9/11 Stories: Dr. Peter Ilowite

Музыка

Dr. Peter Ilowite is a dermatologist who was born in Manhattan, with both sides of his family being native New Yorkers. As a child, his dad would take him down to Greenwich Village, where they’d hang out with the hippies. This is a man who is passionate about his love for New York City.
On 9/11, Dr. Ilowite and his wife, a nurse, were living in the NYC suburb of Montvale, New Jersey. Watching the tv coverage of the attacks on The World Trade Center, Dr. Ilowite knew he had to help, just as he did in 1990 at the height of the NYC AIDS epidemic, when there was no treatment for the disease mysteriously killing gay men. Dr. Ilowite chose to do his year-long internship in the AIDS community, knowing his service would make him a better man and a better doctor.
Peter was so obsessed with getting to Ground Zero on 9/11, that when the military stopped him at Houston Street, blocking anyone from going further, Ilowite persisted. After showing his medical ID card to a truck driver taking rescue workers downtown, he hitched a ride on the back of the truck, where he ended up helping out at a makeshift triage center set up at Stuyvesant High School, joining 8 other doctors who also independently made their way to Ground Zero. There were no lives to save after the collapse of The Twin Towers, but they treated rescue workers, who had suffered burns, blister and lacerations. Hours later, The U.S. Army took over the medical triage. Dr. Ilowite estimates he spent just 12 to 24 hours at Ground Zero, but that short stay, breathing the toxic dust, was enough to worsen his lifelong asthma to the point that a case of flu years later almost killed him. His pulmonary function is so poor that at age 59, he qualifies to go on disability, which he refuses.
Severe respiratory illnesses and 68 cancers are scientifically linked to the World Trade Center dust, even if someone just spent just hours in the area on 9/11. No matter their prior medical history, victims are entitled to free lifetime health care in every state and, if certified with a physical 9/11 illness, compensation from the Victim Compensation Fund. Dr. Ilowite has no regrets. He and his wife now live in their beloved New York City.

Dr Ilowite, I’m so sorry your family hasn’t been supportive of your actions that day. You are living your Hippocratic oath. By questioning your actions those who are physicians themselves have long ago abandoned that oath. Shame on them. It’s like… if you don’t want to help, at least don’t stand in the way of those who do want to help! I am sorry your actions that day worsened your asthma. Even if you don’t want to go on disability, at least cut down to part time work. It’s pretty hard working with chronic illness. I know that first hand. Yes, you should be proud of your actions that day. You helped a lot of first responders who were pretty darn traumatized and needed your help. SOMEBODY had to do that, right? That somebody was YOU! Thank you very much for sharing your story!

"I helped with skin issues but if it was someone else maybe who jumped off the building, that was way out of my league, they weren't alive anyway." LOL He just rolls with the train of thought. Great guy, I'm glad he survived and I hope for his best health.

A true hero who thought nothing about himself but put others before himself in order to save the lives of those who were affected by 9/11! Was no different than those firemen who walked into the face of danger in order to save the lives of others! Am so sorry his health was so impacted.

I’m only five minutes and 12 seconds in but he’s already wipe his nose at least twice so I’m sure he has the runny nose/rhinitis I think it’s called that they all seem to have that were down there. Such a shame that such true heroics so many displayed that day are given the thanks of being so sick. And if not yet, they have to worry about it for the future.

You are so right! Those who suffer with acne or psoriasis or any skin problems, can be kind of pushed to one side by doctors who treat organs inside,as if their disorders are not serious, but they suffer and need sympathetic doctors like you. Don't mind the comments your family made regarding your risk taking. They may be right to scold you, but they shouldn't. You did what you did with the best of intentions, so try to ignore their criticism, and don't allow it to affect your confidence. It may be best to tell them that nobody knew the dangers, once the dust settled. It was a new situation.

@@smooshiebear80well if you're ignorant just say that you've clearly never been through trauma and don't understand how it works and changes your mind especially to help you get through it and go into survival mode. Things like that don't matter and they fall away from the memory because they aren't important at the time and they are important to when and why it happened period a trauma mind doesn't focus on stuff like that it focuses on the meat of the situation

@@captainfoxheart Thank you for the explanation, but I just said that’s why SOME people might find it strange. Please don’t assume things about others you haven’t met. Everyone experiences things like trauma differently.

21 years later and we celebrate today those who lost their lives when Americans of all ethnic backrounds were attacked and died. They died at the WTC, in jet planes, as heroes fighting the terrorists, at the Pentagon and the volunteers who suffer now; from toxins. Your anger is strange.
