    Suggestion #1: Dome the can. The weight of water/mud on there may pull it off when driving. Suggestion #2: Fill as best as you can, the TPS(report) with a silicone to fill in the rest of the plug. Those should keep that sensor bone dry.

    Well, I just bought a new fuel pump assembly, since the engine was starving and popping at low gas but over 3000rpms it felt like a serious turbo kicking in (not downshifting, gear was locked with my manual selector), but I'll use this guide to check the TPS too. Keep working on that nice computer, which I'd call the Nixer BTW :D

    Yeah, in small print is should say "All Vehicle 96 and Newer." You probably only got a generic OBD-II Reader, but even if it did as far back as OBD-I, the Renix even pre-dates that. It's coming along well, hoping to have a few Alpha test models ready by the end of the month if everything falls into place. It's a lot of work, but strangely enjoyable .

    I have a 1994 XJ, are there any adjustments that I can make to the TPS for that year? I'm having the erratic shifting in my auto transmission (AW4) and, on a couple occasions I would be at a light and go to accelerate, but the Jeep wouldn't go anywhere, despite the RPM's going up. I changed the TPS twice and currently have a brand new one (Duralast from Autozone), but the erratic shifting is still there. Shifts from gear 1 to 2 very early, 2-3 seems normal, but then in gear 3 the RPM's go past 3500 and it won't go into 4th gear, until I let off the accelerator. I've done the TV cable adjustment several times and also adjusted the NSS. I am due for new tranny fluid/filter, but does anyone think that alone would be causing these shifting issues? This is my daily driver, so I'm hoping for some ideas on what else to look at and hoping my transmission isn't on it's way out. Thanks in advance!

    I've always had some idle issues, even some stalling. Couldn't ever find the problem that fixed it completely. Replaced IAC, TPS, CPS, O2 sensor, and bored out TB. Haven't stalled in a while but it still idles low (about 400 rpm). Used to have a pretty rough idle too but that's gone now. It's been a while since I've tried adjusting the TPS again, but the last time I did it, I could have sworn I read the voltage from the 3 pin connector even though mines an auto. Just another reason that I need your custom scan tool

    That would be a really neat idea but it is way out of my league. You could fit everything into a little dongle that could sit under the hood on top of the connector. It would require an arduino with bluetooth ability and then a lot of coding to make a useable app. I don't have even the foggiest idea on how to write android apps so maybe someone else with a lot of time on their hands could figure that one out. haha

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm, that is peculiar. I'm not going to lie, the Renix idle speed is one of the few systems that still completely baffles me. It just seems so random at times. First thing that comes to mind is to check the NSS for engine load sensing. See if you can bump the starter when in reverse or drive. If you can then the NSS might need a good cleaning or adjustment. Beyond that, Intake Manifold leaks or large vacuum leaks can cause major high idle issues so check around for things like that. Maybe unplug the IAC next to the TPS and see if anything changes or doesn't change. Does it still Rev well? Any driveability issues beyond the high idle?

    You may have to confirm both sides of the TPS still have a full voltage range. ECU side will control idle, TCU side will control shift points. Pick which one is more important. After it's calibrated, pull the battery cables to reset the ECU so it learns the new position.

    Can you do a video for a grounding problem for fuel gauge. I keep getting a past full tank reading and I replaced the whole fuel pump unit. Please help!

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    8 жыл бұрын

    It looks like the fuel gauge is a simple resistance to ground circuit. One of the three wires going to the fuel pump will be the gauge wire. That runs through the float resistor and then through the fuel pump ground wire. So if your fuel pump works, then the ground should be at least partially ok. You could check continuity from the ground pin the a good ground and make sure the resistance is below an ohm or so. Besides that either your float is stuck or worn, or there is a bad connection somewhere between the gauge cluster and the fuel pump. If you are careful and find out which pin is the hot 12v pin, you can take a paperclip or something and jump the OTHER 2 wires as they should be fuel gauge and ground. That should make your gauge drop all the way to zero. If it doesn't then there is a bad connection in the harness.

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    8 жыл бұрын

    Don't really think it would work. The float is connected to the ground pin and gauge pin at the connector. either the float is bad, or the gauge is bad, or there isn't a good connection from the gauge, through the float, to ground

By adjusting the tps from either connector, wouldn't that throw each reading off since you can only adjust it at one point on the tb? This the only issue I haven't figured out on the renix

    Right, both sides should equal each other on a good sensor. Adjust the flat plug for idle or square plug for shift points. TPS is very sensitive to water so if you've got hood vents or something then try to cover it with something

    So do you have to plug your the flat three pin connector if you have a auto? I set the tps using the diagram and it runs fine. I haven’t driven it. I saw that yours was in your video. If I plug the flat pin connector in it idles up high in idle to 1200. Unplug it and use the square pin auto and it idles fine. I was getting a reading from the new tps at 4.67volts multipled that by .83 and it was 3.67 I left it there just using the four pin auto connection. My question is can I run it down the road just as is?

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    6 жыл бұрын

    Alright, so quick breakdown here. The 3 Pin Flat Plug is what the ECU uses to run the engine. The 4 Pin Square Plug is what the TCU uses to shift. They are physically different circuits in the TPS so it's possible for one side to go out while the other still works fine. The ECU side should be around 17% and the TCU should be around 83%. If the engine seems to work well enough for you then go for it, but the engine will have to try and guess how much throttle you are giving so it may not run all that great. Better to just get a new TPS if it's not working properly.

    Considering it already looks to be epoxy filled, I don't trust water anywhere near it. The more protected the better, and that can has been doing pretty damn good for what it's worth haha

    can anything stop the injecter from getting derect pulse to rev the inging?

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the ECU will only fire the Injectors if it gives the ok to start. Holding the throttle Wide Open will prevent Injector firing during startup, as will a Bad CPS since it doesn't know how fast the engine is spinning.

    There are 2 sets of wires, 3 for the Engine computer and 3 for the Transmission computer. ECU is the 3 pin flat plug: A = Light Blue B = Brown C = Yellow/Green _|--|_ (A)(B)(C) TCU is the 4 pin square plug: A = Red B = Gray C = X D = Orange _|--|_ [B][A] [C][D]

    hey i am still in renix hell. cant get it to idle. new tps and now new iac, and the idle went even higher. i am torn between LS engine swap and setting this damn jeep on fire. any thoughts on where to look here?

    lol. What kind of idle? does it hunt really bad or is it just really high. Usually vacuum leaks are the first thing i look for when looking for idle issues.

    well i have an update on my awful idle issues.all of the nuts on the bottom of the intake were about 3 to 4 full turns loose. i think all i need to do now is set the TPS and clean up my wiring and make it look neat and clean. then try and pass our emissions tests here in Colorado. and for your commenters.....i tried carb cleaner/brake cleaner/throttle body cleaner at least 3 times on top and under the manifold. so if anyone gets a 4.0 that has high idle that wont respond to anything, change out the intake/exhaust manifold gaskets.

    Yeah, intake leaks like those are also real common on a fresh install job too. That'll give you a really high idle.

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    I'm assuming you mean you aren't getting any spark from the distributor? First thing I always check is the CPS, without a good signal the ECU won't send any spark or fuel.

  • @mitchellwatson9344

    @mitchellwatson9344

    i was getting spark because the engine start and the wires that goes to the distributor was not connected what made that happened

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    6 жыл бұрын

    Oh, you mean the distributor sensor wasn't plugged in but it still starts. That's normal, on Renix the Distributor Sync Signal only tells the ECU if Cylinder 1 or Cylinder 6 is about to fire, which helps it start. When that is unplugged the ECU will just guess which could take longer to start

  • @mitchellwatson9344

    I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, like engine RPM Speed or fastest wheel speed the vehicle can go? The Rev limit of the 4.0L is 5,000 RPM. Fastest a stock Jeep can go is maybe 110 MPH if everything is perfect and you're going down hill haha.

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    Could be lots of things, but generally it would be some sort of timing issue, whether mechanical or electrical. Is the MAP sensor hooked up properly? Did you do anything to the engine or did you just put it in as is. Did it run properly in the donor vehicle?

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    CPS is the number one cause of no starts on these old Jeeps and would prevent Spark and Fuel if no signal was detected. You can test them quickly before swapping it, multimeter set to ohm mode, CPS should be 125 Ω, +- 75 ohms. For a more reliable test, CPS should show 0.3V AC while cranking.

  • @mitchellwatson9344
