RETAIL :
"Mykonos" is one of the best known and popular Cycladic islands
It is particularly famous for its gay tourism since the 1970s (but I don't know why)
Its official permanent population is about 10,000 inhabitants and in summer it sees nearly a million tourists! It is enormous !
Locals say that on this island there is a church for every day of the year.
"Chora" is its main town, it is also called "Hora" or simply "Mykonos"
Half of the inhabitants of the island live here.
The maze of streets was designed to shelter from the wind and to outrun pirates
There is a small fishing port, 2 small beaches, 1 million bars, restaurants, shops and vehicle rentals which make it a temple of excessive consumption!
The only supermarket in town is on the heights, so can be accessed by pedestrians, to the delight of restaurants and bars! (it is shameful)
I advise you to visit the city as soon as the sun rises to appreciate its charm because, yes, it is a beautiful city but polluted by this million tourists who wander from 8am!
Unfortunately you will only see "Alefkandra" from very far away, which is also called "Little Venice" because the bars have monopolized the area.
That's a shame !
You can also go see the 6 mills which are on a small high plain ("Katomili")
In "Mykonos" the wind blows 365 days a year, it is for this reason that here in the 18th century there were 18 mills used to grind wheat from all over the Mediterranean
There are only 5 left today (5 are authentic and the 6th has been rebuilt) and they have become, in a way, the emblems of the island.
I advise you to go up to the "Boni" mill, a mill in perfect condition serving as a dovecote
The sunset is spectacular from here
There is not much to do on the island apart from going to the beach (there are more than 70)
The only small hike that exists is to leave from "Ano Mera" and reach the beach "Lía" (Liasti) on foot, in about 1h30 walk
And then go to the beach of "Klafati" (1 hour of additional walk) to pick up the return bus.
My opinion :
I simply hated "Mykonos" I don't understand what is the point of enduring so many car noises, horns and music day and night
To be crowded in the streets like in a metro at rush hour, and to pay for everything 3 times the price of their value.
While there are a lot of other islands in the Cyclades which are ten times more beautiful and above all more peaceful
