#80s #Rock #Story
Hey music junkies and vinyl junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest 80s vinyl songs of all time for the music community and vinyl community.
If you’ve ever owned records, cassettes and CD’s at different times in you life or still do this is your place Subscribe below right now to be a part of our daily celebration of the rock era with exclusive stories from straight from the artists and click on our patreon link in the description to see our brand new show there.
IN the past we’ve talked about songs from decades that are hidden gems that deserve a second look. Today I want to go even a little further into a genre from the 80s and talk about three cult classics that, while not big chart hits per say, were three songs that impacted our culture in a major way. Some people are sticklers for labels or genres. They may say, oh that song isn’t New Wave it’s Post Punk or it’s synth pop or it’s sophista pop which by the way is a made up genre that has appeared decades after the music it claims to was even released. Due to our time and my goal to focus more on the song and artist than the genre. Im going to keep this simple. Here are three New Wave Cult classics from the 80s that deserve celebration. Remember these are three of many more that we’ll cover.
#3 The Downtown Lights” by The Blue Nile- From the 1989 album Hats This is a an absolutely beautiful, stirring and breathtaking Classic about longing for emotional fulfillment in the big city The Blue Nile is essentially a trio from Glasgow Scotland- with Paul Buchanan on lead vocals & guitar, Robert Bell on bass, and Paul Joseph Moore on keyboards. The band fashioned their name after historian Alan Moorehead’s 1962 book The Blue Nile- which was the sequel to his previous work The White Nile from 1960
#2 Private Idaho” by The B-52s
This is one of those songs that made the New Wave era SO much fun. The B52s were the ringleaders for sure, since their signature song “Rock Lobster” really paved the way in ‘79 for the spirit of that innovative period of music that ushered in the 80s
#1 “A Forest” by The Cure
One of the last tracks to be recorded for The Cure’s 2nd studio album Seventeen Seconds in 1980
Robert Smith has stated that “A Forest” is his memory of a childhood dream where he was lost in the woods, but he later retracted and said the song is only “about a forest.” Either explanation could be true, or both explanations could just be Robert being cheeky with an interviewer, as he often is.

Thanks for your words on "Genre Labeling". It is a new phenomenon. I'm an older guy, and though I'm not truly offended, I don't appreciate when youngsters try and parse "my" music into pretentious sub-genres...especially 60's and 70's. It belittles the Spirit of the Times, in my opinion, which was the entire artistic point of that music....Thanks for what you do...

I think this is why Robert Smith and Siouxsie Sioux get annoyed when people refer to their music as "goth". That term didn't exist when they started. They basically invented that style of music but it wasn't until many years later someone decided to retroactively call it Goth.

Yes, many New Wave bands have synths but not all, not to mention there were artists who had songs with synth yet weren't New Wave, for example, many pop-metal bands also used synth riffs.

We also have him to thank for some STELLAR remixes of classic 70s prog rock albums, such as King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, Camel, and MANY more. Oh dear. "Message to my Girl" guts me still. I thought I was the only person still alive who digs "This Corrosion." Exposure to so much innovative music in the late 70s, early 80s shaped my brain - and I haven't left any of the music loves I developed behind at all.

My favorite live version of “A Forest” is off The Cure’s “Show” video taken during the 1992 Wish Tour. So powerful especially the last couple minutes of the finale with just guitars. Not sure if they were from somewhere else or if he just made them up on the spot, but LOVE the added lyrics Robert used at the end 🎵 she said could you take me home tonight? There’s no other way I know. Walk the way you used to do. Of course I’ll take you home. This kiss could cost my life. It’s all I see in her eyes. This is the first time I've watched one of your videos, and I subscribed right away. Absolutely fantastic content! I grew up in the mid-80s and all of these songs/bands are at the heart of my musical tastes. I was able to see The Cure at Red Rocks in 1987 and to witness A Forest live is one of the highlights of my many many many concerts. Single spotlight on the closing, haunting guitar riffs...amazing! A Forest remains my favorite Cure song to date. KCGL / KJQ introduced a lot of the genre and culture they affectionally dubbed "Modern Music" to the youth of the Intermountain West and specifically Salt Lake City. I fell in love with it then and still embrace it now. One of the songs you should totally take a look at is New Order's "Thieves Like Us". I remember hearing it for the first time and knowing instantly this was a band who spoke my musical language. Peter Hook's bass isn't spectacular, just extremely well placed.

I wholeheartedly endorse your decision to use the term "new wave" broadly here; nitpicking about niche subgenres would not serve your videos. I admit that I was not familiar with The Blue Nile before this video, but Private Idaho and A Forest are stone-cold classics that deserve a spot in every music junkie's record collection. What are some others? Everything Counts by Depeche Mode (or almost any DM song, really). Making Plans for Nigel by XTC. She's Lost Control by Joy Division. Buffalo Gals by Malcolm McLaren. Genius of Love by the Tom Tom Club. Beep Beep Love by Gruppo Sportivo. Moving in Stereo by The Cars. Life During Wartime by the Talking Heads. The Chauffeur by Duran Duran. Mad World by Tears for Fears. Original Sin by INXS. On the Outside by Oingo Boingo. If you inch more towards the punk end of the spectrum, Marquee Moon by Television and Ghost Rider by Suicide. And of course there are countless other Cure songs that could qualify.
