Neither. It's 40mm!

This side of the street: 35mm. Other side of the street: 50mm.

I was in Venice for a week (on business), but had enough time to visit a few museums and other sights. I only had a 50mm with me - in an emergency I could have covered other focal lengths with my smartphone or via stitching. I was very happy with the options and really didn't miss any other lens, although the Sigma 50mm 1.2 DG DN Art I used is really an incredibly good lens.

50 for me. It has the right amount of background compression and the face is not as distorted as with the 35mm. Plus bokeh at 35 is good but 50mm bokeh is better in my eyes. Bought the Samyang 50mm 1.4 II at a good price. Not the fastest AF but managable. And great price. My most used lens.

Way back in the 70s, I had a variety of wide angle and normal lenses. I had the screw mount Pentas Spotmatic F with a 50mm, 35mm and a 135 telephoto. This was when I was in the Philippines, stationed at Clark Air Base. Had lots of fun and got lots of great pictures. I used a particular lens for what I was shooting, mixing it up as I went taking photos. Imagine if we had good wide-angle to slight telephoto lenses back then. I liked the Pentax lenses for their sharpness and compactness, but those issues were rarely on my mind. Had to get that photo was my mission.

35 has always been my favorite. Especially with modern camera pixel count, you can also crop but you cannot digitally widen 50mm. I like to go a bit closer and include more surrounding which is why I like 35 more. In low light 35 is a bit easier to hold for the shutter time needed. Especially with film where you cannot bump up the ISO that can be a benefit. I used to do "single prime for 2 weeks" walks. In short time I got used to either one.

My first prime was a 50mm I absolutely love it, however, once I got my 35mm I take way more shots with it now than the 50mm, so probably I'd stick with the 35mm if I had to choose

I always preferred 35mm over 50mm as like you enjoy the wider field of view when up close. More recently i'm finding a 40mm the ideal single lens to carry while not as good as 35mm or 50mm it's the best compromise when you want to travel light and tends to often come in the pancake form factor. Great to see you out with Robin again.

Very nicely done, Matti. Love and have both 35 and 50 but also 27. I don't go out with them all, though. I usually use only 1, and keep it on the camera for a week or more to learn and fully experience the focal length.

I'm glad that you mentioned the 40mm as a punchline by the end of your clip. I own several 50s and 35s, got myself the Sony 40/2.5 thanks to your recommendation and not only do I consider it as a compromise between the wider and the narrower option. After using it for a couple of days now I've come to the conclusion that the 40mm speaks its own visual language. It holds its own territory, a bit like the 28 next to the 24 and the 35. The images seem more balanced, if that makes sense, and while you can include plenty of context next to your main subject, you don't have to worry as much about filling the frame as with a 35.

This is why the best street photography lens is 40mm, right in between, and combining the advantages of both 35mm and 50mm. ;-) But seriously, I wish that every camera system had a good compact 40mm prime lens. Nikon's and Sony's 40mm primes are excellent, Canon used to have an excellent 40mm/2.8 for EF (which is no longer available and hasn't been replaced with a comparable R-Mount lens). Fuji's 40mm-equivalent 27mm/2.8 is great except for its AF motor. For Fuji, Sony and Nikon APS-C mirrorless cameras, the new TTArtisan 27mm/2.8 is a great alternative. Panasonic's (40mm-equivalent) 20mm/1.7 for MFT is old but still good. And the Ricoh GRIIIx even has a fixed 40mm-equivalent prime lens. Only L-Mount sorely lacks a compact street photography 40mm AF lens - Sigma's 40mm/1.4 is too big and heavy.

No compromise. They both have their situational benefits. I carry a 24mm and 50mm with my full frame camera that has apsc mode so I essentially always have 24, 35, 50 and 75mm with me

@limitlesscapture I agree with you and Quah 5:35 100%. This exactly my set up. 24mm gets you 35mm, and 50mm gets you 75mm with the APSC punch in mode. This is my reasoning as to why I too do not own a 35mm.

It has to be 50mm for me because I also use 90 and 150mm a lot. I am just fond of details and compression.

Presently, I use Olympus 25mm f/1.8 paired with the GX85 which is versatile and small enough to fit into my jacket pocket and/or carry around generally. I am evaluating the Olympus 17mm f/1.8.

Hey Matti Happy New Year!. I have both and my favorite is 35mm and when I want to focus more in the subject without caring about the environment I use 50mm. I also have tried 28mm and 40mm. I choose 35 over 28 because if offers a shallower dof and regarding to 40 I wasn't sure how to use it because I was already used to 35 and 50.

After quite a while of exhaustively investigating the perfect focal length for me, I found there is only one answer: go out and do the photography you want and see if you need narrower or wider. Even better, have a zoom lens fixed at a certain focal length for the day and see how it goes. It is great to get an initial idea of the focal length before you get something, like watching a video like this as guidance, but the only way in the end is to try it yourself and see - you might be surprised at your findings. I was sure 35mm would be the best for me until I got one and found it is simply too wide for the environments I find myself in - it pulled in too much clutter. Then I tried a 50mm and found it so hit that sweet spot where I can take 90% of my photos without it pulling in too much clutter or being too narrow. Each focal length also has a certain feel to it i.e. it's perspective. To me 50mm feels a tad more distant, formal and perhaps stricter where 35mm feels more involved, casual, informal

I bounce back and forth between 35 and 50 but generally prefer the 35 if I had to choose. My travel kit is usually 21, 35, 75 or 24, 35, 85 depending on which camera I’m taking. I’ve been curious about 40mm and bought one recently, maybe I’ll be a convert! Enjoy your channel!

35 mm is more versatile for me [or slightly wider 30 mm actually - P/L 15/1,7 could be my only lens ❤- I somehow tend to prefer it even to Oly 17/1.2 ] . I find 50 mm more challenging for everyday photography; on the other hand I quite like it for portraits [P/L 25/1.4 II 👍].

Whatever you have on your camera. I like my GR3x, but when I have a different camera with a zoom, I seem to use wider settings.

My favourite lens is my Sigma 30mm (APSC) f/1.4 DC DM for my Sony a6000. It is 45mm in Full Frame equivalent, which is smack right in between 35mm and 50mm. My number two lens is the Sigma 16mm (24mm equivalent) which I consider my storytelling lens. Although it is much bigger and heavier than the Sigma 30mm, which is the most compact of the Sigma f/1.4 DC DM series. These are my 2 lens solution.

I like the versatility of 35mm as it is great for videography as well. I find 50mm a bit too narrow for street photography - sometimes we don't have enough room to step back to frame the shot.

50mm was my first lens for street photography, and i still use it. But i used alot of 35mm on M leica too. M leica handles really well with 35mm and rangefinder has some things i like for street photography thst I like. Its just now way too expencive. Before they were more affordable 😅🤔. Especially seeing outside framelines. And that everything is sharp. So i was taking more care about background too.

I’ll probably be the outlier here. I contend that the *perfect* pair is 28 and 40 equivalent. Remember the advice “If your photos aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough”? I’ve used both 35mm and 50mm for street, and both can be appropriate. But ultimately the 50 kept me too far away for most shots, and 35 wasn’t quite wide enough to get me closer while still showing the environment I wanted to include. 40mm is actually how we see without a lot of peripheral vision and I think 28 is closer to how we see when we unconsciously scan the wider environment. Fight me! LOL

I love my Voigtlander Vito B with 50mm and my Leica Q2 28mm.

I am now quite interested in macro photography, so I will always try to keep a macro lens with me, now I am trying Laowa 85/5.6, but since Lumix have a new 100/2.8 that is only 300g, I am consider to preorder it, as the larger aperture and autofocus can be useful to give me a lightweight telephoto lens (if later Lumix have some high res camera, then I can crop it to get a decent 150mm focal length perspective). Adding up that I would like to travel light, that gives me a hard choice of my second lens: in theory 35mm is a more versatile lens, you can use it to shoot environment, on gimbal, Vlog, if you crop the full frame, you get 50mm easily, but to my true emotion, I am really leaning towards to 50mm. Every time I pick the 35mm, I feel it is a bit boring, as my normal energy goes a bit narrow and like the clean looking, and when I rarely goes wild, especially in the narrow and a bit messy city type like Hong Kong (Guangzhou to be exact), my energy goes exactly to 28mm, which is similar to modern 24mm. So in either energy 35mm won't fit even though I thought 35mm is the perfect all in one, what a pity.

The best focal length for street photography is a trick question. Almost any focal length can produce awesome street photographs. However 35mm is the best choice for an every day carry camera. Anything longer, even 40mm, takes too much work to get good environment portraits in every day life. With longer focal lengths, a photographer has to leave the table to frame a decent a portrait of a dinning partner at a restaurant. Likewise if walking in a group, a photographer would have to distance herself from the group to frame a shot, then run to rejoin them.

I have both 35mm and 50mm. When it comes to street photography, i have felt that sometimes 50mm is too narrow and other times 35mm is bit too wide and lack that shallow DOF. After going through several hundreds of photos in flickr taken with a 40mm , i felt the pics produced by 40mm has a certain soothing effect. Whether it's street photography or landscape or anything else.I don't know how to put it in words. There is something special about it. Since I don't own a 40mm , i tried 40mm set on my zoom lens & i loved it. I'm mostly likey to purchase a Nikon Z 40mm as i personally feel it's the sweet spot when it comes to street photography, documentary and even an EDC walk around one. So, i totally agree with your opinion. Happy New Year.

35mm allows you to be close to subject, like a typical communication distances. 2-3m. 50mm you often need to be further. Like 4 or 5m.. I dont ever crop my street photography. I use my feets to crop. 35mm need to be much closer which is easy in busy city. But more difficult to get candid pictures if theres just few people.

My comfort zone is in the 35-40mm range. Even with a 28-60mm zoom, I rarely use the 50mm focal legth.

I may get a 35 for my full frame and shot on crop for the nifty fifty look if needed. Best of both worlds ;)

I think for fun carry around, or vacation, I'd go with a Canon RP and the new Canon 50mm RF 1.8 lens, $139 from Canon refurbished. Cheap mirrorless combo lighter than Olympus OM-1.

Hi Matti, I love 50mm - that's what I learned photography with; and I normally pair it with a 28mm. But if I had to go with one lens only, it would be 40mm.

In film days, most of my shooting was with a 50mm, and my first digital prime was a 50. When I started shooting M43 about 10 years ago, I started using a 35mm equivalent and then a 40mm equivalent. Since then, the 40 has become my favorite focal length for walkaround shooting. I almost never use a 50 equivalent for digital anymore, but still use a 50 for film. Guess I'm quirky.

I’m quite partial to 40mm or 20mm on M4/3. Recently bought an OM 20mm f1.7 and I like it very much, I use a 35mm on my Sony plus an 85mm and I have a Leica Q2 which is 28mm [looks more like 24mm to me]. I am not too keen on 28mm and would prefer the Q2 to be 35mm but the standard lens has a high enough resolution to crop to 35mm or 50mm field of view, which are standard camera functions on Q2

When doing Street photography i do prefer the 35mm lens, i find that i do get more keepers with my 35mm than my 50mm nifty 50. It was interesting to see the photographers you asked what lens they used, isn't it great that we all have our favourite lens. Nice video Matti, thank you. 😊

Since you're a GR3 and GR3X fan, I must ask how much of a difference in focal ranges do you think is enough to justify spending money on another lens or camera? Under what circumstances would you buy a 50mm if you already had a Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8? Thank you and Happy New Year!

I don't think it's that simple. There are many other things to consider than only the focal length. For example, weight, size, features, max aperture etc. I might even want to buy two 50mm lenses. Then there is the money issue, some have more to spend than others and they can buy whatever they want without any excuses.

I'm in MFT system and I use 15mm and 25mm (30mm and 50mm equ). I like the 50 for its discretion in street, for its compression, and find it more adapted for portrait. But in some context it's too narrow so i'll use the 30 for more context.

Back in the 1960s, my first 35mm film camera came with a 50mm lens. For some reason, the 50mm normal lens on my 35mm SLR did not work well for me. Over the decades, I tried 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55mm lenses for one-lens/one-body street shooting. They all worked, but for me, 35mm was my first choice, 40mm was second, 45 and 50 were tied for third. My favorite Nikon SLR two-lens street combo is: 35mm f/1.4 85mm f/1.4 My favorite Leica rangefinder two-lens street combo is: 35mm f/1.4 90mm f/2 My favorite Fuji mirrorless APS-C digital two-lens street combo is: 23mm f/1.4 56mm f/1.2

I go back and forth, but I think if I had to have only one, it would be 35mm, but I often find it easier to move closer than to move back. That said, I have the Lumix/Leica 10-25/1.7, so I'm covered for the wide - normal range.

35 or 50mm? Hmm. It depends. Generally I prefer a 50mm as I find it better for taking pictures of people and things, but If one prefers pictures of places I think a 35mm is better. When travelling I take both and find I use 50mm a lot more than 35mm. Personally though, if I had to settle for just one I would pick neither. A 40-45mm every time for me. Beware though. I have been caught out when travelling and picking just one lens. A trip to Marrakesh a few years ago with just a 50mm was a photographic nightmare as it was way too short for some of the wide open streets and main square, and way too long for use in the alleys of the Medina. If you know the topography of where you are going, choose a focal length which suits.

Oh man, I started with a 40 mm Ricoh GRX and still find it to be very comfortable to use. Lately, just because of having a better 50 mm GM 1.4 I've gotten used to it. But TBH my best street pics here in Helsinki have been with a Sony 135 GM. Maybe getting that up close and personal doesn't work here as well. I'm a bit envious of the interactions you manage, that's a big part of the fun too, isn't it?

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, people in South East Asia are very easy to photograph but I think you can work with a 40mm everywhere as long as you know your location.

I don't know how often I have heard that a wider lens would be more "immersive" because it brings you into the scene while a longer lens creates a distance to the scene. Actually it is the other way around: A wider lens pushes everything away from you. A longer lens gets everything closer. Elementary. Just look at some pictures taken from the same standpoint of a scene.

35mm because it brings more into the image and overall story behind the picture. Plus indoors, no question, the 35mm all day. If you prefer subject isolation, then 50.. but in my experience after shooting with 50 for so long, it became boring to me to isolate a subject especially if you want to add emotion or story and purpose to the photo.

I prefer 35mm for street. 35mm feels just right to me for what I saw. Although, I find 50mm feel just right to me for environmental portrait.

I have a 24mm Nikkor, however does it make as equivalent to a 35mm with the crop format camera, considering the distortion of a 24mm is more than a 35mm? Furthermore the background would look further away with the 24mm as compared to a 35mm lenses.

Looks like you’re using your 6700. I’ll have to check on Siriu lenses too. The viltrox 23mm, 33mm are interesting too. If I’m on the sidewalk with my subject I prefer 35mm. 50 can me a little too tight

A 50mm was my first lens, but I moved away from it over the years, preferring to alternate between wide-angle and telephoto. However, I recently bought one with the hope of reviving that old 47° perspective in my photography.

It depends on what and how you shoot on the streets. HCB preferred 50mm and his pictures are legendary. I prefer 35mm simply because I like to document the context. Both work.

I use a 34mm (17mm f1.8 Olympus)lens but I concider to buy me a used 50mm (25mm f1.4 summilux pana-leica mft) lens. I am a little more closer to the subject, good for portrait, it is really an allrounder lens and not very expensive.

I'm a one on the camera, one in the bag guy. If it's about 'the subject', it's the 50,. If it's 'the scene', it's the 28. I should try a 40. Maybe then I'm a just one on the camera guy...

@@mattisulanto It's a method that makes me think what is the shot 'about'? I use the 50 more, there's something that attracts me. And yeah, there's a 40 that's making me come over all GAS and "Ooh, that might be nice" :) I shoot MFT, the Oly 20/1.4.

I've come up with a set of mathematical equations that show 43mm to be the optimum focal length. Now I need to convince lens makers. In all seriousness, if I had to go with one, I would choose 50mm because the perspective appears more natural to my eyes.

A normal or standard focal length is defined as the diagonal of the image formed in the camera. The diagonal of the 24x36mm image is 43mm.

I think it comes down to what you're trying to do… a 50 isolates your subject where a 35 starts to tell you more about the whole scene… I’m pretty thankful for my Panasonic 12-35 / 2.8… I don’t have to pick one or the other… ;)

35 is better than 50 for me, 40 is really nice too but I have just started to fall in love with the 28mm....

My favorit is the 40mm, and I rate the 50 over the 35. When I like it a little more wide I prefer the 28mm over the 35.

This question is also a function of sensor size. A 50mm on full frame is like a 35mm on APS-c. So if you like a 50mm on APS-c, it would be a 35mm on APS-c that you would choose. If you like a 28mm on FF, the a 40mm on APS-c. Personally, for walking around, I like a short f2.8 zoom of 28-75mm on Canon full frame or my 24-70mm on Nikon. It's still light, but very flexible. If I have to choose a single fixed prime and I can't carry anything else, I would use my FF 40mm f2.8 for Canon which is a compromise. So small it looks like a lens cap, I won't have to step back as far as if I were using a 50mm in close quarters.

I am new to street photography genre. Can't street photography be done with a zoom lens, so you can use whatever focal length is required depending on a situation? I see everyone is using or discussing about a prime lens and got curious.

Of course, you can use a zoom as well. You have probably seen videos explaining the differences between a prime and a zoom.

For street photography, I like to use the Canon PowerShot G15 compact digital camera with its built-in 28-140mm f/1.8 to f/2.8 equivalent zoom lens. I also like to use the inexpensive Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5 to 5.6 G auto focus vibration-reduction zoom lens on a nikon full-frame dSLR body for street photography.

When we talk about focal lengths, it only makes sense if we mention the sensor format at the same time. The question "50 mm or 35 mm?" is otherwise pretty pointless without reference to the sensor format. 50 mm on an Olympus (mft) is already a pretty long focal length. And 35 mm on a full-frame camera (approx. 24 x 36 mm) is pretty wide! It is worth mentioning that mft photographers finally also have decent super wide angles and for them both the 35 mm lens and the 50 mm lens (equivalent 70 or 100 mm) are too long as "preferred normal lenses".

The age old debate, 35mm or 50mm for Street. I own multiple copies of both yet over 50% of my street photos are taken with a 40mm. But aside from that, 50mm helps me fill the frame without much cropping in post. My travel kit is 24mm, 50mm, 90mm. And a 40mm on my GR3x.

I use a 31mm and à 43mm.

40mm is perfect!

I'm steadfast on 28mm for general use & replacing 50mm with 40mm for standard Lens. Sigmas 28mm & especially 40mm are spectacular. *Sigma Art 40mm is large & heavy but image quality one of best in World. I've had 28mm, 40mm, 50mm Art = all F1.4. Also 24-105mm - F4 very nice. If Sigma made a 28-40 Zoom, It would sell day one.

Hi, first I will say that today price difference between a 35mm and 50mm Lens is minimal, fx Sony 35mm 1.4 GM $1400 USD, Sony 50mm 1.4 GM $1300 USD, so that is no excuse to buy a 50mm ! For me the "best" allround Lens for street/urban is the 35mm Lens, but I use often many different focal prime Lens from 14mm to 135mm. I never use fx 28 and 50mm focal length, those two focal length to me is too often either too short or too long, I do not like them, so any focal length shorter or longer than 28mm and 50mm. My Lenses of choice is 14, 21, 24, 35, 55, 65, 85, 110 and 135mm. Most often I use two Cameras today with a wide angle Lens on one Camera and a short tele Lens on the other Camera, with one Camera and Lens only I choose a wide angle or a short tele Lens 55, 65 or 85.

Yeah, in that specific example the price difference is not huge. However, once you explore some more options you'll soon discover how many affordable 50mm options there are compared to 35mm options.

@@mattisulanto I think we need to compare Lenses in the same quality when we talk about prices. 35mm Lenses in "alright" quality starts from $200, I do not think 35mm Lenses are expensive today, but I do think 50mm Lenses today are much more expensive than they have ever been. In 1982 a Canon 35mm 2.8 was $176, a Canon FDn 35mm 2.0 was $367, a Canon FDn 50mm 1.8 was $147, a Canon FDn 50mm 1.4 was $268. The 50mm got hyped when it was used for the APSC cameras (before full frame digital cameras came) because the 75/80mm equivalent focal Lens was fine for portraits, so since then prices of 50mm Lenses has raised...

You should know I would not do that😀Just saying that in my opinion there are more and affordable 50mm options than 35mm options. However, if I don't want to argue and you probably have counted how many of each focal length are available and for what kind of price. So, I'm going to say that you are absolutely right and I'm absolutely wrong here😀
