8 Surprising Impacts Of My 6-Month Clothes Shopping Ban

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, one woman shows us what she gained (and how much she saved) from not spending on clothes for 6 months.
Through weekly video essays, "Making It Work" showcases how real people have upgraded their personal or financial lives in some meaningful way. Making your life work for you doesn't mean getting rich just for the sake of it. It means making the most of what you have to build a life you love, both in your present and in your future. And while managing money is a crucial life skill for everyone, there's no one "right way" to go about it - you have to figure out what works best for you, full stop.

I did 2 fashion-no-buy-years in a row some time ago. It actually was way easier than I had expected and after about the first 3-4 month the urge to by anything new just disappeared. Now I purchase about 4 new pieces a year, mainly to replace broken items or pieces too used to be suitable for the office. It saved me time, energy and money and transformed the way I think about clothes and shopping. Highly recommend.

@@jackyyrag No, I don't use any social media except for watching videos on you tube. What I usually did, was 'fake shopping' as I realized that the fun part for me was planning the purchase. So I would compare different items, think about possible outfits together with my existing wardrobe and select the pieces I liked most. But never ordered them. I had read the tip in a book about minimalism once, that when we go to an art exhibition, we don't expect to take any of the paintings home and should treat more things the same way. So I just visited the 'exhibition' in my favourite brands online shops. Might not work for everyone, but for me it did.

This is why I liked the work from home. I was able to wear my t-shirts and shorts from 10 years ago even though they have tiny holes in them because no one cares what you look like at home and I didn’t need to dress up just to get my work done.

I'm glad I never had this problem. When I was young, we would usually go shopping twice a year, only during the two sale seasons. My mother would buy me only a reasonable amount of clothes, and I would get some from my sisters cousins etc.. And it hasn't stopped since, I love good deals thrifting and being given clothes for free!

At the beginning of Covid, I did less 'in person' shopping, and I've never had luck buying clothes online (fit, fabric, or overall quality has always been a disappointment). One weekend I decided to 'shop my closet' and really look at what was in there. It was a SHOCK. I thought I knew what I had! So many outdated, too big or too small, or unflattering items shoved to the back - wow. I got rid of two big bags immediately. Then I started digging in - every day I forced myself to wear something I hadn't worn in a while. I found that I had about 260 tops in the house! Some were in storage boxes or in an old dresser in another room which I had totally forgotten about. Some were literally 4 sizes too small - but others were items I've had for literally 30 years and they still look good - and make me feel good! So I wore a top, washed it, and put it on the left side of the closet or drawer. I kept taking from the right hand side. Each time I wore something that didn't make me feel good, it went into the donation pile. I made bags for friends who are smaller than me or like different styles. After almost a year, my closets had only clothes that fit, that I liked, and that I knew I'd use. I felt no need to shop because I have so much! I don't know if others have this situation, but it's worth a try - you may be surprised.

I wish there was any mention of sustainability in this video. Like when you start buying again, check some pre-owned clothing instead of fast fashion stores. Thrift stores, thred up, poshmark, depop, facebook marketplace, vintage, there are many sources now for pre-owned clothing and you can often get a high quality used piece for the same (or less) than a brand new fast fashion piece. Trend cycles are getting shorter and shorter so almost any current trend can be found in the pre-owned market. It's not only about saving money, it's also about reducing textile waste.

It really does depend on several factors. After lugging around my post menopausal weight gain compounded by quarantine weight gain, I finally got serious about my health and lost 47 pounds (2 dress sizes). I started working corporate jobs ages ago and had a lot of classic, high quality pieces that I kept because I didn’t want to part with them. Now I’m wearing my classic blazers and skirts and it’s like having a whole new wardrobe. I’d be kicking myself if I had gotten rid of those items.

For me, holding on to small clothes was a practice in discipline. It has been the motivational factor in my weight loss. For 10 years I held on to my size 4s although I'd become a post menopausal size 14. At times it seemed hopeless but I was *determined* to "get back into my normal size 4". I just couldn't part with my most beloved items!!! Finally, during pandemic lockdown, while most people gained 20 *I lost 50* ! Fitting into those beloved size 4s again has revitalized my life! The icing on the cake is that I still have the items that truly "spark my joy"!

I've never really been a part of fast fashion unless you count graphic tees from Walmart. I did do a huge cleanout of my wardrobe about 4 years ago and decide that I would not wear anything that wasn't comfortable. I threw out all the tank tops that I had to keep pulling up and all the pants that just felt too restrictive. I cut down to a few pairs of shoes that I love both bc of simplicity and bc bad shoes really agrivate my joint pain. I tried to buy clothes that would pair well with the rest of my whole wardrobe so no matter what's in the wash I can wear most of my clothes with whatever bottom that's clean. The result is a wardrobe that I can reach into any day and find a comfy outfit that looks good enough for a job interview. It really helps my self esteem.

This video made me add up how much I spent on clothes (including undergarments) and shoes in 2021. I am shook. I thought I only spend like $600 last year and it was almost $1500. That’s a ridiculous amount considering how much I ended up giving away because I just wasn’t wearing it. You don’t realize how much you spend when it’s a purchase here and there. 100% agree with the practices above! I have a thrift shop near me that gives 50% discount on items you buy there if you take your old clothes you don't want anymore. I found that thrifting timeless pieces + buying smaller trendy accessories (earrings, hair accessories, etc.) will still create that trendy look, and it's much more sustainable. And with fashion being cyclical, you'll have everything you need very soon. I recently started wearing accessories I bought 10 years ago again because they are in style again.

A great thing about working from home is not having to worry about being "professional." I am a tall athletic person with long feet, and "professional" women's clothing seems to be designed mainly for short, unmuscular people.. making finding something I like and that fits nearly impossible. I always favored sport/casual clothing (I would love to wear exclusively bouldering pants) because it fits and is comfortable, and now I can because I don't have to show up to a corporate setting. Going to work generally made me feel like a weirdo and knocked my confidence because I felt like such an imposter, trying to fit in and failing. So happy to not have to deal with that anymore and to save the money rather than buy clothes I vaguely despise.

$3200 a year on clothes? I doubt I've spent that much in the last 10 years combined. This really highlights the divide between those with higher and lower incomes. The lessons learned are things people who did not grow up affluent pretty much know by the time they're in their 20s and have to learn that it's ok to buy "investment pieces" once we do have the income because we are so accustomed to make do and do without.

Oh boy. I think I have a life’s supply of makeup at this point! I have noticed some of my lipsticks going bad but powder products last quite a while. Plus, as I get older I find I wear a lot less. After decades of applying foundation, I feel less desire to bother with it these days. I need to challenge myself to a no buy on makeup but I love trying new innovative products. Sigh. Thanks for the inspiration! I am going to find a way to make a no buy happen!

I used to buy makeup quicker than I could use it up, even when I wore a full face 4 days/week. These last couple years really helped me have a better grasp on what products I like and which ones were purchased based on hype and pretty packaging.

@@ColleenJoudrey Same with me! I have loved having a chance the past two years breaking some habits of mine. I don’t wear nearly as much as I used to and I love that. I’m still getting comfortable with less but I’m focusing on technique more and that is fun.

I dont really call it no buy. But i generally havent bought clothes in the last 5 years unless its for my job, to replace a beloved staple in my wardrobe, or if I'm looking for something very specific that I feel my closet is missing. Was on the market for a cream/light tan streetwear style oversize jacket or winderbreaker. I saw the perfect one at h&m and that was the only thing I bought. My rule for for buying any new items are- can I think of at least 3 outfits using this garment and my existing closet? If I cant make 3 outfits, do I have shoes that match to it perfectly? Bc if I dont even have shoes that match- not worth it. If I have to buy shoes to make that thing work, I dont need it. And is it too similar to anything else I already own? If it looks like something else I already have that I love and probably wouldn't wear over this one and doesnt need replacing, I don't need it.

I did this unintentionally during lockdown anyway. It has changed the way I shop for clothes and I’ve only purchased a handful of clothes since. The most expensive item I’ve bought since lockdown are trainers, (sneakers) to replace my old, fraying ones and even though they were in the sale, the price was eye watering to me, where as I know before I wouldn’t have really noticed.

I need to try that too. Maybe not a no-buy, but a less buy. I've spend way too much money on clothes these last couples of years. My problem is online shopping and specifically during the winter (I hate summer clothes). It's so easy and convenient and there's always something new calling my name, there are always sales, and I can never resist a nice warm grey sweater... I always justify it by saying that this is the 'non essential' thing I spend my money on (and skincare by I got better at that). I don't really like to go out, spending money on restaurants or bars, I don't have expensive hobbies, I don't have children to take care of... so it kind of okay but I admit I could make an effort and save more money. Time for a saving challenge! :)

I am coming to the end of a 6-month cloths shopping ban. I wanted it to be a year, but a red workout outfit stained much of my clothes. I am working hard to bleach the whites and they are recovering, but some of the colored pieces are not recovering. I'll likely have to replace them after 6 months are over because they are basics that I wear all the time. My husband bought me a llama wool sweater, socks and hat in Peru a month ago as gifts. Other than those two errors, I think I can make it to the 1-year mark (but does it really count if my husband bought me some items of clothing and I replaced a few things I ruined)? Still, I've reduced my consumption. I am also going through my closet and purging what I don't wear by giving them to girlfriends and good will. My closet is more organized and manageable now. I want to use this method for the whole house now!

same except now I invest in healthcare (dentist and gym) and long term solutions like laser treatments instead of wearing more makeup. I’m slowly saving up but even so I feel better knowing I won’t feel the need to wear concealer. Everything looks good on a good canvas. Lipstick looks nicer on healthy teeth, makeup looks nicer on healthy skin.

I’ve become more disciplined as well. One thing that has helped me is simply not seeing a lot of items I love anymore when I do look around. Also, the production of clothing - even from brands that we associate with “quality” - has gone down substantially. I can look at certain pieces and tell they won’t hold up long

whoa! this is not the only video people are basically saying "shopping problem means shopping clothing problem". Is it a norm? Clothing is something, which I don't spend a lot of money for. No way, I spent over 1k Euros within 6 months only on clothes. That doesn't mean tho, I don't spend a lot of money. I buy a lot of things for my hobbies: buying books (e-books) and mangas and artbooks. subscribing to multiple streaming platforms, supporting some KZreadrs via Patreon, buying yarns (love knitting), and checking some PC gadgets. I also love to cook many dishes from different regions and some ingredients are rather expensive. And I feel, I'm not the only female, who is not super enthusiastic to buy clothes but spend much MORE money on other stuff...

Due to a disability I am an early retiery, which has left me far beyond my countries poverty line. I come from an interesting family background because I come from a very wealthy family. My parents split from the rest of the family and we eventually went down to middle class and eventually became poor. So I experienced it all in a way. My grandma used to buy me baby clothes which could now pay my rent for a year. It is really crazy to me. These days I have an involuntary no spend year 😂 Since I stumble and fall a lot and have cats and a dog, I go through a lot of clothing. Because of that I don't buy high quality shirts or pants. What I do spend more on though are thick high quality pullovers, shoes and jackets. I personally also recommend getting second hand leather jackets. They are easy to take care of and almost indestructible, as well as really affordable. My last 2 cost 20€.

I gained a lot of weight in the past 2 years and I still save all my clothes since I intend to lose that weight again. It wouldn't make any sense to throw out very nice, expensive clothes that I love just to find out I might need new ones when I finally get to that weight again. Weight fluctuations have been a huge factor in losing money through clothes in my life, so I always save them now or lend them out to friends/family in the meantime if they need something. Why would you throw them out when you already know you'll need them again?

I really don’t understand the point of this comment and all the ones like it. Did you really think that we all have the same spending habits? Some people buy coffee everyday. Others buy lottery tickets every week. There’s is absolutely something you buy regularly that someone else never buys. So what is your point? That you’re somehow holier than the OP because you don’t buy one specific category of things?
