My Grandad was driving an AEC Matador through Halfaya Pass 1st December 1941, when they took a direct hit from a fighter bomber, everyone was killed, so even though I never knew him, these great old vehicles hold a very special place in my heart, I'd own one tomorrow if I could.

I went to Gaydon when they had a commercial day. Some bloke had a Matador and converted the back for sleeping in. Took him 2 days to drive up from Somerset, said it was hard work and didn't like going in a straight line. He was kind enough to let me sit in the cab and start it up, amazing highlight of a great day.

I am now 74 and have an old photo of my dad and his soldier mates all sat across the roof of a Matador . it was during W W 2 in the 8th army . he was a driver on supplies . I myself was an H G V mechanic for Shell Mex and B P from 1970 and we had a mixed fleet with lots of A E C s including Mercury , Mammoth Major . etc . In the 1980s we had a Scammell artic roll over loaded on the approach to a motorway services on the M5 and we had to tranship the load onto another vehicle .luckily the outlet valves were up in the air as it had rolled onto its right hand side . guess what ,the recovery vehicle that pulled it back upright and towed it back to Kingsbury Oil terminal was a Matador . thanks for a lovely video .

I remember working in a wood yard as a kid. They had two of these lovely beasts lugging around huge trunks of Elm (when Dutch Elm disease was at it's peak) and I'll never forget the sight of them bouncing the front wheels across the yard because of the weight they were carrying. They were sat running for hours on end chuffing out smoke rings that drifted off across the sky.

Drag coefficient? Heater??? Heavens, mate - the only way you could get a Matador to top 36mph was to coast down a very steep hill in neutral - so it's drag coefficient was a purely academic concern :)) As for heaters; heaters were (at best) an optional extra in Brit *cars* until the early 60s, let alone in trucks . . .
