844 Northern Crosses Donner Pass Westbound
Here is part I of some footage I shot of the 844 Northern working its way up over the Sierra Nevada Westward on Thursday, 9/27/2012. I wanted to capture this event in a unique way I thought no one else would. Everyone seems to want to be right in front of the locomotive and essentially getting the same shot over and over. Listen closely to the whistle in this video (Shot in full HD), It's a deep, vibrant resonate sound that carries for miles! So, what better way to hear that than from a mountain top! The behemoth steam engine climbed to the top of the Sierra, stopped just short of tunnel 41 and blew the whistle 5 times! I lost count how many times the sound would echo off the basin walls! The train then proceeded through the tunnel and stopped again at Norden, and again at Colfax.

Thanks for the compliment. We are capturing many of the events happening around the 150th. No immediate plans for this footage to be used other than to archive at this time, but you never know!
Thanks for the video. I went to sac to see 844 sat the 29th. I had a wonderful time.
Thanks for the video. I went to sac to see 844 sat the 29th. I had a wonderful time. Outstanding video.
Music is the same score I used from our 2009 title "Big Steam 844." Not sure the name of it, we purchased the license to use it for the show. Glad you like it.
The 844 will be making its way back home on Thursday, 10/4/12 headed East over Donner Pass. Union Pacific Railroad will stop its historic locomotive 844 in Colfax on the return trip to Cheyenne, Wyoming. During the layover officials of Union Pacific will bestow upon the City of Colfax the title of "Train Town USA". 844 is scheduled to arrive about 10:00 am with the ceremony following immediately.
Total awesome video! Great.Thumbs Up 5*****
We wanted to try something different. In 2009 we used 5 camera crews to leap frog the train on the same route - Sparks, NV to Roseville. We captured just about every location imaginable then, so why duplicate the efforts? (Check out "Big Steam 844" ) I wanted to try something new, bold, never done before (that I know of), shooting the steam train from a mountain top where I could see a few miles of track. The most amazing thing was the sound of the whistle echoing off the canyon walls.
Please tell me you guys are doing another great Video.
Great video! What is the music you have playing in the background?
been cool if you left the desiels off
