The next 3 were released together, the Bluetooth, the 2.4g, and the wired. Bluetooth is wireless, has hall-effect sticks, and can do bluetooth, 2.4g and wired. It's for Switch and PC. 2.4g is wireless, can only do 2.4g and wired. Switch and PC. The wired is for PC.

Nintendo came up with the ABXY layout, it was Sony and Microsoft who came in and changed it for some weird reason. I personally prefer the accept button being on the right, but it’s nice to have options. Most PC games will let you remap anything to anything anyways.

Sony actually stuck to that design, in Japan at least (and in some games like Metal Gear Solid) where cross is “B” and Circle is “A”. I think Sony Computer Entertainment America chose to model themselves more after Microsoft, probably thinking they’re an American company doing well, so they copied a bit off Microsoft to appeal to Western Audiences. But yeah, I actually prefer the way Sony (Japan) and Nintendo do it. Xbox always threw me way off.

All Japanese version of games always use the circle as the confirmation as that's what they use when they check stuff (mostly in tests) and X being cancel for obvious reasons. It still is weird that western consoles opt to just do the opposite of what made more sense, like why would X make more sense to be confirm when it generally means "no" to most people?

No mention of 8bitdo's Ultimate Software that allows you to remap everything and adjust stick sensitivity etc. (or did I blackout when it was mentioned). I use this all the time with my Pro 2 and I think this controller works similarly. Works on Windows, Android, and iOS. Three remapped profiles (plus the default layout) can be stored directly on the device and switched on the fly. Truly a game changer for me!

  • @Khajitxi

The ultimate software that isn’t compatible with the Bluetooth mode? That doesn’t have an option to bind button or keyboard combinations to the back paddles and leaves you forced to bind a macro if you want an approximation of that? Which still has issues because hitting a macro disables all other inputs until the macro is finished executing? It’s physically a good controller, but they need to do some more quality control on their software execution. I probably should have gone a step down to the cheaper option since I was expecting to be able to use the back paddles in Bluetooth mode. It can randomly decide to be a different player when which is a never ending source of frustration when you have a working controller that is connected when you test inputs through various means to see if is perfectly functional but the games you have active do not respond to inputs. And I had to figure this out myself because there is no official documentation for this problem. I have not yet found a fix for it other than restarting which is an unacceptable solution to be forced into.

Nintendo had a lot of firsts with their controllers, the ABXY buttons as you say also if memory serves correctly, the shoulder buttons, a trigger button on the 64, the first thumbstick, rumble, etc, possibly even the first 6-axis motion control. Nintendo don't get the credit for the huge innovations they have made in gaming as they aren't seen as cutting edge for machine specs. They had their fingers badly burnt with the N64, stupidly went with gamecards in fear of their games being copied which restricted the quality and size of their games due to limited data and allowed Playstation to give them a spanking. The Playstation was originally designed for Nintendo but because they refused to go down the route of more easily pirated CDRoms they designed their own cartridge based N64 instead and Sony continued with the CD machine selling it themselves. Greed has cost Nintendo dearly many times over the years, the GameCube with its tiny discs once again for fear of piracy and then again, the Wii-U where the screen could only be used within 10ft of the console just to make sure that customers still had to buy a DS/3DS and a completely different set of games for mobile gaming. I wonder would Sony have ever entered the gaming market if Nintendo would have continued a partnership with Sony. I also wonder will Nintendo ever use common sense over greed. They could have been the biggest Games Company ever but squandered each and every opportunity for the small dollar.

I've had this controller for about 4 months and used it extensively on a handful of different kinds/genres of games, both on PC and Switch, and I gotta say it's overall a very very solid controller. Probably my favorite controller, which was previously the PS5 controller, and before that it was a tie between the 360 and Xbone controller Really my only complaint is that the shape of the controller feels a bit too narrow, so my wrists are bent more than they would be with most other controllers with a wider grip. After long play sessions (2+ hours) my left wrist in particular can feel sore unless I consciously hold the controller with an unnaturally loose grip.

Hey Ryan, thanks for the video. I own this controller and it’s my fav gamepad for PC and switch, I few things you missed in the review that might have been worth mentioning . The dock contains a 2.4 dongle in its base (no need to buy one to use with this controller). The components of the Xbox and ultimate controller are a bit different, primarily the sensing tech used in the sticks, the ultimate controller uses hall-effect to detect position of the sticks, this is to eliminate the chance of stick drift common to switch controllers. The last cool thing, that I wouldn’t expect from you video, but is cool anyway, the screws are standard Phillips cross head screws, so it’s easier to repair and mod, as compared to the Xbox that uses security screws and the switch Pro that uses proprietary bs screws. Love your content, stay awesome.

I have to give Feedback about the Part of the Button-Layout: I think it's not fair to complain against Nintendo for "missing Layout-Unification", because Microsoft are the ones which messed up. Look at the SNES-Controller, released in 1990(!), which already have the typical Nintendo-ABXY-Layout. Sony was nice enough to put completely new Symbols on a similar shaped Controller in 1994. But Microsoft in 2001, on the first XBox, must thought something like "y'all mess up with Nintendo-Players around the world" and also uses ABXY, but placed them everywhere else than Nintendo did. Nintendo sticks with it's Button-Layout since then, and so does Microsoft...

"I get where it comes from." - shows Gamecube controller. Clearly you don't. The labels on the buttons have been reversed since the original Famicom since the Japanese read from right to left. In Japan the confirm and cancel buttons have almost always been that way even on modern games. The swapped buttons were only a thing outside Japan and only started on the 5th generation of consoles. Even then it wasn't as standard as you may think because some games used the top button as cancel.

There exist coupon codes if you look, I used a 10% off that the seller had on their Amazon page, paid $63 for the ultimate Bluetooth edition controller, that’s including 7.25% sales tax. Coupons are less common with Nintendo stuff unless it’s a general store coupon or store sale. But I’ve seen several bigger coupon codes, like 15-20%, after I ordered mine on a whim. Also, the hall sensing sticks put it leagues above the Nintendo Pro Controller in that alone, and that’s not counting the other defects common with the Pro Controller. Kinda weird you give it a 3/5 for value citing the Switch Pro Controller as a price point given those two things. It comes in $10 less than the DualSense, and on par with Xbox Series Controllers and competes with those better. You seem to treat it like it’s a switch only controller at some points (even if it were, the 2.4 ghz option, and hall sensing makes it better than Nintendo’s wired or Bluetooth only Pro Controller with drift) One positive that I haven’t seen any other review mention is the direct comparison to the Pro 2 controller, in size, features and price point. I’ll say this video was certainly a different take than I’m used to, and minus my criticisms it was a good video. You get a sub for making it through this criticism and for making good content.

I bring this up because it is in the same general position of the A button on the SNES controller. One thing I've learned over the weekend is that this haul magnetic triggers are very overrated like a lot and I mean a lot!!! I've seen too many videos of guys falls praising these magnetic sticks that a a used in the Sega Dreamcast ban in the days and there is a reason why they dropped those sticks, they are very far from accurate and the calibration is always easy off. I would confirm that people should stay at from magnetic haul sticks. I recently bought a gulikit zen pro controller and they are trash!!! Dpad sucks, the analog sticks calibration are terribly off and not even the built in switch calibration mode can't fix them. Also the controller has did lag and latency out of the box. 8bitdo makes best controllers on all levels so I'll give this one a try before I give up on the overrated haul sticks. Who knew, mabye 8bitdo may be the one to get it right. I've read reviews where people confirm that they are having the same issues with the magnetic sticks

For 60 bucks you get the base, hall effect sticks on the Bluetooth and wireless version, and two back buttons, and you managed to say a dualsense would be better 🤦‍♂️ Dualsense and xbox controller are a rip-off, even moreso the pro versions. In 2024 hall effect is a muat and it's not that hard or costly to implement Lets pay 70 bucks for a controller that will drift after 6 months of intense use

Who cares about a dock. Real question is...does it have HD rumble? NFC? If not then it's a easy no for me.

Yes I do care about the dock (definitely a lot more than NFC) because then I dont ever have to worry about charging the controller.

I cared about the dock, it does not have HD Rumble, it does not have NFC. The Hall effect sticks and mappable buttons are nice touches for me personally. (Edit to reflect it does not have HD Rumble)
