8550U vs 7700HQ - Laptop CPU Comparison and Benchmarks

Ғылым және технология

Intel recently released their 8th generation of mobile Kaby Lake R CPUs, in this video I want to compare the features and performance differences between the newer 8550U and 7700HQ laptop chips with a series of benchmarks to find out which you should consider in your new laptop, or if it’s worth upgrading to.
Benchmarks I’ve tested include:
Adobe Premiere
Cinebench
7-Zip (compression/decompression)
VeraCrypt (AES encryption/decryption)
Handbrake (transcode 4K to 1080p, and 1080p to 720p)
PCMark10
Passmark9
Geekbench4
Corona 1.3
Dota 2
Gaming tests were limited, as we’re only testing built in graphics.
Check pricing and reviews of other laptops with these CPUs:

8550U: amzn.to/2H2VfAv
I've also compared the 8550U with the 6700HQ here: • 8550U vs 6700HQ - Lapt...

    Try Eurocom Chances are, they have more than one laptop with both a U series and also quite the variety of graphics cards options - even SLI. If for some reason you do not see what you want, they can build that laptop for you. I've never found one single company that can build laptops better than Eurocom. Completely serviceable and upgradeable

    I'm a little confused by how TDP wattage works. Is that the hard max on how much power a chip will draw (and heat it will put out)? Or will the 8550U actually draw more than 15W when it is using turboboost?

  • @JarrodsTech

    @JarrodsTech

    5 жыл бұрын

    It depends on the configuration of the specific laptop, but in general, the 8750h has a 45w TDP. When you smash it with a CPU benchmark in all cores it will run at the TDP defined in "turbo boost short power max", which may be something higher like 58w. It will stay like this for the period defined in "turbo boost power time window", which is usually 28 seconds. After 28 seconds, the TDP drops down to the number specified in "turbo boost power max", which is typically the TDP number specified for the chip, 45w in the case of the 8750h, and this is when power limit throttling starts happening, because the CPU is being limited and can't perform fully. You can use Intel XTU to view these values, and depending on the CPU you may also be able to modify them. The 8850h for example can have the power limited boosted by the user, so as long as there's no thermal throttling the increase to TDP will result in increased performance

  • @JarrodsTech

    @JarrodsTech

    6 жыл бұрын

    I had my first laptop with the 8250U about aweek ago, I'm going to compare it with the 8550U in a future video. With some undervolting though I was able to get stock 8550U performance on the 8250U in some cases, so it's fairly good and I think it would go ok at that task, but generally something that can sustain higher all core turbo speed like the 7700hq/8750h would probably work a bit better. Also of course depends on what you're exporting and settings etc, for instance I probably wouldn't want to use it to export long 4k footage unless you've got a lot of time 😛

    +Vinay@HD hmm not too sure, I recently did a review of the vivobook with 7700hq, and if I recall it did an acceptable job at keeping it cool, so if it was alright there I suspect it would be pretty good for the 8550u too as it's a lower power chip, I haven't tested this myself so this is just my best guess based on the information at hand

    Out of all laptop CPUs? Something like the new 8750H would be good, I can't really find out if those programs prefer single or multicore though, in either case that one is good at both. If you're picking between these two in this video I'd probably go the 7700HQ as it's got a higher TDP and will generally perform better over a longer period of time.

    I don't know how that program utilizes the CPU. If it depends on consistent multicore performance, then the 7700HQ, though ideally the newer i5-8300H or i7-8750H are a fair bit better than even the 7700HQ and are worth considering.

    Yes, the laptop with the 8550U did not come with a dedicated GPU, so it was the only option for testing games. I don't mention it here, because as mentioned both laptops are completely different with different cooling solutions. The 7700HQ for instance is in a thick laptop while the 8550U in a thin Dell XPS 13. If you want the temperatures of the 8550U you can check the review of the XPS 13 I've done, as for the 7700HQ you can check reviews on laptops I've done with that (such as the Alienware 13, MSI GE63VR 7RF, or Dell 7577 for a few examples) and you'll see the results vary quite a bit between laptops due to the unique cooling solutions.

    Great video. For normal use, if you can save on a 7th gen do then? I have been trying to buy a laptop for a few months now, and when I say trying I mean I have been overwhelmed by all of the options. I have a £700 grant from uni to replace my laptop: a HP ProBook 4250s (3rd gen i3 I think?) I'm not sure whether I should get something like an Acer Swift 3 with an i5 8th gen or get an older more premium model with a decent keyboard, like a 6th or 7th gen i5 Lenovo thinkpad. Although i do game, I will be using it mainly for writing, browsing and netflix. Its great to have so many options, but madding when you are as indecisive as I am! My old laptop met all my performance needs for 6 years but its started to overheat and the battery doesn't hold a change anymore. Any recommendations would help a lot!

  • @JarrodsTech

    For uni I'd be looking at picking what ever would best last over a longer period of time, so good build quality is important, so would lightweight and portability. Realistically though I think an i5 from 6th or 7th generation would be fine for what you're doing, although for netflix keep in mind that 7th gen is needed if you want the 4k hardware decoding :)

    I've been searching information on processors for a while now and your information was more informative than anything else I've viewed. I currently have the 7700HQ with a 512 SSD in the 15" Lenovo 720 with the Nvidia GEFORCE 1050 GTX as well as UHD 4K screen. I purchased but can cancel my order for the Lenovo 730 15" with the 8550U (with turbo boost), a 1TB PCIe SSD and the Nvidia GEFORCE 1050. However, the 730 comes at $1750 whereas I picked up the 720 for $900. Is it worth the upgrade or should I wait for the upcoming processors?

  • @JarrodsTech

    @JarrodsTech

    6 жыл бұрын

    Good to hear it was useful! I suspect a large part of the price difference would be the 1TB PCIe SSD, so hard to know how much of the price is the CPU difference. To be honest I'm not sure if there will be many new laptop CPUs coming in the near future, as the 8th generation seems to be mostly out for the most part, might be some new slightly different skews but in terms of architecture differences that would probably come with the 9th generation which I'd guess would be maybe a year off.

    That's what I was thinking as well. I had the Yoga 900 for 3 years and cracked the screen, thus the current search. My kids brought home the 720 and it's truly a great computer, but I don't plan on upgrading for several years so want to get something I will be happy with for the long term. The decked out 920 was only $200 cheaper with only a 256 PCIe SSD and 8 gigs and no UHD and cannot carry the NVIDIA graphics card. I went ahead and purchased because the price differential was so low to include UHD, NVidia and the 1TB PCIe...it just didn't make sense not to upgrade.

Also the 8550U in the XPS 13 is configured to use the max 25W, so that narrows the difference a bit, again I clarify that better in the new video.

    Thanks! While I think the Dell 7577 is a great option, at this point I'd probably hold on for a few months (hopefully, no one knows for sure!) and see what the next generation has to offer, as the older stuff has been around for a bit now, and although it's still good in theory the new options could reduce the prices of the 7th gen laptops a bit, so either way it should be win win I think :) that said I still get by day to day with my 6th gen 6700HQ and have no issues, so the 7700HQ is likely still a good option for a while to come if you do need something right now.

    Typically if the memory is soldered to the board you can't replace it, maybe if you really know what you're doing regarding desoldering and buy the proper memory to install it you could do it, but really risky unless you have experience with that. Without a discrete GPU in the laptop an external enclosure would be your best bet of actually being able to play games, it should be possible with your Thunderbolt 3 port, I recently reviewed an eGPU enclosure here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YnyX0rKpf7yac7w.html

    Jarrod'sTech based on your benchmarks, there's a clear difference between the 8550U and the 7700HQ but it's not big enough to claim that the former is better. I'm curious about that TDP, if both CPU's perform mostly similarly, what difference does the 3X TDP on the 7700HQ make over the 15W TDP of the 8550U ? One problem is, that you used Dell XPS. It uses cTDP up to 25W instead of 15W. That helps a lot with bridging the gap. Other part of the difference is that although 7700HQ is rated at 45W, it rarely runs anywhere near that number with CPU stress only (it runs around 30 watts). So the difference between those two CPUs is much smaller than one would think.

  • @JarrodsTech

    You should use throttle stop to find out if it was indeed thermal issues or if it was power limitation. 7700hq without an undervolt applied will hit the power wall and throttle like crazy even when temps are low. You need to go back and check these parameters to rule this out. A simple -145mv should do the trick on the 7700hq and -85mv to -115mv on the 8550u. You should also repaste these to lower the temps for a more fair comparison. The amount of variables must be limited in order to achieve real results.

    I haven't tested the 7300HQ myself, but I've had the 8250U recently, I expect them to be similar to these in that sustained multicore workload on the 8250U probably won't be great unless you have really good cooling, so I'd probably be looking towards the 7300HQ myself.

As you already mentioned, the 8550U quickly throttle down due to heat build up so in practice, it seldom reach the top speed in theory. I owned two i7 U-series laptops before and they all performed terribly in terms of gaming. Not even heavy triple-A titles, just some random games like counter strike, League of Legend and Dota 2. In one word, always select high power consumption CPUs if battery life is not your priority, the more power they suck in, the better performance they spit out.

Asus got as high as 720-ish in cinebench, my Lenovo got around 660 with 3.5ghz on boost and 2.9 sustainable frequency. @@JarrodsTech also: despite the advertised 15W TDP on the 8th gen i7s there is simply no way they could ever achieve anywhere close to the results in your video without using much higher short term TDP in order to boost to 3.5+GHz clocks. All of them do it, no matter which manufacturer, only question is how high above the 15Ws they are allowed to boost and for how long (depending on cooling implemented and limitations to the time duration of the higher TDP). Don't get me wrong your video is completely accurate considering Intel advertises the i7s as 15W CPUs, despite all of them consuming way above that in short bursts, especially under heavy loads or benching. The notion of 15W cpu achieving results comparable to previous gens 30+W is rather silly.

If both CPUs would be pushed to 3.8GHz then likely we would see a very slightly lower tdp on 8550U, but I wouldn't expect much. After all this is only a refresh of the same Kaby Lake cpu family.

    Tdp is not power usage.. It gives us an idea about the amount of cooling it requires(based on heat output) .. It's lower for 8550u because it's under clocked (base).. If it had to run at 3.7 on all cores, it will consume same power as 7700hq running at 3.7(approx as both are 14nm and not much architectural difference ).. Tdp varies a lot based on base clock. And Tdp is not maximum power consumption
