Loved your story... I consider myself a Geri-Goth. Teen from the 80s and was doing the all black clothes and lipstick, long trench coats, listening to Siouxie and The Cure, while completely weirding everyone out. And I am Black so that was ultra creepy for so many. I had no Goth friends (I was just the odd ball out amongst the 3 people I used to hang with) and so I was happy when the 90s came along and so many people got into it. Most of the people that I got to know that were Goth are no longer into it but it is so cool to see how many people still love this scene. You look absolutely stunning in all of your photos and it was wonderful to hear your history in the Goth world. :)

My mother’s coworker/friend, Misty, took me under her wing. She noticed I had a unique taste for a 12year old. She burned me a CD of the Crüxshadows at first. I fell in love. Instantly repeated the shit out of that CD lol than she burned me more mixed cd’s over 6 years of skinny puppy, switchblade sympathy, london after midnight, RiB etc. she kept feeding my soul. I admire her💕🌹 Every time she went out with my mother, she went all gothed out. Loved her fair pale skin, midnight dark hair, and black lips smell of Misty’s cigarettes. Even when she didn’t go out, she still kept her casual goth clothes with her awesome boots and simple makeup. Always looking mysterious 🌹 She told me about the goth clubs & taught me the dances. It was a phenomenal process💕Lost touch with her when she moved to Florida. I know I’ll probably get shit for loving Crüxshadows, but it was my first introduction and brings memories when I had the time in the world to get lost in the beauty of darkness, and goth out without having any sort of responsibility getting in the way.

***** I agree! It would have been great to have a digital camera back then. The memories that could have been recorded! These younger gens have no idea about the struggle of relying on a disposable. When they worked it was great because the flash washed you out and made you look white as a ghost but then other times the film was sometimes overexposed or the photos messed up in some way. Hmm, there's a idea. a 'Know the Struggle' video.

Ahh I'm so glad I found your channel!Though I was a child in the 90s, I will never forget the first time I saw a goth. (It's a long story but I figured I'd share.) I remember going to the mall with my family once and seeing this girl walk by. She was beautiful, dressed in all black with long shiny black hair, a long black dress... I just stared at her. I thought she was so pretty and mysterious looking, I literally thought she was some sort of princess or something. lol I asked my parents who she was... (like they would know lol) and I remember my mother saying she was a devil worshipper and to stay away from people like that. I also remember my father saying, "I'd never let my kids dress like that." Though my parents aren't bad people, I don't think they really understood what a goth was and were more afraid of it than anything. I, however, became incredibly curious though. Ever since then, I've always been fascinated by goth culture. I dabbled in it when I was younger, much to my parents dismay, but after a lot of bullying and a lack of goth friends, I didn't have the courage to continue. I've still never stopped admiring it. To this day I still have an urge to dye my hair black and indulge in that childhood dream :) I know it's a random story, but seeing you immediately gave me a flashback of that day. I'm now a new sub to your channel and just wanted to thank you for bringing back that wonderful memory. :)

Thank you, I'm so happy you enjoy my channel. Thank you for sharing your story. It sounds as if your parents just didn't understand the Gothic subculture. It's a common misconception. So many think it has to do with devil worship when in actuality the majority of Goth's I know are atheist or agnostic, like myself. I'm sorry you were bullied. Some people develop their sense of empathy late or sadly not at all. Fortunately now there's much more of a tolerance to extremes and Goth is no longer an extreme-- There are for worse things for society to pick on! I wish you felt more safe/secure to be yourself. It's so much better to regret something you did rather than something you didn't :/

Of course now I have a severe vitamin D deficiency so I probably should have considered that :/ I'm so glad you liked the story. I want to come back with some more stories of growing up goth. If my daughter decided to go goth I am afraid I would push her to the more romantic look. As a teen I took goth so seriously i was also convinced I was a vampire, drank blood from a couple of friends, made a ouija board, regularly hung out in cemeteries, set things on fire, turned other kids goth and had a posse of minions following me. I got guys to crossdress and wear lipstick. Also even prior to being goth, I got suspended at elementary school for bringing a knife to school in order to participate in a witchcraft ceremony. What can I say, no regrets!

Yes yes yes the choker started it all for me as well lol then black lipstick then the music then the realization of i was alive when surrounded by dark everything mutual angst of all things cutesy, the backpacks decorated with white out, scaring the preps at school, constantly being asked to touch crosses by everyone (im in the bible belt), chains blacklights the MUSICCCC oh the days ooh yes manic panic hair, sneaking the black eyeliner on at school i really miss the 90s. good shit. im 32 btw so my first intro to the music was nin and marilyn manson. then it branched out from there to everything, black sabbath, judas priest, etc. the craft was a huge movie. i was and still am a devotee of all things occult. ;)

I really like your videos and I hope you continue to make them! I've always felt that goth is more of a mentality than being defined by how you dress or look. music can play a pivotal role in opening yourself up and embrace another side of life that is not considered "acceptable" by most of society. throughout my years of discovering the darker side of music that was not played on the radio for the most part, I was drawn into the beauty and appreciation of sadness, depression, or even an attunement to nature, as well as love and loss. instead of listening to the popular cock rock at the time (mid to late 80's) my mom was introducing me to bands like the cure, Depeche Mode, joy division and many others. side note: Type O Negative is my favorite band of all time and their music perfectly sums up what I'm trying to get at. Depeche Mode's "Violator" was the first album that I ever owned and I played it so much the cassette broke. eventually that led me to finding other dark electronic sounds and some metal bands, which drew me in to another aspect of goth culture which is the literature and entertainment side. books, video games, role playing games and movies helped to broaden my idea of the culture and mindset of being goth. another very key element for me is the love and inclusivity shown to me by others in the goth community. I have never felt so openly accepted before than when I stepped into the local goth night downtown for the first time, and I was wearing jeans and a pastel yellow button down shirt. we goths have been pushed aside and ignored in so many different ways and I will always be thankful to those of us who show no judgement towards anyone they meet as long as that person does not give a reason to be disliked. anyway, I know this is a long post but I just want to tell anyone who might read this that you don't have to look like a goth to be considered one. Thank you for making these videos, it is nice to see another (relatively) older generation of goth still gong strong. Embrace the darkness, but always keep love and respect at the forefront of your soul. :)

This makes me wish I had taken more photos myself during my younger years. Actually having BEEN a vampire, I'm convinced I simply didn't appear in any photos taken of me through some sort of dark curse. :P I just naturally hid from would be photographers I suppose. Smiling for pictures just didn't fit my M.O. of the day. I went from New Wave, to Metal to Goth in the span of about 4 years. By the time I hit college in 91 I was in full blown Anne Rice, Corsets, ruffled shirts and long flowing skirts, latex clothing, fishnet and bondage gear mode lol Ahhh, the good old days.

This was my first video of yours I watched, and I would love to see more. Despite my name I am hugely into the Gothic subculture. My journey began when I was feeling a bit out of place in the world, and I remember one of my Punk friends and how she is. I decided to ask her about it, and she sent me a link. She also, sent me a link about the Gothic Subculture. I read about punk, but it didn't tie into my feelings as well as I would have thought. The Goth link she sent spoke deeper into my soul. Thus my excellent, and a amazing journey began. I researched it more, writing names of bands and listening to them, learning about its literature, the different fashions and sub classes, etc. Then, I learned about Steampunk which also spoke to me in another way. I love the music, the literature, and the fashion, however, the more I turned away from the Gothic subculture the more I began to feel lost. I like the idea of Steampunk, but I know that I am closer to Goth. So, here I am.

When I think of goth I see corsets, long skirts, bats, vampiric aesthetic, dark makeup, fascinations with odd things, Peter Steele (

Alexandra A I was traumatized as a youth by this infamous video that Trent had. Supposedly it's fake but it was never meant to get out. Someone stole it and made copies. It's a snuff film. It was called 'Broken' and it was a vhs, poor quality because it was a copy of a copy and so on. It's quite graphic where a man is kidnapped and forced to watch NIN videos and is violently tortured and murdered. It's online now I believe-- Trent swore it was staged and fake but that looked far too real. I was 15 when I saw it and that had me disturbed for weeks.

As a growing adult still loving sports my pals tagged me as a sporty goth since I was goth and still pushing sports and it worked for me. I love this video and can't wait to watch more of your channel. My 90's Goth years were so crazy and fun. My "transition" was pretty quick, though I sometimes blended Goth and Grunge. It was my hair colorist who "turned" me. Yes, I tried blood too, and kind of liked it; I stuck to licking my own wounds though lol... The difference is that I'm about 10 years older. I had finished college and started my first real job, so I was corporate professional by day and Goth by night and weekend. (I looked very young for my age well into my 30's.) Lately I mix things up a bit more, but I feel like getting back to what has always felt most real to me. Thanks for the inspiration. So I'm old! It's harder to tell in Goth makeup. Is there any Goth scene in NYC these days?

I have just subscribed to your channel, as I feel you really understand us 90's Goths and the scene at the time, it's a relief to be honest. :) I had to laugh when you mentioned the part of believing you were a vampire. I got into the Goth scene already in `91, and was devouring Anne Rice's trilogy religiously and all her other published work. I came to a point where I actually believed that Lestat was alive, and that I this mere mortal was meant to walk eternity with him. INSANE..I know! :D :D

I started off with symphonic metal, and my partner started off with metal and industrial. The older kids at my secondary school used to decorate their bags like you did (I wasn't allowed to! And then I got sent to boarding school...) I kept wanting to write 'Evanescence' and 'Marilyn Manson' and stuff on them... You look beautiful in that senior photo! It looks so Romantic Goth, and those two props were perfect.
