9 Things Your Nails Can Tell You About Your Health

Evidence-based: www.healthnormal.com/nail-hea...
Nails are the last thing to grow back after an injury or illness, so they're a great indicator of your overall health and well-being.
Nails grow at a rate of about 0.1 mm per day, which is why they are such a good way of knowing how your body is functioning.
They also have nerves that send information back to the brain when they are touched or injured. This can be really useful if you want to know whether an injury is serious!
Nails can be affected by diseases such as psoriasis, diabetes, and kidney disease. They can also reveal whether you have any deficiencies in key nutrients like zinc, iron, or vitamin B12. In this video, we are going to be talking about some interesting things your nails might be trying to tell you about your overall health.

Interesting fact: I had surgery and had on my usual nail polish using dip powder (no artificial tips). After surgery my oxygen readings were low and I had to go on oxygen. They kept reading my oxygen levels with end of finger clip on device. After a few weeks of being on oxygen with continued low readings, another nurse made me turn my finger 90 degrees within the clip and my oxy levels were great. She said the nail polish can interfere with the readings!

I got ridged nails after being in hospital some years ago for a month with pneumonia ‘n pleurisy & having a VATS decortication procedure. Whether it was the pneumonia or the large constant doses of IV antibiotics, I have no idea, but I’ve had longitudinal ridges ever since. Also heaps of wrinkles appeared at every joint in my knuckles too. They’re still there too.

I went to the dermatologist a few weeks ago to get my annual mole check. I told the nurse lady that asks a bunch of questions before the doctor comes in, that I wanted my nails looked at because I have pitting, bad ridges and beaus lines. Doctor comes in and does mole check and I forgot to ask him about my nails. Wouldn't it have been written down? Why did she even ask me then? So I still don't know if it's a concern or not without making another appointment.

I have very ridged nails now and I have Crohn’s disease and for the 2nd time in 10 years I have extreme!! Low calcium and vitamine D. in my country your vitamine should be between 75 and 150 (even some people say that during the winter it can be between 50 and 150….for older people, so not me!) and my level is at 13 right now so it explains everything! And my calcium was at 2 and should be higher then 3,5. But calcium was fixed with an IV with calcium (within 24 hours I felt like a superhuman for about 48 hours with that new level of higher calcium!) And not only did I have ridged nails on 2 nails I also had 2 strange looking nails 👀 it looked like they were flaking (is that how you say it in English?) peeling of from the nail bed side……but ever the calcium IV that stopped immediately 😊

I really liked the video, but again I was disappointed because they did not give any info. On a problem nail. Several times over my life I noticed my nailbed suddenly very sensitive. When I look closer the 1/3 - 1/2 of my nailbed, where the cutical connects is pealed/stripped of parts of the top layer. Example: when you remove a piece of tape from the roll there is a snag the piece tears jagidly. Then you have to go back & peal the remainder that was stuck/ left behind. Sorry for the length but it's hard for me to explain briefly.

Never had that happened to me before. couple of my toe nails had a little yellowish tint and growing kind of funny. I started putting some tee tree oil with some coconut oil and doing pretty good. Calcium issues doesn't cause white spots on nails that had already been debunked. Missing lanula can most times be due to genetics and just not seeing them. Yellow nails is seen with red and orange nail polish. Nail ridges are common with age as well as iron deficiency which is really common with girls and women. Before you freak out thinking you are dying just know a lot of these are not sinister.

I thought the longitudinal lines in my nails were from old age. They have always been extremely hard. In regards to psoriasis, yes I have had a severe blistering psoriasis and it will lift the entire nail right up off the nailbed. I would see a good dermatologist if I was having nail problems. Don't go to a busy clinic style office. Find one with a private office and no more than one PA. Some Dermatologists don't even treat psoriasis. They just want the easy cosmetic cases.

For 68 years i had brittle, breakable nails. One day I dropped some IODINE on one nail when I was dropping it onto a deep cut near the cuticle. About 3 days after that I noticed that the nail growing out was as hard as a rock. I decided to put drops onto all the nails and see what happens. Now i use an eye dropper once a week to drop Iodine onto my nails at night They do go brown at first then by the morning the brown is all gone. All of my nails are now absolutely rock hard. I have to use strong clippers to trim them. I use very little IODINE so a small bottle lasts me for months. Maybe my body was short of Iodine and the drops fix the problem. I have noticed that my hair has also grown thicker and at 71 has still not gone grey. I do so love nails that do not look ugly and hair that does not break or is brittle. Just do not swallow Iodine or use it in any other way.

About 22-3 years ago, I had just started to go to a dermatologist who also had a Pathology degree. I had, at that point, been dealing with a systemic disease for well over a decade, but my doctors were not sure what...something more rare. Roughly once or twice a year, for about 6 weeks at a time, it would rear it's head and I would feel lousy and get these weird bumps on my fingers. The Dermatologist got me in just as it started to clear up....but he had a good idea of what it was. Told me to get in right away next time. Next time, couldn't get in again till as it was clearing up...even though I told scheduling that the dr wanted to see me right away. Soon after, he changed his office into one of those skin care Spas that could care less about diseases. So, THANK YOU Kitty!! I will look for one w/o a SPA attatched. Will most likely have to go to a small town near by.

I bit my nails my entire life up until about 8 years ago. My nail beds are now permanently deformed. Now that my nails are growing, they flair up and out because there's no nail bed for them to grow on . I have to trim them much shorter than a normal nail would have to be. I don't know what a woman in my situation would have to do if she wanted longer yet normal looking nails.

I know another lady that has the same 2 fingernails that do the sme thing. I'd love to know what vitamin or mineral is low in my diet that causes this.

Anyone knows the cause of why skin line under nails are not same level (not perfect curve or line), which make the white nail part (that you cut) has different length and difficult to cut without leaving some. I hope these make sense.

Dear Deborah! my Mother had this too for over 50 years. no Doctor could help. than she wanted to clean something and put her Hands into chlorcleaner ( in Austria "Danchlor") and it disapeered. :-). but you can put sterillum classic Pur on it - thatś harmfull and after a few weeks the nail will grow new and nice. I hope so! love from Vienna - Tünde

Tell us something we didn't know fifty years ago. Your nails are subject to the blood flow of the finest capillaries. So in addition to being time recorders of your health for the last few months, they can react as quickly as a few hours to what you have eaten. A sudden dry brittle or cracked finger nail can be caused by eating a lot of butter or fried food that day.
