    the pizza tactic is smart but if the operator thinks its a prank it can backfire horribly

    It's become a pretty well known tactic due to the internet. I think most 911 operators know to take those calls seriously and ask if the other person requires help.

    @@auriellis I remember hearing about a variant (I heard about this story two decades ago, so I might be a bit fuzzy on some details, but I do remember that this did come with audio of the 911 call in question). This one was a 911 callback--someone had dialed 911 but had hung up before (or shortly after) it could be picked up. At first the callback was a normal callback (albeit with the original caller, hereafter OC, letting the 911 operator that things _weren't_ all right), but then the OC suddenly went into a story about trying to bounce a check for an important payment. It took the operator a moment to realize that one of the reasons the situation wasn't all right was that the OC's end of the conversation was being monitored (the story had come in response to a more open-ended question that the OC couldn't answer without making the threatening party suspicious--up until that point the questions were almost exclusively yes/no), and after confirming this, the operator stuck with yes/no questions as much as they could, now with the knowledge that the OC was feigning that the call had come from their bank. I do remember a couple of other highlights, where the operator was trying to determine who the other party was, and eventually asked whether the person in question was their husband. The OC replied, "Well, the problem was that the check bounced", which allowed the operator to determine that the OC's ex-husband was the perpetrator (quickly confirmed by the OC). Immediately after, the operator asked if there was any way the OC could let them know the name of the ex in question. OC replied "Well, that's just great.... great....", and yes, the ex-husband's first name did indeed begin with G. As I recall, the ex-husband was arrested and the OC (his ex-wife) was saved.

    That's why operators need to be trained to listen to the tone of the voice on the other end, background noise, and taught the right questions to ask in a situation like that. Honestly, these pizza ordering calls need to be used as training scenarios for new 911 operators before handling real calls.

    @@TheReal_CoachCason Not just 911 operators. as i said above, I heard a variant where a mom and her kids had been taken hostage by her bf and she managed to slip an SOS into an order on a pizza hut app. fortunately they were regulars so the staff at the restaurant took it seriously. the cops negotiated and the family was unharmed

    Had a handful of more memorable ones while 9-11 Dispatching in a rural area. Day before Thanksgiving a few years back, I took a 9-11 call about a farmer who had gotten caught in a PTO shaft while working on a piece of farm equipment. For those who don't know, a PTO shaft will easily and quite violently dismember a person if you (or your clothing) is caught in it. By some miracle, a hydraulic line got snagged when it took his arm in and the line was able to disengage the PTO shaft. Somehow he managed to keep all his limbs, though from the report pretty much every bone in both of his arms were broken in multiple places. Fellow ended up getting airlifted. Far as I know, he ended up ok, and as far as farming accidents go, he was insanely lucky. I'm sure his Thanksgiving was downright unpleasent, but it very easily could have been a much worse Thanksgiving for his entire family.

    holy hell all of these were really... sad (a few were somewhat okay but damn)... i can't image being on the receiving end of a frantic person yelling for help. my cousin's bf collapsed on the floor and was having a major sezure and she freaked out! ran around the neighborhood in just a t-shirt and underwear banging on doors to get anyone else to call 911 as she was doing that from the start but the lines were busy). from what i understand, the person on the other line was calm and tried to keep my cousin calm while asking for details. she told us that operator assured my cousin that everything would be okay and help was on its way. it was just nuts, i was out of town when this happened and only learned of this like 5 hours later when she was able to go to hospital to see her bf in stable condition. that story where the guy asked to have the hotel evacuated so that he can burn himself. efff me that made me tear up... and I'm so sorry for this, and i know I'm going to hell for this but, when i heard about the husband breaking the door with the axe all i could image was the scene "HERE'S JOHNY!!"

    The pizza story reminds me of another I heard where a mom used a similar trick with a pizza hut app. Her bf had shown up high and had taken the lady and her kids hostage with a knife. she managed to talk him into letting her use the app on her phone to order food for the kids and she slipped an SOS into the comments and address line. Fortunately, she was a regular customer which helped with the staff taking it seriously. The cops showed up and talked the bf down. Eventually he surrendered peacefully, with the family unharmed.

    What is a "fire number"? UK thing???

  • @sturmovik1274

    @sturmovik1274

    I would guess it refers to the actual direct phone number for your local station. That's how people used to have to call police/fire/ambulance back in the days before standard national emergency numbers were implemented. Still possible today for any station that's staffed 24/7, but the universal number is much easier and only a minute longer, less if you count the time needed to remember and dial the full number.

    Please take better scrutiny of the video in the background. Some people cannot or want not to see blood, being it real or digital. Video game footage is usually too hectic anyways. I'd prefer a waterfall or some kind of other animated still image. It is hard to read the text when the background moves.
