One of the things I have learned about small engines is that it is absolutely vital that they have short interval oil changes during break-in. Even the highest quality small engines, like the Honda 2000W “suitcase” type generator will make oil look like pearlescent glitter paint after the first half hour of operation. I change the oil after first half hour with no load, then after each tank of fuel until I can no longer see sparkly metal particles in the oil under bright light. THIS is how you get long life from these small engines. I break them in with 10W-40 diesel or motorcycle rated oil. Then I run them long term on 20W-50 motorcycle oil.

I too live on the coast and have since 1970's. I needed a genset as well, but instead of diesel, I went natural gas/propane. You dont need to ever worry about your fuel system being messed up, gummed up, dirty, if you use Natural gas.

Problem with diesel is they like low rpm and the generator running at 3500 is going to cause a lot of torque on the belt. Especially if you load the generator. But Diesel is the way to go. They are very efficient and have loads of torque. I would mix some lubricants with the diesel fuel to help the fuel pump survive our very dry diesel fuel. Some motor oil or 2 stroke oil. Our low sulfur diesel doesn’t give much lubricant to the fuel pump or the injector.

@@gwseymour - Right. Starting batteries are a pain in the butt to maintain all the time. Small diesels like this are easy to start in the cold with just a whiff of hot air in the intake with a propane torch and /or a rag soaked in engine starting fluid stuffed loosely into the intake.
