    I'm in MI Zone 6a.I have a Rosemary I have been bringing in for winter but she lives out on the porch during summer.She's done great on my table with a grow light for a few years.I was outside a week or two ago clearing up my flower beds and discovered a seedling Rosemary!I was so surprised.I can't wait to see if this baby makes it.The seedling is very close to the house wall and south facing.The wall has a heating vent in it.I think the baby found exactly the one spot it might have a chance.

    I was going to ask the same thing myself. I'm in coastal zone 7b. I've tried mulching all around the rosemary and covering it with two layers of protection, but I have no idea if this is going to work. Taking the rosemary indoors in a pot doesn't work very well either, as it always sheds its needles and dies whenever it's brought inside.

    Wait... BUY it you say, Jeff? I just take cuttings whenever I see some. I'll ask if needed, or just whip out my pocket knife. I have "rosemary radar" and wherever I go, Im on the lookout. l'm up to 10 now, and starting some new cuttings as we speak. I did buy ONE half dead rosemary plant on the dollar rack some years ago.. my first. I put it a waste spot near the road with a little compost and it took off . A drunk in a truck ran over it once, and today, it is about the size of a recliner chair. It really is one of my very favorite plants. David SC

    Great editing and timing :) I always love the high quality close up shots. I'm just about to start some rosemary seedlings, but I'm not used to mixing any sand into my potting mixes so far I tend to just have a pile of clay pebbles for drainage at the base of my pots and mix different qunaities of perlite in for drainage. Do you think its worth me going out my way to get used to mixing sand into compost mixes for drier plants like this?

    My Rosemary hasn't made it through the winter once where I live--even when I put it in my unheated garage. And this time it was especially bad because I had so much success growing it from seed. Now they're all pretty much dead.😭 You did answer my question as to what's going wrong. It's just too cold and not enough light in the garage. I have a plant light on my last survivor and it's hanging in there for now.

  • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

    @TheRipeTomatoFarms

    Yup, that's the key. Too cold to be outside, but they don't go dormant like strawberries and blueberries, so we can't just stick them in a dark garage or shed. They keep living. They almost need to be treated like a warm weather plant like a tomato or pepper.

    When you find the motivation to try again it sounds like you'll need to spend a few dollars first. Get yourself a pot, a bag of perlite coarse grained, and a bag of mulch if you don't already have something you can use as mulch growing around your property (I use bamboo leaves because free). Make sure you add enough perlite to the soil for proper drainage rates, as a matter of fact run drainage tests on the potted soil before planting. Remove the soil and revise the mixture until you can do a drainage test and are confident in the results. 100% use mulch because exposed soil over time naturally compacts at the surface and that deters drainage, mulch keeps the soil fluffy and promotes drainage. Whether growing from seed or from cutting, try using a water bottle with the bottom cut out and the top and label removed as a mini greenhouse effect for the beginning stages and then ween them off of it into being fully exposed to the sun (I've tried both seeds and cuttings side by side using this greenhouse effect vs not, from seed the one that sprouted way later got the bottle house and ended up growing significantly faster and branching everywhere and from cutting the ones with the bottle treatment grew air roots searching for the soil as well as buried roots compared to the cuttings without the bottle house which just created buried roots which goes to show me I should have removed less foliage or planted them deeper but the bottle house does promote more vigorous root growth.

    Hi Jeff. Your nuts. In a good way. I was ( yesterday) writing down what I've learned a bout herbs. And adding all the notes I've taken and read on to a separate herb notebook. And once again your timing is crazy with my need to know. I wasn't aware of so many varieties. So my questions... Do all varieties taste the same? Does it mean just the way it grows. I am confused about that. And I am also not knowing how deep/ size of a container I should be using. That goes not only with herbs. But vegtables. Some are evident of. But I will be doing indoors as much as I can. Thanks Jeff. Keep up the same wave length as me. Lol it's nuts.!!!! Take care

    GREAT question Donna....they actually don't! Some Rosemary types are purely ornamental too and not even really edible! So when buying them, I'd always read the description tag first and maybe do a smell/taste test even! For pots, usually a 7 or 10 gallon is recommended eventually....but I start all my young ones in 1 gallons first.

    Not always true that Rosemary doesn't like standing water. I grow Rosemary 3 different ways in containers. The first is in the standard potting soil like you covered, the second is in a fabric pot that I bottom feed with water twice a week and the last one I grow in a Kratky-type container hydroponic container. The hydroponic container grows the fastest followed by the fabric pot and then finally via the traditional method. For inground Rosemary, I'd absolutely follow what you've covered though.

    Rosemary doesn't like me. I'm in zone 9a in the middle of England but every rosemary plant I bought so far just dies on me. Oh and my garden is north facing so good luck of getting 6 hours plus of sun. Even tried it at the northern end of the garden where it's really sunny from midday to late afternoon. Nope, didn't like it. Still bought another quite big plant from the garden centre this last weekend. I must be mad 😂

    Tried both. They just get leggy, then brown and then just give up.

    Well, as it England we do get a lot of rain at least 70 % of the year and then none at all for weeks. That's the weather for you. 😔
