    Thanks Farmboy! I just acquired a 1992 Silverado earlier this year & the stereo was dead! I understand that these OEM units are a nightmare of modular confusion, so I welcome the opportunity to install a regular old single DIN stereo in there. Again... thanks for the tutorial!

    Holy heck man you’ve been busy. Ain’t talked in 5/6 years, but we chatted years back. I drive a ‘95 Silverado. Replaced the engine two years ago and a hundred other things. Was scrolling through videos looking for answers to a current problem and came across yours again. Hope all is well. That 85 looks nice! God Bless

    It's interesting to note that GM made their electronics complicated even in the early 1990's. I had a 1998 non-Bose system Oldsmobile Intrigue and thank God the CD/radio combo was just all in one brick, with no other vehicle control systems woried into it. That's the last GM product I owned. Glad you got yourself a better stereo.

    Will it work just to leave the head unit and use the power wiring coming off of it to power my new radio or do I have to remove it? I was wondering if that might somehow filter the noise going into the aftermarket radio or make it worse? Also, it appears my hot wires are yellow and white? If that is what they are, then is the yellow the hot and white the neutral? I don't even want to use the trucks stock speakers. I have some of my own.

  • @farmboy30117

    You can do that, but I would recommend getting a factory wiring harness adapter so that you can retain the original GM plug. You can find them very reasonably priced on eBay or probably amazon or maybe your local auto parts store. You will also need an antenna adapter because the GM antenna plug is smaller than standard.

    You don't need the wiring harnesses that go to the cassette player or radio face plate on the dash. The main harness from the power and speakers goes to the receiver under the dash. That's the one you will need to hook up the new radio. If you stripped those wires, then you'll need to get a wiring diagram to figure out which wires go where.

  • @farmboy30117
    @farmboy3011710 жыл бұрын

    No, the factory wiring harness plugs into the receiver located under the dash near the gas pedal. Get an adapter to go from the factory harness to the new radio.

    I wanted to pull the radio unit, not the head. I took a look and said faa, there has to be an easier way. I watched your vid and no kidding, I got the box out in under 15 minutes and got the trim back in place. I was going to shove an inexpensive bluetooth audio receiver/amplifier behind the dash and use my phone for the head, but now I am pondering a regular stereo with the mounting kit. Anyway, your vid helped a lot. BTW, I am not 100% sure but it looks like you can leave the big metal thing in place and take the one nut out of it and lift the radio box up and out of the way of the bracket and than pull it out from one side adn leave the bracket in place. I have not tried that but it looks like you could just wiggle it out that way.

    That "whine" you hear is from a ground loop interference you're getting in the wiring and or how its grounded to the truck. When it gets louder as you rev the engine it has something to do with the alternator. But yeah that whine is a grounding issue.

    Yeah. I figured it out now. I didn't know the adapter had a figment for those plugs that plug into the back of the receiver. CAN I PUT A FULL DEPTH RADIO IN. MY UNCLE SAID THERE AN AIR DUXT BEHIND THE CASSETE THATS WHY ITS SO SHORT. IF I PUT A REGULAR SIZE IN WILL IT FIT COMPLETELY

    The adapter kit allows the radio to sit out away from the dash so I suppose you can put a regular size radio in there. I put a short one in mine because I didn't need the CD player.

    I wonder how hard it'd be to put a tachometer cluster in your truck? It was plug-n-play for my 98 Lumina and 95 Taurus. Thanks for the video. I'm looking at a Suburban (same year) and wanted to know how I'd go about upgrading the audio. I bet a navigation screen would look good where that empty box is now.

    I would assume that all you would need is a tach cluster and the wire that goes to the distributor.

    Does anybody know why you can't install the stereo into the center where the radio receiver was. It's just ugly and so far away from the driver when it's in the middle where this man installed it.

Could any body post a pic that shows the wire input output of the truck side so that I can wire the radio harness to the truck harness. Thanks

    You an get the wiring harness from Crutchfield or at Auozone. If you get it at Crutchfield - order radio from them too - you get the dash panel and the little square box as well as the wiring harness and full instructions.
