9.3x62 Mauser North Fork Bullets 232gr Copper Expanding Ballistics Gel Ammo Test

Ойын-сауық

North Fork Bullets 232 grain Copper Expanding .366 caliber bullet loaded into 9.3x62 Mauser cartridges fired from a Husqvarna Mauser bolt action rifle chambered in 9.3x62 Mauser with 23 inch barrel.
Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios with this caliber.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

For 18 years the CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser was my Alaskan Guide rifle with countless Brown bear one interior Grizzly downed and some 25 Yukon Moose taken down with it. I have used the Norma Vulcan 232 bullet that works outstanding, but I stay with the Barns TSX 286 grain bullet that fits my ranges of use of the 9.3x62. My 9.3 reloads nearly are on par with the 375 H&H magnum

What an old beauty! My goodness that rifle is gorgeous. That's a great old cartridge. It will definitely get a good bit more performance than the load you used. As you said it was a little on the light side. And still impressive performance! It's a real banger with a full load. Man, you keep coming up with really cool guns. 👍👍 Came back to tell you I've got just under 2600 with a 200 grainer.

That's a really nice classic rifle. If the rifle is accurate with those bullets, then they are viable hunting ammo for large game. Some rifles don't like all copper bullets so have to test for accuracy because what works in one rifle may not work well in another. Anyway, the 9.3 is a really underrated cartridge, but well designed and capable of taking any game with the right bullets. Thanks for the test.

9.3 x 62 is pretty popular here in Victoria, Australia for our Sambar deer. It'd be interesting to see a light copper bullet really humming. I do like that penetration though!! A high shoulder shot would be devastating no doubt.

Possibly my favorite cartridge to reload. I only have one 9.3x62 now after selling my sauer. Currently have 98 mauser fitted with XS ghost ring sights for my brush gun. I load it to 60,000 psi (like 30/06) and it’s phenomenal. Just have to make sure it’s modern firearm or large ring mauser. Current loads are 286 gr sp pushed at 2510 fps with ramshot big game powder. Other load is 250 gr accubond at 2630 fps with varget. Such a great cartridge, I’m not sure if your rifle was a large ring or small ring mauser but even a small ring should safely push that bullet to 2500 fps. I used factory loads one year the norma 230 gr eco strike and that factory load was super accurate and left my barrel at a shade over 2620 fps. Took a nice hog and 8 pt with that combo that year. Copper works great just gotta have enough velocity for good expansion. Thanks for the test though I enjoyed it very much.

I’m wondering what the velocity are between the one that was more shallow and the one that was deeper my guess is if you pick up velocity that things can violently expand more and shallower penetration. I’d didn’t expect great expansion and wide expansion. All copper bullets never do. I’m a cup and core fan . I’d rather get a big wide expansion and fragmentation for better energy dumping performance. Great video

I have 18 years of using a CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser for my Alaskan guide rifle that has been used on countless Brown bears one interior Grizzly and 25 Yukon Moose. Many make the mistake claiming the 35 Wheelen and 9.3x62 Mauser are the same that is absolute Wrong! The 9.3x62 Mauser cartridge is 007" larger that is why attempting to use 30-06 cases to make 9.3x62 cases blown out smoke in your face from split 30-06 cases fired in a 9.3x62 chamber. In power range the 35 Wheelen has nothing on the 9.3x62 and the 9.3x62 shoots bullet up to 325 grains. My loads for the 9.3x62 Mauser are right in the commercial loads of the 375 H&H magnum. I am using 71 grains of H-414 with a Barns TSX 286 grain bullet.

@@dalebenson6859 there’s only five grain difference between case capacities of the two (72 grains vs 77 grains) and a .008” difference in projectile diameter, .358 vs .366. The big issue is the 9.3x62 projectiles have even less offerings/options than a .358 offerings. Why argue when you can own both…like I do. I’d still use and take my whelen over it just because I can load it with 180 and 200 grain projectiles for deer hunting. I also like that I can just neck size 06’ brass instead of trying to find limited run brass in both calibers. Most own them just because it’s a unique caliber and will never use either of the above caliber for anything bigger than deer which they’re both overkill for…but imo fun to shoot. If I need more horsepower I just use my 375 RUM.

I handload and shoot the 9.3x62 as well as the 35 Whelen and 375 H&H. You may want to try some slow burning powders and bring the velocity up (if it’s safe to do so). That bullet is behaving like a 350 gr TSX in the 375 H&H, namely, “more like a solid”. You’ll probably find that a monometal will shine (expansion-wise) once the velocity is high enough. Lovely old Mauser and fabulous shooting! Enjoying your videos very much! (P.S. try the Swift A-Frames and, if you can bring some in, the South African “Rhino” bonded bullets. Those are excellent, even at more sedate - 2,200+fps - velocities).

You need to invest in the Quick-Load reloading program, greatest thing when handloading old or odd calibers. You can add bullets to the data base and do load development in the program. I've used it for years for a wide range of calibers including my own 9.3x62. I can usually get the idea load (bullet, powder and overall length) by doing it through the program then only loading 15 (3 loads/5 rounds each) to verify the program. Has saved me a lot of time and cost in powder/bullets in load development. I'll have to give these a try seeing Kalifornia is a lead free hunting state.

If your going to use those types of bullets in an old rifle you need to use lighter weight rounds instead- try 200 grn or less copper rounds don’t work well if they are heavy they only work good when moving fast, light rounds move fast heavy ones do not 👍🏻

I was thinking Barnes only touts 1.5 expansion from the TSX. 1.6 x of .366 is hurting whatever it hits...think 20 gauge slug diameter with 800 MORE fps. If it will expand down to 1800 fps and about a .3 bc, it should still be an elk/moose thumper to 200 yards at your loaded velocity. So very close to 35 Whelen in performance is probably why it isn't more popular in USA. The .366 only has a 4% cross sectional advantage over the .358, so no huge gain to offset the scarcity of ammunition and rifles. That said, I would not turn down a gift of a Mauser rifle in such chambering.😉

I have 18 years using the CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser for my Alaskan guide rifle and used on Brown bears one Interior Grizzly and 25 Yukon moose. All my loads are 71 grains of H-414 and a Barns TSX 286 grain bullet. And Yes, I have found the Big game powder for the 9.3 is much better than the H-414 by shown from the Chronograph testing. I started with a 338-win mag then came the 9.3 that with no and if or but about it the 9.3x62 used on big mean animals is far better than the 338-win mag due to large bullet diameter. My 9.3x62 Mauser has been so impressive 8 of my Alaskan hunting clients bought them self-rifles in 9.3x62 Mauser. Some of the clients are East coast white tail deer hunters who would complain how white tail deer run after being shot by a 308 or 30-06 and now using their 9.3x62 Mauser they tell me the deer hit the ground in one shot and don't get back up.

2500fps would be the absolute minimum for these 232gn projectiles. I'm loading the Woodleigh PP and RN in 250gn at 2540fps out of my 22½ Inch barrelled Tikka T3 Lite. I can get more but the muzzle flip is extreme in such a light rifle so I backed the load off to a more manageable level. I'm using AR2208 (Varget) which is ideal for these types of medium bore cartridges. I'm about to experiment with some of the Australian made monolithic Atomic 29 .366 cal projectiles in 220gn and I'm sure that I'll get them zipping along quite nicely, possibly up to 2700fps which would be a great advantage. The 9.3x62 suffers a bit from lack of velocity with the heavier projectiles and hence lack of hydraulic shock, especially if the shooting distance is further so a lighter projectile travelling faster may be an advantage. The 9.3x62 mauser is a fantastic do everything cartridge for medium to large game, I'm using mine on Sambar deer and the weights can vary from a calf at 60kg to a full grown stag at 250kg+ and the 9.3x62 handles them perfectly.

Maybe if I needed to break through a ton of bone. Like maybe something huge in Africa. For big game in north America I would never shoot that.
