I 100,000,000% agree. All of my grandparents died before I was 14 and my mother in 2019. I only have anecdotal recipes from them. One is from "the Italians down the street" my aunt chewed my ass when I made it for them because I didn't "brown the beef" for a dish that was going to take hours. Now that's how she makes her spaghetti sauce.

I didn't appreciate or understand what I had waiting for me with my Nonas either. Now that I am old, I feel disconnected from my Italian heritage. When they came here, they told each other to leave their European roots behind. My Polish grandparents would not even teach my Dad Polish because, as they would say, "We are Americans now, we speak English." The Sicilian side of my family was probably the same way. If they are still alive, treasure your older parents/grandparents - you will never regret hearing their tales of the old country - it is, after all, your heritage, too.

These findings are mixed in with strong ties to Western peoples, presumably Celtic in origin. The intrigue remains unanswered today......

I’d take it. She has no rent, grows much of her own food, likely doesn’t drive so no car expenses. It’s not a fancy life but you get what you need. I live in Abruzzo and a lot of pensioners here live on about €700-€800 just fine because the cost of living is so low. They all own their properties and walk everywhere. Calabria is even lower.

There's a minimum number of years and a minimum amount each year you need to pay contributions for. Otherwise you'll get a "pensione minima", as she does, and as I will, too, despite working since before I even left school. That's what happens to people who've spent time abroad, worked "in nero" for years... tons of reasons why it can happen, and does happen to so many people. Working on your property, of course, doesn't count as work.
