85mm vs 35mm - What's The Difference? | Tutorial Tuesday

We're looking at two classic prime lens focal lengths, the 85mm lens and the 35mm lens. Both great options for a variety of things but what really is the difference and what can you do with each one? Well, we're talking about the feel of the lenses, the kind of images they help you create and the stories they can tell. It's Tutorial Tuesday!

I think you are correct but you are shorting the 35mm. It's actually a great waist up, and even tighter, portrait lens. Distortion is minimal to non existent depending on your distance. I love my Sigma 35 f1.4 but I often shoot my Nikon 24-70 or 24-105 at 35mm.

85 + 35 low F stop is a lot of prime in the bag. I think this video makes a good case for the 50mm. Fantastic lighting in the body shot. Congrats on the effort.

Quick query. Were the lenses used on crop sensor or full frame? I always get confused if the actual mm focal length is standard whether it fits a cropped camera or full frame or not. I've an EFS 18mm zoom lens - is that cropped 18mm or full frame 18mm?

lens mm is always full frame, so for crop sensors apply the crop factor to the 18mm, so on a 1.6 crop camera, it would have the equivalent field of view of 28.8mm , but, the same depth of focus as 18mm full frame. hope that helps :)

then a 50mm would be something in the middle, a bit of both😎. I have all three of them, i.e. the Sigma 35mm f1.4, the sigma 85mm f1.4 and a Sony 50mm f1.4

I'm in a bit of a conundrum. A year ago, I sold my Nikon DSLR gear and bought a Sony a7IV with a 50mm GM f/1.4. Love the 50mm, but there are situations where I'd like to fit in more stuff in tighter spaces (hello 35mm) and times when I'd want more compression (hello 85mm). I could sell my 50mm and get a 35 and 85 or I could get a 24-70 (sigma is coming out with a updated (and hopefully lighter) 24-70). I'd miss the f/1.4ness of a prime, but I'd gain the convenience of not needing to switch lenses. Any advice?

    That'll be about a 50mm difference.
