80s Icon Wrote a Song About Cutting Edge Tech in 1980... Now it's Obsolete! | Professor Of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Up next another edition of our series Bottled Lightening One Album Wonders… Where an LP had multiple hit songs and then the artist Never had another hit. Rupert Holmes had three hits on his album Partners in Crime. the #1 smash Escape the Pina Colada Song and top 10 hit HIM and then the #32 hit Answering Machine about outdated tech that is pretty funny. but this story ups the ante. . Instead of fading to obscurity after his next two albums and song didn’t chart, he outsmarted the industry when they wouldn’t play his records anymore. He turned the tables on the old cliche one hit wonder and ended up being extremely successful in every aspect of the business including broadway, TV, and books.. It’s a great story coming up next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we break down the history of a beloved one hit extravaganza that still resonates in our culture.. but this time we are going to tweak it a little and talk about it from the album side. Where an album blew up with multiple hit singles and then never reached those levels again. Today’s story is very unique. Rupert Holmes shattered the Cliche one hit wonder when after having an album with 3 hits including the #1 smash Escape the Pina Colada song his next two album flopped.
He could’ve just been another promising artist who disappeared but he outsmarted the very industry that swallows entertainers whole. He knew he didn’t have Robert Redford’s looks or Freddie Mercury’s voice but he was a witty songwriter with a creative mind so he turned the tables and diversified his talents. He pursued other avenues including creating plays and musicals for broadway, writing songs for other artists, creating television programs and writing books. He became one of the most successful renaissance men in modern entertainment history creating tony award wining plays and an emmy award winning television series as well as best selling author as well as writing a #1 hit for a band in the late 80s.
Up next Ruper Holmes tells us the stories behind these hits and his conquest to master an industry that is so unforgiving including his last solo hit that has become a relic of the 80s due to being about a piece of technology that we no longer use… and his #1 hit that he gave to another artist in 1987. Trust me, Rupert is always a gas. As we go into this interview I want to thank our sponsor Zenni Eyewear. Since Zenni has been our sponsor i’ve received so many comments from our viewers who have loved their glasses and especially the features like antifog antiglare and Blue Blokz. These guys are the real deal. Go to Zenni .com now to get board. Here’s one of our greatest story tellers. Rupert Holmes. What do you think about Rupert Holmes writing his own ticket ? Let me know in the comments below. Let’s have a nice discussion. I think it’s pretty interesting how Rupert played to his strengths mastering several areas of the industry.

What I thought was interesting was that when Rubert came out with The Pina Colada Song all the rock and pop men all wore long hair and dressed a certain way (with the exemption of Elton John and David Bowie). Rubert Holmes looked liked your math and science teacher which in a weird way made rhe songs he did more relatable. The creativity people had back then. No wonder our entertainment was so good.

I was hitherto oblivious to the fact that Rupert composed "You Got it All", possibly my favorite song by the Jetts. It's kind of funny, but back when MP3 sharing was still free of charge and a black market entity, I was looking for their original version of the song and first ended up downloading a copy of the Britney Spears cover. The minute Rupert mentioned Britney's name in the context of not writing sexually explicit material for teenagers to sing, I almost went through the ceiling.

Oh man, such a kewl interview with Rupert Holmes. Can’t believe I forgot about that answering machine song lol. Did not know he wrote You Got It All for The Jets. As for Piña Colada, it was constantly playing on the PA at my first job in a supermarket in 1990 along with other 70s and early 80s songs (Starbuck, America, Fleetwood Mac, Starland Vocal Band, and Olivia Newton-John to name a few), so every time I hear it especially if I’m in a supermarket these days, it brings back memories of bagging groceries and getting caught in the rain while bringing in the shopping carts.🤘🏻

I remember those days of answering machines. My parents got one in the early 80s. There were several friends who refused to "talk to a machine" so would repeatedly call every few minutes and hang up if the machine answered causing it to record a blank message. My personal favorite was the ones who felt that you should know it had been them.

My favorite TV show is "The Partridge Family". It debuted on my 5th birthday and while I didn't pay much attention to it during it's first couple of seasons I quickly fell in love with it before it went into reruns. I loved all the music as well and like The Monkees before them the Partridge Family had a great stable of writers and one of the things I don't hear too much when everyone talks about Rupert Holmes is his contribution to the PF catalog, "Echo Valley 2-6809" . Years later Jenny's number would become more etched in my mind than this one but like other Rupert songs, he does a great job of painting a picture of the story in your head with his lyrics. The powerful and super emotive voice of David Cassidy worked so well with that song. As far as "Escape" goes, I'm not usually one for having a song take me back to a particular time like most people but this one does bring me back to my time of adolescence. I was around 14 when that one came out and that's right about the time most people, including myself, start to really gain an appreciation for music and develop their specific musical tastes. Puberty was over and high school was just beginning so it was a very memorable time in my life and that song definitely marks it in my mind.

Wow! I didn't realize Rupert did so much! And I had heard "Him" before, just didn't know Rupert sang it. And let's face it, the "Pina Colada Song" is immortal! I've seen younger generations do their KZread reaction videos of them listening to it - they like it and think it's hilarious! 😀

As soon as you said he'd "diversified his talents," I KNEW It was Rupert Holmes! I remember watching the TV show in the 90s called "Remember WENN" about a radio station during WWII and being surprised when I saw his name in the credits as "Creator." (It was a really good series, too!) Since then I've seen his name pop up in other "unexpected" places. As for "Answering Machine" being "obsolete," not quite yet. Nowadays they tend to be built into phones, but they're very much a real thing. As for technology songs, "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, or for folks into Canadian folk artists, "White Collar Holler" by Stan Rogers. What I find so amazing about the latter is that even though Stan Rogers died in 1983, the technology mentioned in that song hasn't changed.

How amazing is it that everything he puts his heart into became gold. If there was a man that really did follow his dreams and succeed it's Rupert. What a fascinating guy.Great work professor. Rupert Holmes is the ultimate renaissance man and I’m just glad I’m living in his world. What other artist can you say has successfully covered it all? Radio, theater, television, books-frankly, I’m astonished he hasn’t written a movie but that may be up his sleeve so I may be speaking too soon. Give the man an honorary EGOT! 😁

Lol I actually have an answering machine for my land line. It's digital. Not a cassette. I got one a couple years ago when robo calls got ridiculous. It's easier to screen calls than on voice messages. I haven't heard the answering machine song in years.

Rupert's debut solo album on Epic/CBS Records in 1974, "Widescreen," caught the attention of Barbra Streisand, who loved Rupert's ability to craft a recorded sound not unlike a cinematic film experience. She enlisted him to produce her 1975 Columbia Records album, "Lazy Afternoon," where she recorded his "Widescreen" song (and several others). He also produced and arranged several other Babs albums! Rupert, showing his flexibility, also produced Sparks' "Big Beat" album (also for Columbia) in 1976. Seriously, if all you musically know about Rupert is "Escape," leave that song to the old ladies over tea, and do a deep dive into the man's vast production, arranging, songwriting, and recording output! I'm sure we've all heard "Escape" 84,000 times too many, by now (this week alone)! Diversify your listening experience!

Hi Professor Of Rock; I am a big Rupert Holmes fan, too, and bought all his albums. I quite enjoyed your additional interview footage. I love all his songs and I hope you’ll ask him about less known ones like “Terminal,” “Letters The Cross In The Mail” which Barbra Streisand covered, and “The People That You Never Get To Love” which Susannah McCorkle covered. You have cool Al Green and Phil Collins shirts. Yes, I used to jot down rankings from Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40,” not in a Trapper Keeper but on paper from dad’s Philco Ford company. Yes, it is great how he diversified into other entertainment areas, but I was so disappointed he stopped making albums. Rupert Holmes’ “Answering Machine” is not obsolete. I still check my answering machine messages, not voicemail, not texts, each time I get home. I don’t own a cellphone, never have and never will. From Rupert’s next two albums you said flopped, the both excellent “Adventure” and conceptual “Full Circle,” “Morning Man” reached #68 Billboard pop, #21 Adult Contemporary, and “I Don’t Need You” reached #56 and #21 AC. “Loved By The One You Love” and “The End” were also top 40 AC hits. As for “didn’t have Robert Redford’s looks,” I knew a lady who thought Rupert was very handsome and had a flat of his “Adventure” album you said “flopped” on her bedroom wall. The term “very unique” is ungrammatical. “Unique” is an absolute term, either something is unique or it is not; uniqueness cannot be grammatically be qualified in degrees. I’d rather hear Rupert Holmes’ voice than Freddie Mercury’s. When you said and wrote that the album with multiple hits never reached those levels again, you meant the artist never did. I wish you had not brought up “pack of cigarettes” in ”Him,” especially since cigarettes killed my father even though he quit smoking before I was born. I loved the song “Him” except it’s tough to just gloss over the first verses about cigarettes and a particular brand of “smokes.” I don’t blame Rupert; I know it’s meant to be a “slice of life” story; I just hope he doesn’t smoke these days. You wanted to claim Rupert’s next two albums after “Partners In Crime” had no hits, so you acted like the AC chart doesn’t exist. But I guess since you think it sounds better to say “You Got It All” reached #1 instead of #3, you only refer to the AC chart placing in that case, without clarifying which chart you meant. So you alter the concept of chart peaks in the listeners’ minds to suit your attention grabbing goals. I think it is more important to make certain the listener always gets easy to understand facts about chart positions as well as the other details. You do great at many other aspects. The Jets’ career ended up messed up by tragedy, and I understand referring to that would have gotten too off topic for your presentation, but it would have been nice if your feature had named the “You Got It All” lead singer Elizabeth Wolfgramm. Have a nice day and keep up the excellent work.

P.S. Rupert made great points about how people would try to screen 1980s phone calls or disbelieve the person was really out. I liked how 1980s answering machines let you eject a cassette tape to dub off messages you wanted to keep. My answering machine now keeps having too little space because I can't do that. By the way, I used to think the lyric "I'm not in at present, I'm sure you know this whole routine" was "I'm not any person, I'm sure you know this whole routine."
