    We were more minamillistic by using a $55 Wal-Mart metal bed frame and a $220 Wal-Mart full mattress, propped up with bricks and concrete piers to even bed. Had plenty of storage underneath for 2 suitcases, food, clothing and toiletries. But thus one is far cleaner look and multifunctional.

    Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I have watched all your videos many times and, being a constructivist, have so enjoyed your 8020 designs and builds. I would love to be able to play with that stuff if I could afford it. I have been on a waiting list for a new Sienna for 6 months and, at 74 years of age, don't have time to wait. And, I discovered that my 2018 RAV4 has 75 inches of length for a bed after removing half of the second row bench seat. So I'm off on a new adventure in my old car with more money to spend on gas and campgrounds! Thanks again, I won't stop watching Tellvia.

    @@spiritualexercise265Agree, the 5 gal bucket takes a bit of space. We plan to use the space at the bottom of the bucket (underneath the disposable bag) to store extra supplies like paper towels, water shoes etc. as only part of the bracket’s volume is required for the toilet function. Cheers!

    The aluminum used can be pretty expensive. A similar alternative for the bed platform is often done with 2x4s & thinner wooden horizontal slats work well for supporting the mattress. Cheap & light. Love the back section for the toilet 💡, water & battery. There's also a smaller fridge that other KZreadrs have used, which fits perfectly replacing the removed storage console between the front seats.

    Hi Gay, there is 72” in length between the rear door panel and backs of folded and slid all the way forward 2nd raw seats. So yes a platform can be build to have just a bed in this space. In fact, you can even keep the 3rd raw seats folded and make floor behind folded rear seat leveled with flat luggage and gear, put a mattress on top and you’d be ready for sleeping. The only luggage you’ll be able to bring with you, however, should be packable onto the front seats at night. Cheers!

    Very impressive! We are considering a 2021 or 2022 sienna, to use as a camper van. You are so skilled and creative, I wonder if you could come up with a plan for a bed and storage for 2, without taking out the second row seats, and allowing them to still be useable, when needed. IF we decide on the Sienna, we could not really remove the 2nd or 3rd row seats. We would get a swing away storage box, for the back of the van, for more storage.

Any roof top load reduces fuel economy reduces fuel economy from 6 to 30% according to the US Dept of Transportation Study. So far we found that we have enough space inside for everything we want to bring camping. Cheers!

    Looks great, I am a bit confused by placing the fridge and water jug above the bed. That's the space where your legs should rest while sleeping. There seems to be room left for just one person's legs now, but the bed is wide enough for two. You didn't show your new build in sleeping configuration (with the mattress and pillows,) so I might be missing something... And I'd like to see a little "demonstration" of going from sleeping position to using the bucket toilet - is it possible to do that without waking up the other person (assuming there are two of you)?

    Hi Rodney, thank you for watching! The bed structure feet were from TNUTZ.com, some other vendors may carry them as well. As you saw in the video the bed structure is secured to 3 floor seat mounts and bed platform does not move side to side on the road. The feet extensions are fixed in place with 80/20 fasteners. I hope this answers your question. Cheers!

Can I ask what screws you use to fasten the velcro to the 80/20? Didn't realize those were so strong! Also, what adjustable angle brackets would I use if I were to use the 10 series 80/20? Thank you!

  • @Tellvia

    @Tellvia

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Cindy, thank you for watching! The 80/20 aluminum parts come in metric (mm) and imperial standards (inches). The metric standard is available as Series 10, Series 25 and Series 40. The imperial standard has Series 15 (most common) and Series 30 sizes. In both systems the higher the load on the structure the higher Series extrusions are recommended. If you plan to build just shelves for your project using Series 10 would be okay but for bed or sitting surfaces Series 10 would be too weak. Each Series has specific mounting hardware which in most of cases is not compatible with other standards and Series. The only exception is Series 15 and Series 40 - the brackets for this series are cross-compatible, but the bolts and nuts are not (since one is imperial and the other is metric. I highly recommend to commit to one of the standards and Series as it will get very confusing when your search for right parts in your project. I use Series 15 parts and sometimes buy brackets that are Series 40. For attaching Velcro strips to extruded aluminum rails I use 5/16-18 x 1/2" Button Head Socket Cap Screws, 304 Stainless Steel 18-8, Bright Finish, Coarse Thread Fully Threaded, Allen Hex Drive, 20 PCS - amzn.to/3Y9G3s9. The length of the screw is defined by the the depth of the Al extrusion rail grove and the thickness of a bracket or material that is being attached to the the rail. Velcro is very thin so ½” screw length is right to attach it to Series 15 extrusion. You would have to measure the depth of the Series 10 rails to determine the length and the thickness of the that will work for Velcro. I am working on Tellvia Membership portal where I will publish tutorial videos about 80/20 aluminum structures I’ve build in which I would go in greater detail on compatibility of parts and talk about other practical considerations. I plan to make this portal to be available to members in the next few weeks. I hope this is helpful. Cheers!

    If it would be very easy, could you send me the interior dimensions of the Sienna with 2nd row seats folded up? I can't find them on line anywhere; Toyota only lists volume. I have watched your videos many times and I still marvel at your creativity and drive for perfection. And you are having fun!!!

  • @Tellvia

    @Tellvia

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Linda, sorry for belated reply. We were on a camping trip for past two weeks with no access to internet. As with most of modern vehicles the precise interior dimensions are difficult to measure because of curved interior surfaces. In new Hybrid Sienna model with 2nd row seats folded I still was able to fit a 72” x 48” mattress. The floor in the van in not flat and it slopes down toward the front of the van. Thus, a sleeping/leveling platform is required to sleep comfortably. The high of the space behind folded 2nd row seats varies between 46 to 42 inches from floor to sealing. I recently build a second version of my camping conversion (here is a link to my video 8020 Aluminum Camping Rig for Hybrid Sienna Minivan kzread.info/dash/bejne/g22dltqccZeeldo.html), that allows a more comfortable seating on the bed. When building my conversions I had to custom measure and fit every peace because of the complex shape of interior panels and because of smaller side and rear door openings for placing the rig components in and out of the van. I don’t have a clear answer for you, but hope that my explanation is somewhat helpful. Cheers!

If you simply give TNUTZ your order number(s), they can put together a package with all the Aluminum parts (cut to spec) and you could get a commission on each one sold. What do you think? I will also be interested in your membership portal. You have great ideas and ingenuity! My approach will be to use 80/20 (or a variant) to build out a camper for 1 person to be in for a few weeks at a time. I'll keep one middle row seat on the passenger side and place my, stove, water and other things behind it in a custom cabinet. The driver's side will be for a narrow bed at night and open space when not sleeping. A Lagun table will probably be included for the middle passenger seat, for eating, computer work, etc. Many design details are still in the formative stages but it seems a workable approach, based on your videos so far. Keep up the great work!! You have given a lot of inspiration to people who want to do similar things.

I’m temporarily using 11” cots which fold easily and provide great underneath storage but they don’t level nicely.

    Hi Telvia - Quick follow up question: Would you happen to know where the hybrid battery is located on your Sienna? I am expecting my new Sienna next month and will most likely do something similar, but I am curious as to whether I can remove that big bump in front of the back seat area. I have a bad feeling that the hybrid battery is located back there somewhere like it is on my Prius. If I can't level out that bump, I will need to do something similar with 80/20 in order to install a level floor. Ultimately, I'm hoping to install a bed as well as a kitchen and workspace area. This Sienna build is going to be way more complicated than I was expecting. 😑

    Hi William, than you for watching. The hybrid battery in new Sienna located under the front seats. There are two air inlets under the outer sides of the front seats to the fans that cooling it. I hope your Sienna will arrive without delay. Cheers!

    Do you think the woodland edition is much better if I just want the occasional camper, and maybe once a year head to the mountains mostly on shoveled roads though? Or is the normal xle or xse enough? Also, how important is awd or is it more hassle than it is worth

  • @Tellvia

    @Tellvia

    Жыл бұрын

    The AWD system in Sienna is electric motor based. Even in normal every day driving this AWD system is very useful. I see on the drivetrain monitor in our Sienna that AWD engages automatically during accelerations, or when going up steep streets. It engages automatically only when the system detects that that it will be beneficial for the van’s driving dynamics and safety. It also helps to keep the van stable at highway speeds. Many of FWD vehicles have problem with spinning front wheels during off the stop acceleration, even in normal driving not a drug-race. This is mitigated with AWD setup. We never take our van in snow country but I feel and see the benefits of AWD system any time I drive it. Regarding the fuel economy penalty - it is only 1mpg lower that FWD. In our experience we see 35.5 mpg average after 20K driven. It terms of reliability and longevity, because it is an electric drive at rear wheels similar to modern EVs, which is proven to be reliable, and since it engages only when needed, I believe it will outlast the front drive setup. We use our Sienna primarily as a camping vehicle and sometimes have to drive on gravel roads to reach campgrounds. The AWD makes the van feel sure-footed on those roads. Since your are an occasional camper you probably will be happy with FWD as well, but for the price difference the AWD may be worth considering. The Woodland addition has better included options than Limited. If you don’t need the AC inverter XSE may be a good choice, as it has sportier looking front fender and wheels. Good luck with your hunt for your new Sienna. Regardless of the trim and options I think you will be happy with it. Cheers!

    @@Tellvia Thanks so much for the thoughtful response! Two last questions: 1) Is the extra 0.6 inches of height clearance on the woodland meaningful in camping / everyday situations or would I be just as good with XSE model? 2) I am being offered the xse 25th anniversary edition in FWD... this one has 20 inch wheels too, so a bit worried about ride quality for an everyday commuter, and occasional camper. Given what you just said in your response, I would probably prefer an AWD and this one also has the rear entertainment system with NO electronic mirror, and the RES is something I could probably do without (and blocks the rear view mirror!). With that being said, it is a 25th edition and I'm being offered at msrp + 2k, which seems to be a reasonable mark up around where I am. Any thoughts and insights would be much appreciated. Amazing videos and great ideas on camping with the sienna!

  • @Tellvia

    @Tellvia

    Жыл бұрын

    @@thedadmikey5820 Here are my thoughts about your questions: 1) The 0.6” clearance is nice but is not critical for camping and at most developed campgrounds, you’d be good with XSE model. 2) I know you are excited about the offer for the 25th anniversary van they have available but I would pass on this deal, here is why: the RES system protrudes down from the ceiling almost 3” and rubs us of the headroom when sleeping in the van. It will be also obsoleted when you decide to sell the car. I know deals and prices have been terrible in the past two years but 2K over MSRP seem to be to high as the car sales in 2023 have been slumping. We paid MSRP for our van in April 2021. I believe you will be able to get your van for less if your are prepared to wait for couple of month and negotiate harder. I don’t know how 20” wheels perform on Sienna, we have 19” wheels and the ride is very comfortable. May be 20” would be good as well. The camera-based rear mirror is really nice to have, especially when you carrying a lot of luggage of bulky items blocking the rear view. I hope this helps. Let me know what trim/options you end up buying. Cheers!

    80/20s create too much dead space. In a small place like a minivan you have to make use of every square inch. Get rid of those seat sliders and fit a plywood floor that is stepped up in the back. Then build a level bed / storage system on top. Make sure that your fridge and any cooking options are accessible from the inside. Using any of this from the outside makes zero sense when it rains, when its dark, or when you try to stay stealthy.

  • @Tellvia

    @Tellvia

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Asad, thank you for watching. As you can see from the video I leave the 80/20 structure open - so the space under/inside of the rigging is available for storage. 80/20 provides high load capacity, rigidity and relative ease of assembly. This set of advantages will be difficult to achieve with any other building material. The main advantage of hybrid Sienna is high fuel efficiency. We value this and putting anything on the top of the van will reduce it’s fuel efficiency by ~30%. The van is too small to be able to use kitchen inside of the van regardless of the weather (at least when two people are traveling inside). Cheers!
