DEADLIFT SHOES GUIDE: thatfitfriend.com/deadlift-sh...
If you're trying deadlift heavy and move big weight, then you need shoes that can support your performance. There are a ton of great deadlift shoes out there depending on the goals of your training.
I wanted to put together a video that provides you with viable deadlift shoe options based on the context of your training needs. All of the shoes in this video work well for heavy deadlifts despite not ALL of them being technically labeled as "deadlift shoes".
Whether you're powerlifting, cross-training, or looking for an awesome barefoot shoe for deadlifts, I've broken this video into multiple sections to help you find awesome models for your needs.
0:00 Deadlift Shoes
0:32 What makes a great deadlift shoe?
1:46 Budget Deadlift Shoes
3:50 Cross-Trainers for Deadlifts
5:31 Deadlift Shoes for Powerlifting
7:28 Barefoot Shoes for Deadlifts
9:11 Final Thoughts
I wanted to put this video together because I review so many different models of shoes for different needs, I think it's important to recognize which models within different categories work well for certain exercises.
This way, you as an athlete and lifter, can know that they're purchasing the right model for your overall training needs and you can have confidence knowing that your shoe can tackle heavy deadlifts well.
Note, the more niche you go with your training goals and strength sport, then the more niche you'll likely want to go with your shoes.
If you have any questions on this video or have models that you LOVE for deadlifts, drop them below!
I definitely didn't list every single shoe that works well for deadlifts, for example, I don't have any wrestling models in here - so I'd love to hear your thoughts on your favorites!

Hey, y'all! Quick note, there are definitely some shoes that weren't listed in this round-up that work really well within the context of heavy deads. For example, wrestling shoes work really well as budget options and NOBULL Trainers work well within the cross-training setting. I don't want this list/video to be a definitive "only use these shoes" type of video, but instead, a video that provides options for a bunch of different contexts. If you have questions about a model not listed, feel free to ask. That is all!

Coincidentally, my On Cloud is the worst offender for heel slip to the point where over the years the heel part of the shoe is already worn down (so are my socks).

The Prios are a good looking shoe. My next pair of barefoot shoes will probably be the 360, but I haven’t worn my Prios down enough yet.

I use Vans slip on. It takes away any overthinking if my laces are bit tight or loose (which i sometimes do). Just straight to hammering away. But I wouldn’t mind using Jordan 1 lows or dunks for some flashiness. 😅

Which shoe do you think is better for squat and deadlift? The sabo deadlift or the Adidas hvc2 and if they are not a good option for both terms what shoe do you recomend? Thanks, from Spain.

Tbh, I think both will work equally well! Adidas you’ll save a bit more. They can def be a good option for both. In regard to squats, it also depends on if you like the higher boot construction and a zero drop to squat in. If so, then either work!

Hey, great video! I was wondering, I have trainers that are obviously not great for deadlifts or squats. I’m currently debating between Chuck taylors, vans and barefoot shoes. I kind of want a pair that work well with both squats and deadlifts, any advice?

Depends on what you're after! Converse/Vans will give you a bit more sole, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it will feel different compared to barefoot shoes. IMO, if you want a flat shoe, then you can't go wrong with any of them, especially for general training. If you're getting super specific with your deads/plan to compete, then I'd suggest going barefoot shoe for that context to limit as much stack height as possible, but it's not necessarily a must for recreational lifting.

Hey Jake! been watching a bunch of your barefoot shoe reviews and thank you! A set of Xero Prio fits my overall needs and was curious if your sizing is a 1:1 between Chucks and the Prios, or is there any half size difference? Thanks for any help!

  • @thatfitfriend

@@cheekypro2914 Trust me, it's frustrating AF so the confusion is definitely warranted. Plus, most Vivo models size differently which only adds to the confusion. IMO, you'd be safe rocking the 42 if you wear a 42.5 in Nike models. That size should give you enough length in the toe box without feeling too floppy. If you pull the trigger on that size, please keep me posted because it helps a ton to hear sizing feedback from the community due to the vast differences in Vivo models and what I recommend based on what other sizes others are already wearing!

What about NO shoe? I prefer to DL in my socks. I feel I have much better proprioception and total freedom to splay my toes. Why buy a barefoot shoe, when you can just go barefoot?

  • @thatfitfriend

Great question and I'm the same way! I'll deadlift barefoot 7/10 times. Barefoot shoes are nice to have though especially in commercial gyms or in spaces where you can't go barefoot or in socks. Plus, they can be nice to have & implement in other ways outside of deads. That being said, definitely don't need a barefoot shoe by any means if you like pulling barefoot or in socks and can do so in your gym without being told to put shoes on!
