9 Reasons Why Fishbones are Better than Gunder Tech Float Grip Foot Pads for Onewheel

Creating a concave solution for the front footpad of the Onewheel is a risky matter. Modifying your front footpad is similar to modifying the gas pedal of a vehicle. You are messing with the component responsible for controlling movement of your Onewheel.

These are my 9 reasons that Fishbones are Better than Gunder Tech Float Grip Pads. Many of my reasons are somewhat subjective so in the video description I'll elaborate on the more important ones.
Gunder Tech touches the sensor, Fishbones does not - Most importantly you should know that Gunder Tech pads are Not an off-sensor-front-concave solution! Gunder Tech adhesive is placed over the sensor and much of the product itself is resting on on your footpad, especially if you are using a more coarse grip. Fishbones are not applied over the sensor and the product is raised and elevated over the pad until pressure is applied.
Greater chance for debris to collect under Gunder Tech pads than Fishbones - Though the chances are very very small and will vary person to person, there is a greater chance for debris to collect or get caught under the thicker Gunder Tech pads. This could lead to unwanted sensor activation
Fishbones are asymmetrical - Fishbones are strategically shaped to match the shape of the board and are toe-side heel-side specific
Other thoughts:
Gunder Tech pads never gave me a "false start"
On rare occasion I have had a false start on my onewheel with fishbones. People with a 10 to 11 size foot, using V2 fishbones or earlier would experience a rare "bridging" issue. Their foot would not contact both sides of the sensor when mounting and starting the Onewheel. I have never had a false start when preforming the advanced jump-mount method. The extra pressure from jumping ALL WAYS started my onewheel vs the lower pressure of simply rocking forward to start the onewheel.
Because Gunder Tech pads contact and rest on the sensor, false starts do not happen.
Fishbones on the other hand, have reduced false starts for my children who have smaller foot size. Check my review for that in my onewheel reviews Playlist.
Gunder Tech pads at first felt kinda nice. At first I really liked the feel of my phalanges (toes) resting on its surface like a ramp or gas pedal. my excitement, however was replaced with fatigue in my toes and area of my foot that impacted the Gunder Tech pad. They are too aggressive and 3-stage-feeling for my liking \__/. If you like aggressive pads then these are a great cheaper option for front and back foot-pads (if your ok with the small impact they will have over your onewheel sensor)
Gunder Tech is much cheaper than Fish Bones. Shipping is even included. I'm a no-frills packaging guy. So I actually prefer Gunder Tech packaging... Except for the lack of any obvious instructions that I could find. I'd say that I'd rather have just my fishbones sent to me without the baggie and stickers. Others may feel different. This might lower the cost too? I'd like to see fishbones price reduced to beat other concave solutions, even those meant for the rear footpad.
Some people think Gunder Tech pads look better. Maybe they do, maybe they don't... That is subjective too. Fishbones look the way they do for functional reasons as I have laid out in the video.
There's likely a very good chance a rider may never have a single problem with Gunder Tech pads, because the impact they have is minimal. I know many riders like them. Great!... but I didn't like them for multiple reasons.
Ill have an ebay link on a later date to sell my Gunder Tech pads. I didn't like them enough to even use as a rear concave solution.

Great job identifying many of the design principles that went into making Fishbones a safe product. I've had boards ghost as well, and tested the early protos of Fishbones. (I'm one of the co-creators and co-owners). One problem was that during the winter months, the change of temperature when you stepped outside with your board was problematic. A fast change of temp from 70F (indoor) to 30F (outdoor), for instance, caused a slight contraction on all the glues we tested and that contraction pulled on the sensor in uneven ways underneath the velcro which led to pretty reliable ghosting. We couldn't recreate that effect in low humidity cold environments (Denver), but it was very predictable and we could recreate the ghosting effect in higher humidity cold climes (Atlanta). That issue drove the design principle of completely removing the glue of any adhesive away from the sensor. Also, keeping the 'bones hovering above the sensor pad allowed the Fishbones to stay completely clear of any interference with the sensor. We worked really hard on the design and tested for thousands of miles all over the country because a ghosting board is a very scary thing. Safety first! I saw that you also grabbed some Barracudas with the full grip pattern. IMO, those are our best product, and you'll feel 100% locked-in. Stoked to see what you think about them!

Thanks for sharing! Also I enjoy hearing more about the history and hurdles of designing the fishbones. The appearance is easy to pass off as something simple like "hair combs" that sometimes people will make jokes about, but a closer look along with a cautionary experience/understanding for ghosting really opens one's eyes to the thought and detail of Fishbones. I can appreciate the design and effort more. Edit: Barracudas *look* great and I have a good imagination on how they'll feel. Hope to try them later this week

Fishbones are awesome, you'll love them. I recently had a ghosting issue with ignite grip tape with foam. It's like traditional tape but with a thin layer of foam. When I installed it it must have had a small bubble, despite that I rolled it out carefully with a cylindrical shaped object. This was the last straw for me. It has also cemented my feelings on Fishbones. Many People have foam grips and other things on their front pads without issue. I may be particularly unlucky (but not alone), but I've decided I'm only using traditional grip tape and fishbones from now on. Not worth the risk. If you put a new grip on before adding fishbones, be sure to give the new grip a thorough testing that there are no bubbles. This way you won't waste the adhesive on the bones if you have problems with the grip itself

Hey man been watching a lot of ur videos keep up the great work not many people are making videos like yours. I have a question hopefully you will be able to answer for me. I’m about to get my first onewheel pint and have been looking for accessories for it. My first upgrade will be the front bumper with wheels from carbon smith and I wanted to know if you might know if I can still get upgraded rails and float bottom or would I have to go with all of carbon smiths gear due to compatibility with other brands making there own upgrades. Thank you! Keep up the awesome vids

Thanks man, sorry for the late response. Land-surf also sells a great fangs bumper for the Onewheel Pint and much cheaper. I'm not positive but I *think* float plates are compatible with carbon Smith. You may need to email Carbonsmith and ask them. I have the carbon Smith ones and they've been fine. If I needed a replacement I'd probably buy whichever was cheaper 😅 P. S. I've seen people put the float plates on with the Land Surf bumper. Land surf bumper is more compact than carbon Smith. If there was any kind of problem with float plates fitting carbon Smith I would say it would be the curvature of the end which could potentially be heated and curved back? Again I'm not sure

It's just a strip of leftover traction padding from my local SUP shop. It helps prevent marking up and dinging the walls in my house when Onewheels are set down near the door.

@@tylerjames7200 luckily I got a notification from KZread on your response 😅. Seems like sometimes I never get notifications when people comment on my videos. Thanks for the compliment. Flight fins were something I never got used to. I ultimately decided that I wasn't going to use them anymore. I just enjoy the carving. I'm almost 40 with big family and don't need the extreme experience anymore 😅. Flight fins requires a more narrow stance (unless using extensions) which I don't like (I'm 6ft tall) Also it's not convenient to share onewheel with flight fins if the other person rides opposite foot forward. One of my daughters is opposite foot than I and it makes it uncomfortable. Give them a shot if what I've said isn't a deal breaker for ya. People do some amazing things with the fins. Edit, I do like the flight fenders though. I like the look of them and the ability to easily go partially open Fender... Especially if Fender gets dirty or muddy. Easier to clean.

As a scientist, you tested both these boards by shoving pebbles under boards of two generations of sensor tech, the XR and Plus, that it was an acceptable control and comparison, it’s insulting. This is not truly accurate or fair. The variables you used (pebbles), you shoved DEEPLY and unrealistically unless trail riding in extreme circumstance under the Fishbones or Gundartech Hex, also not fair. I’m not even an owner of either the Fishbones or Gundartech. This is just bad. Stop.

Thanks for your thoughts. I did actually mention the bias and unlikeliness of a pebble getting stuck. Maybe I didn't emphasize it enough. Yes people do trail ride. Yes some do so extremely. Dirt can build over time. If you set your board on its side then dirt will fall and collect. Everyone has different dirt or soil or moisture in their area. But I did forget to mention the two different generations in tech. So thanks. No it's not fully scientific, but it's informative, especially for and from someone who has experienced ghosting. All it takes is a small bubble under improper application of grip tape to cause ghosting. Have a righteous day

Basically they add concavity without touching the sensor when the rider is not engaging the fishbone. The gunder tech ones touch the sensor lightly (not as safe), are aggressively angled, and are NOT specific for left and right. Fishbones can even improve sensor activation for small feet that's been shown with my kids. Appearance is subjective.
