always nice for the ecosystem around you

Very nice reuse of materials, the material originally on the tent is great for temporary use but was never made to be in the elements long term. The new material should hold up much longer.

Bed sheets soaked in silicone make good tarps.

super nice projekt ...for the next time try to weld the material ...i do this with a normal heatgun to meld the rubber between the two layers and press it together with a peace of wood (burnt myselve a little 🙂 ) I made covers for my bikes and it last for about 5 jears now...sorry for my bad English
