My Grandparents owned a house at the very top of hard pull both directions, about 2 miles each way, coal trucks would pull loaded for what seemed 10 minutes, and then would shift and then down the other side, didnt know it at the time but they were 238,s and 318,s? once i got older I learned what they were? My 1st driving job was a 238 powered 9500 GMC, figured out quickly why they sounded so good as a 6 year old ?

We’ve had Detroit diesels in a lot of our fleet vehicles and equipment. 471, 6v71, 8v71 and 12v71 and probably more. All our drivers enjoyed those old trucks because they we so dependable. Over the years we’ve slowly been upgrading to newer trucks but we still kept the old gals in our reserve fleet. Our newer trucks have Cummins and CAT engines which are fine but I sure miss the sound of the Detroit’s. We put those Detroit’s to work all day everyday, sometimes 10 hours nonstop. They could take a serious beating and ask for seconds. Very reliable engines and very easy to work on compared to our newer diesels that have so much electronic and emissions junk. Our old Detroit’s were simple, rarely broke down, easy to repair, parts were widely available and they just plain worked. They may not be as powerful or efficient as our new trucks, but when the newer trucks break down and believe me they do, we know we can always count on our old Detroit’s. Most of them are stock but a few of them we’ve modified to make them a little more powerful and reliable. The only issues we’ve ever had with them is their fuel consumption. But once your cruising, it ain’t too bad. The exhaust systems have valves that can switch it from muffled to straight pipes, which reduces driver fatigue and is handy for areas where noice is a concern. I’m glad the boss decided to keep them at least in reserve. We take them out from time to time just to keep them going.

The only thing wrong with them is EVERYTHING after you’ve spent a 10 hour day in the cab with one. They sound good, I love them. But they’re hard to put up with all day every day. Most of the trucks these came in had zero noise insulation, so the loose fitting cab parts rattled with the engine noise. I have some hearing loss from it. They were called “Screamin Jimmys” for good reason.

@@MFKR696 well I hate to break it to you but if you have a 8v71 330hp Detroit non turbo and then you have a 8v71t 350hp with a turbo. The 8v71t 350hp turbo will get better fuel mileage hands down!! Because that non turbo 330hp is wide open throttle 95% of the time and the 8v71t 350hp turbo is only full throttle 65% of the time because the difference in power and torque between the 2 is a night and day difference!!! And I know this because I have owned both.

They had alot of power but if they missed a gear heading up to dump with double trailers loaded with 20 tons each they would jack knife the trailers and float the valves! There they were with bent valves crossways on the haul road! What a mess! But they performed great, plenty of power. @Sally Hillal In my experience the 92s are junk possibly the worst engine ever built they blow up all the time. I don’t know what GM was thinking when they thought that it’s a good idea to try to get 1000+ hp out of an engine this small I had a pair of 16v92s in a boat constant failures! Needed overhaul every 2-3k hours! Having to inframe an engine more than once a year is inexcusable! Were talking liner o-ring failure rod failure cracked heads broken rings valve issues spun bearings ect this is not just one pair but everyone who has them and they put them in just about every 50-70ft sport fish ever made The 71s are bulletproof 15-18k hours between overhauls the little workboat Has a pair of 6-71s they go 5 years between overhauls and it’s only done because of oil consumption issues! the 149s are good but the power to weight ratio sucks for a high speed diesel a 12v149 was 10,000 or so lbs and is only 650hp at 1800 rpms no experience with 53s 51s or 110s But the EMD 645 is the best engine ever made used to work on a boat with a pair that had over 200,000hours on the original engine obviously it had many sets of power assembly’s but the block never was machined the crankshaft was never replaced or ground best designed engine ever I could change all 12 cylinders in less than a day (did one underway once) but the 567 and 710 are equally good

Only about 5% of diesel mechanics can make a Detroit Diesel run to it's full potential. Mac's Produce in Raleigh had a fleet of 8V71s that put all other 8V71s to shame, they would outrun trucks that were rated at higher horsepower.
