I watch both of your KZread channels and just found this one today love it. I just started wood carving very very recently and your videos are such a help. Speaking about what people are willing to pay for hand carved wood ornaments in my area I live in Missouri people pay 40 to 50 dollars or more and are happy to do so. I have been a collector for many years of wood carvings just recently decided to try carving myself but will definitely not stop collecting.

I just got done carving another little man following Doug's 1x1 series, which is such a mentally involved carve and paint for me since it's so small and detailed. So I was thinking about doing another one of those Moravian Stars as a project I can turn my brain off to which could also be a great christmas ornament!

I really do enjoy the easy listen of you guys. I’m not a nativity guy, but I think I’d enjoy a condensed version because I admire Doug’s whimsical take on things. Wouldn’t have to do all the pieces.

Yes, I am just learning how to carve small pieces with a knife only. I, too, would enjoy watching how to carve a respectful but faceted nativity scene. But only because I do not have the skill or artistic imagination to do such an endeavor. I'm a computer and electronics hardware person, not an artist. I can copy movements of my carving knife in the wood I see in the videos, but I can't see the finished piece in a plane block of wood and know what to remove. But, if Doug or someone else doesn't want to make such a video, I respect that as well. I do enjoy the videos and the teaching they do share with me.

I think there is DEFINITELY enough interest in nativity scenes, if you have the patience. You could do the manager, one standing wise man, and a kneeling Mary and Joseph. Something like that, probably just four videos. Not 20 people know I even whittle and a quarter of them have asked for a nativity scene.

The torch Doug is thinking of is a tiger torch, perhaps?

Doug, through the magic of digital wizardry, could you call the older video's up by number or subject? When a watcher asks about painting or tool, you could say, video 342 or whatever. Just a thought. Feeble help mabey. Merry Xmas to you and Alec.

So you dip your swiss made tool handles in linseed oil ? I'm thinking I should as well, I have two OCCT gouges and the handles have become quite stained and ugly.

Great episode guys. As far as charging for work. I will do for free when a person is in need and it makes their life livable. I will help them do a brake job on their truck for a little bit of food and their company as a friends or family. But, if I am a person who does brake jobs as a living, and a friend or family member comes in asking for me to do the labor and they provide the brake parts, and they want my labor to be done for free, absolutely no! It seems to say that they do not value me as a laborer or worker. I wouldn't expect them to do their work for free. No. I might give them a discount of 10% or something, same as my employee discount, but labor is not free. Skill and knowledge to do a thing is not worthless. It has worth. Skill and knowledge has value. It should be paid for. Again, as you all said, I might be thinking of a small child or a family in NEED of something and can't pay for it, then I might help them for free. But to expect me to do something at cost just because we are related or good friends, to me, is disrespectful to me and my trade and or skill. Otherwise, they should do it for themselves! I might teach you how to do the thing, and I might make money from your work as I teach you what I know. Like all the trades. You learn a skill and the teacher benefits from your work, and so does the student. Still, the transfer of knowledge is a fair trade. At least that's what I think is fair. I'm 64 years old. That's what I think.
