It is so cool to see our "good old" Nelson back, with a smile, with his puzzles and his enthusiasm. 🎉
Nice to see that you are ok!
Nearly a century later, this still is considered one of the greatest endgame studies.
I absolutely love this channel - Nelson's explanations are brilliant!
Wow crazy position!! Would love to see more drawing puzzles!
It feels like they started from the end position and worked backwards.
It’s awesome to see that you seem to be doing better!
Ever branch of this puzzle had such a cool stalemate
I'll be sure to remember these tactics the next time I get 3 Knights!

That was a great one Nelson!!
Very nice ! Not too difficult to find overboard, since many non-losing moves are the only ones, but how was hard to put together this puzzle !
At 7:55, black could also get a bishop without a stalemate. If he could then trade one of the knights, he could win.

Multiple awesome stalemate threats all in one game, ending with a picturesque stalemate finale. Cool puzzle.
Fascinating! Thanks.
old spice for an old puzzle
Good idea with the whistling and extra info!
the length of this video plus the old spice whistle has made my day.
So glad I found your videos.
Great Job!

Excellent video....
Can you do common sacrifices? There is a lot of versions of h6 sacrifice. It would be useful if you do it.
My friends from the bar and the library are gonna love this
Nothing like a cup of coffee and a brain melt to start the day 😁👍🏼☕️"if you cant win don't lose" ....:somebody 🤣
9:04 Now I see why it is called a fork
Wow, what an ingenious puzzle! It reminds us of just how mind-boggling chess can really be, even in the end game!
Make the whistle a jingle. I need a new message-sound ^^ Nice puzzle btw
That was a great one! 😄
"And you're TRIPLE FORKING THE KNIGHTS!" - never thought I would ever hear that phrase in my life
Hey Nelson get well soon. We know that the bot Martin never misses mate in one. So, give him the HARDEST mate in one puzzles. Let's see if he could solve it? and check his intelligence 😅 in your next video.

כל הכבוד אחרי הקריש דם לחזור לחידות מדהימות מאוד נהניתי!!
ok that old spice whistle was sick
Great study and great video! However, I wonder what happens if black promotes to Bishop rather than Knight in some of the lines?
As i have commented many times before about good chess players not making futile moves. Good players won't waste time and effort chasing the king around with their knights, knowing full well they cannot win.
The old spice whistle made subscribing mandatory.
Maybe 10-15 seconds to get the idea and correct first move/approach. Lots of depth to the analysis... so this one is a gem! @8:13 - I think it's worth commenting that underpromotion to a Bishop is a viable idea but it fails ALSO to the Knight fork. But 2 knights and a bishop vs a knight would be ok if you can trade off knights. Stay sharp and be aware of these opportunities!
That final position is instant zen mode.
@2:14 There is a third way to check the white king - promote the pawn to a third knight. Can 3 knights checkmate?
@andrewroff5387
9 ай бұрын
If the pawn promotes to a knight. The king can take the other knight on f1. 3 knights is forced mate. It is possible to mate with 2 knights but it is not forced.

What if just after the first move of white Ng1 black plays pawn and promots it to knight giving check

I wondered about this, too. But White just takes the knight on f1, and it's a draw.
5:58 The triple knight stale mate trap. Ah yes, seen so, so many times 😕 😀
How are you sir I hope you are getting better
Should I move around or just get the blood clot? . . . . . . And the answer is knight to f3 anyway!
9:10 The best stalemate I've ever seen)
At 3:48 black could promote to a knight and save the game
The difference between you and the other KZreadrs is that you see the beauty and show us the beauty. Yes of course you want to win, but most videos are only about winning, not about elegance.
so how would you get a third knight on a physical board, when there isn't an extra piece? What do you do?
@howtoappearincompletely9739

Invert a rook.
@christopherheckman7957
9 ай бұрын
Two pawns on the same square also works.
(@3:05) - Okay, but maybe black can win from this position after 1 … Kxe1, as white only has one legal move, 2 Kg1. One of the problems with trying to force mate with only two knights is getting the enemy king in the corner. But after 2 … Ke2 (a waiting move), white must now 3 Kh1 and the king is in the corner. So how would black force mate with two knights when the king IS in the corner?
@vipperson4938
9 ай бұрын
The problem is that black can’t actually mate without moving the king closer, so after Kh1, if Kf2 it’s a stalemate, and if either knight moves the king can escape. The reason you cannot checkmate with 2 knights is because there is a turn where the king has no legal moves, so there must be a pawn that has a legal move to allow checkmate. A king being in the corner just isn’t enough to force a checkmate 🤓
@Lovuschka
9 ай бұрын
@@vipperson4938 Correct, the only way to checkmate is to give a check to for example h2 and after that checkmate on h1. This by parity logic means that White always can just go to h3 instead of h1, avoiding the checkmate, as the knight can't cover h3 from a square where it can move to g3 or f2 also, as they are on different square colors.
@stevenrix7024
9 ай бұрын
That’s the problem: there are checkmates with the two knights but they are never forced. For example, a checked king on h2 could go to h1 and walk into a checkmate in one, but it could also go to h3. Maybe think about it this way: if one knight is checking the Kh2 and the other knight is covering h3 to stop the king escaping, then what’s the next check after …Kh1? Can’t be from the knight covering h3, as h1 is the same colour as h3 so if that knight moves then it’s not covering any square of that colour. Then if the knight that was covering h2 (from f1, maybe) moves (Ng3+) then …Kh2 as the knight stopped covering that square. So if White has only two knights and plays Nf1+ hoping for mate in 1 after …Kh1, there can’t be anything stopping …Kh3. If you have Kf2 and Ng5 trapping the Black king on h1 and h2, then two more knights can force a checkmate.

What happens if you promote to a bishop? Is there a way to force a trade of knights, leaving black with knight + bishop?
@sigmaoctantis5083
8 ай бұрын
No, because any promotion to something other than a knight fails to the fork Nf3+: the new piece gets traded off immediately, leaving Black with the powerless pair of knights.
I Personally, think that if you can Force a stalemate that should be considered a win

8:08 what if the black king moves to d1, breaking a possible fork later? Two knights can't normally chase a king down, but the white king is already sewed up in a corner.
@FP-ih1lu

I think white takes the pawn and the king has time to weasel out of the corner
8:29 black can win by moving his knight from f4 to h3. Then white either takes the black's knight or moves his king. If white moves his king, we take white's knight or if white kills black's knight, either way black gets a queen in a way white can't fork black's king and queen. Black wins afterward.

How about an under promotion to a bishop instead of a knight? Rook and Queen are ruled out due to stalemate, but wouldn't bishop be an option? Edit: Knight fork will pick up the bishop as well, similar to queen promotion. So that is not going to work either.
What would have happened if black had promoted to a knight instead of a queen at the start?
