RECORDED ON JANUARY 23rd 2024.
Dr. Adam Toon is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Exeter. He works in philosophy of science and philosophy of mind, especially on topics that relate these two fields. He is also interested in the sociology of scientific knowledge. Much of his work focuses on the nature of representation-both how our minds represent the world and how we use other forms of representation, such as scientific models. He is the author of Mind as Metaphor: A Defence of Mental Fictionalism.
In this episode, we focus on Mind as Metaphor. We start by talking about folk psychology, and how people think about the mind. We go through several different approaches to the mind, like the mind as a machine, eliminativism, behaviorism, instrumentalism, and Daniel Dennett’s approach to the mind. We then get into mental fictionalism, and discuss whether the mind exists, how to approach causality and behavior through the lens of fictionalism, self-knowledge, and the concept of mental representation. We talk about the extended mind thesis, and 4E cognition. Finally, we discuss the implications that fictionalism would have for epistemology, and how we think about the nature of human knowledge and inquiry.

50:40 Yes, language has epistemological primacy.

very likely the effect of the local gravitational field of planet earth makes the effect of the speed of earth’s rotation limited in both directions. that’s why in such a case the reference is the local gravitational field in each point and not the planet earth as whole.

Interesting conversation, but this is an example of why a lot in the scientific community criticise the philosophers. A lot of what this guy says, goes directly against the leading cognitive researchers like Mark Solms, Kevin Mitchell, David Anderson, Lisa Feldman Barret and so on. In many ways, this seems like the classic argument against philosophers where they present ideas without evidence

please for the sake of future generations of mankind, protect human thoughts (they are the exclusive properties of future generations of mankind only), they are not humans (mentally and psychologically), please, it’s for the sake of future generations of mankind not for me.

Notice carefully that everything has become centered around one thing, which is working to steal and pollute human thoughts or trying to refute them! But I noticed that they both groups coordinate and cooperate with each other !

The story is similar to when the astronaut landed on the Planet of the Apes, where the dominant apes took a hostile stance towards the human astronaut because he threatened their tower of illusions. But the issue is a question of mind and not a question of who dominates in physical strength and practicing theft and fraud. All of this will not be able to maintain their tower of illusions and will not change the actual facts.

52:00 Language became prior to thoughts! they don’t have minds, they think that they can keep their shaky tower standing for long time! titles can’t help them to maintain their delusions, that needs mind that they missing !

Haven't you noticed that everything has become centered around human thoughts ?! The concept of the self, and they talk about Descartes because they seek to refute human thoughts that have nothing to do with what Descartes said (the source of what Descartes wrote is explicitly religious), and how they began to talk about Carl Jung as a kind of obsession and began to distort what he said to build a polluted version of human thoughts , ….etc.

Mentality of gangs those who work hard to maintain their castle of delusions (that is the concise of the whole story)
