80's Commercials Vol. 18
Ойын-сауық
These commercials aired on local ABC affiliate KNTV 11 on the afternoon of September 29th, 1987. These are the sort of daytime TV, infomercially ads that usually make me want to slit my wrists, but they're from the 80's, so I automatically love all of them.
1. News Break (San Francisco Giants get first place in NL West)
2. 976 HITS (The answer is Bon Jovi, obviously)
3. Calico Kate's Restaurant
4. Bay Valley Tech (That jingle is amazing)
5. Nutri System
6. Electric Mobility Scooters (That old guy going up the curb is my hero)
7. Promo for "Cheers"
8. U.S. Savings Bonds
9. Northern California AIDS Hotline
10. Superior Training Services
11. Contour Chair Lounge (With Art Linkletter! The VCR guy is incredible!)
12. Northern California AIDS Hotline (With Ron Reagan)
13. Remnant World Discount Carpets (Remnant World sounds more like a future dystopian outpost in a Kurt Russel/John Carpenter movie than a carpet store)
14. News Break
15. Padway & Padway Lawyers
16. Furnishings 2000
17. Diet Pepsi (Awesome!)
18. The Spirit Of San Jose (Featuring footage of Pope John Paul II's visit to California)
19. Lovestars (The voices saying "Stars, Stars" really creep me out)

@Nox0verstreet This channel is about preserving 80's commercials...both good and bad, all stripes and colors. If you're not prepared to sit through the occasional crappy local ad or infomercial...this channel is not for you.
Not only do you have the commercials I grew up with, you have the regional commercials I grew up with. San Jose CA in the 80's ❤
omg, the VCR Guy.
What a odd, melancholic experience it is to watch these commercials. I love it, but it makes me a bit sad.
Man the 80's seems better than 2018 these are awesome videos they make me happy! :)
Old men who ride electric scooters up curbs with a reckless air of danger and bravado are always heroes to me. I'm not really sure why you had to ask.
I tried ordering a chair so I could get a free VCR but it only kept ringing :(

This is a very old sentence.
The Art Linkletter spot has always been a classic favorite of mine and my friends.
Thanks. I miss the Contour chair VCR drunk. He always cracked me up.
I love local commercials. It gives you an idea what that area was like then.
I remember that 976-Hits commercial. "If that was U2 press 1. Bon Jovi press 2". This was the beginning of touchtone dialing.
ahhh 976 numbers, the pop up ads of the 80's
I'm a little rascal in my little rascal
Why do I feel as they still show those CONTOUR CHAIR commercials TODAY??!! LOL
My dream home now includes 57 contour chairs. Coolest. Chairs. Ever!!
I didn't know Nutri System was around back then. I first started hearing about them in the 2000's

I'm pretty sure they were a lot less popular back then and they were only around for about a decade by the point that this compilation is from

I definitely remember seeing Nutri-System ads in the 1980's, though I think they may have had more print ads in magazines and newspapers as opposed to TV commercials.
Yeah, that guy at 5:26 literally has me laughing out loud here... I remember all of these, as I born in 1974, hehe.
The Diet Pepsi commercial was easily the best one of the bunch.
Wow!! This is the first time I've seen KNTV news here on youtube. Thanks for the memories and keep 'em coming!!
Fun fact: in the Cheers promo, the TV reporter was played by Fred Dryer. He was considered for the role of Sam Malone before they ultimately went with Ted Danson.
Great vid. I forgot all about that guy getting the "Living on a Prayer" question right. The collage would've been perfect if there was ad for "South Bay Dental." I'd love to see those ads again. "Why I've paid more for a haircut!" (South Bay! We're taking better care of you!!)
I always wanted my mom to get the contour chair--so we could get the free tv. The chair looked fun too.
cause it would my guess is the company that made the chair makes adjustable beds now.
that dude blew his back out on that curb lol
And "Cheers" was on NBC at the time, too.
I wonder if that color tv is still available with that chair
@humhunny It was located in San Jose, CA. The location is now a Round Table Pizza.
KNTV was actually an ABC affiliate during the 80's.
hahaha the old people electric mobility hahahahha 5 stazzzz
I also thought that FCC rules at the time prevented network affiliates in the top 50 markets from showing sitcom reruns during the access hour before the beginning of prime time. I know KNTV served as the ABC station for Monterey and Salinas, but (as they kept reminding us) was based in San Jose, which is part of the San Francisco market. I wonder how they got around that rule.
No, it's the company that makes the "Rascal" brand scooter.
This may not be what you're thinking of, but I have a commercial for "South Bay Health Center" in Vol. 15 where they advertise a dental checkup for 12 bucks.
when people get home and put there electric mobility away they probably go out in the yard and do some landscaping
Yeah, they were making it sound like some sort of deadly disease or something.
watched now vol 1 to 18 :)
5:25 I GOT THE VCR

I was born in 1999, but I love these commercials!
I can't believe there was so much attention on aids in the 1980s

I remember there was a LOT of hype about AIDS back then.
Well compared to today, where aids gets almost no attention, and those afflicted in Africa are allowed to die from it, it's quite a contrast. I wasn't alive in the 1980s, so I'm used to almost no attention being focused on this disease
Commercials like that are still on the cw and fox in the afternoon when all the brain-draining shows like jerry springer, maury, and the courtrooms shows are on. It's always ads for career colleges, wheelchairs (or the sugarcoated name "power scooters"), car accident lawyers, and compensation for when a medication goes wrong, because they know their audience. People who are unemployed, fat and in need of wheelchairs to get their fat asses around, horrible at driving and owning shelves full of medications.
That answer is easy, it's a heck of a lot funnier knowing why.
I'm pretty sure Helen Kushnick (from the first AIDS PSA) was Jay Leno's agent the first time he stole the Tonight Show. Hmmm...I wonder what movie the Diet Pepsi ad people watched before creating that ad.
Yeah you are right the people saying stars stars is really creepy
@st4ngeI2 Yeah, let's just pretend inflation doesn't exist!
adjusting for inflation, he went from about $28K a year to $55K a year. nice jump in pay i think.
@80sCommercialVault Unfortunattely, because of that, people who really DO need a power chair are consitered "lazy."
do u live i n california theses commericals are great
Is it just me or is the guy at 3:46 holding the phone in his hand with a strange grip?
If it makes you feel any better, here is a New York City area version of the "Lovestars" commercial I found the other day without the disjointed vocal overlay- actually quite beautiful and sets the tone of the ad when they leave it out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWSCssyCn5uwhLA.htmlm00s Thanks for your version too!
sadly the bbq place is LONG GONE yes I live in Campbell so I know :D

joey ferman That's a shame..cause it looked like some delicious stuff.
Ah the "let's scam gullible kids with a 976 number" days.
Who wants to have a comment conversation? *scoffs*
Was that Rob Paulsen shilling Cheers?
26k a year? F that - you can make that at McDonald's son
@st4ngeI2 Due to inflation, you got more for your money back then. You can take 26k times 1.9 to get todays rate. $49400 in todays money :)
@slipknot789able The elderly folks in the commercial do NOT look like they'd be doing yardwork. Especially the Woman rolling up to the medicare claims office . This was way before these power chairs were marketed to the morbidly obese.
If I remember right (and please correct me if I'm wrong, because my memory of the 80s is a bit blurry),people were afraid to have blood transfusions because of AIDS, right?
worst volume yet. still dig it though.

Although this is not my favorite volume either, I think it's great that this whole series is giving us a representation of the wide variety of TV commercials that aired in the 1970's and 80's.
