Hey Nicole - great video! I just purchased a large number of photos on Shutterstock (including some of yours) so perhaps I can give the perspective of a buyer. You are right that some topics are way over saturated. There are tons of photos of the Capitol Building but I probably only need one or two. On the other hand, there are almost no photos of DC restaurants, which I needed and had to go out and get myself. Bad captions is also a big problem. It was extremely helpful when photographers dated their photos in the caption. There are a lot of photos that are old but it's unclear exactly how old. Similarly it's a big help to know exactly where a photo was taken, including city and state, since that's the way I searched for photos.

Hey Rob, thanks for your helpful insights, I have pinned your comment to the top! I think what you say is very much in line with what I have noticed on Shutterstock myself. I have photographed pretty much every store and restaurant in my own neighborhood, but there's so many more in the region that are still unphotographed. While many people upload their prettiest photos of flowers, dogs, cats and clouds, what buyers are looking for is usually something different. It's definitely great to hear that confirmation from a buyer :)

which brings back to the most obvious point, upload what the clients Want and Need. I have pushed sliders way beyond my comfort zone, but this is what got uploaded. Interesting about dating the picture. Obviously it's done automatically on Editorial content, but i might have to look at some of my commercial where timeliness of capture might be important and add dates, or seasons...

I was like how the heck does she keep her place that spotless.......Glad I watched to the end. I've been doing stock photography for almost 5 years, didn't start taking it serious until the last year and its paying off. But..one of my specialties is dogs and they sell well for me, now, if that was the only thing in my port....I'd be eating ramen noodles full time. Variety variety variety, but don't be afraid to have a specialty. You have to keep it fun, wildlife is my passion, it doesn't sell well on Shutterstock, but does well on some of the other agencies. Love your videos Nicole!

Thank you so much for the kind words! Photographing animals is so much fun... I love doing that as well (but it doesn't sell well). But the fact that you get to hang out with cute dogs is all that matters right? And about the apartment... I wish mine looked like that! I loved how it was decorated and was decided to make my video there instead of my own messy apartment. Haha. Anyway, thanks for stopping by - have a great day!

I run a small design studio, and download hundreds of stock images for a variety of use. I took the time to review Nicole's portfolio on Shutterstock from the perspective of a buyer, and she is SPOT ON in her advice. Her portfolio is full of the sort of photos I have trouble finding when I need something specific. Examples of what I'm always looking for and coming up short are: 1. human subjects doing banking/finance in a way that looks natural and not posed, 2. human subjects seeking medical advice or assistance, 3. human subjects doing normal activities in a natural way. I never need someone doing laundry and sniffing it like they are smelling the fields of Avalon in their detergent. Don't mimic ads...those companies pay for shoots. 4. Older/eldery subjects in any regard. The boomers are aging...the average model in stock is like 27. There is a market for photos that just aren't widely available. So good luck for all would-be Shutterstock vendors. We rely on you! Just please don't upload any more pics of a latte with a heart drawn in the foam. Enough is enough, lol.

My main source for keywords is the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, a free download from the Library of Congress. They have over 7000 terms and are open to suggestions. I hope stock photographers will contact the TGM editors and make a great list even greater. I keep my copy in a Microsoft Access database.

Hi again, Nicole. Yes, I understand that if we choose our subjects wisely, we should get higher results sooner. But I believe that quantity is also important, so I'm trying to achieve something like a thousand, thousand and fifteen hundred and then start to be more objective in each photo. Am I making myself clear? And about the videos, I have not gotten there yet. My camera (Canon 6D MkI) makes Full HD movies, but I want to buy a 4K drone. First I need a 70-200 f2.8 and then the drone. One step at a time ... Thank you for your very helpful insights and sorry if I make any writing mistakes. I speak much better than I write.

Nicole, I love your videos. 3:40 The problem with shutterstock is that so many photos are rejected. The other day two of my photos were rejected because of file error. Then re-uploaded them, this time they said no " property release " . The same building ( it is an ancient church in public place in Cyprus ) is sold as commercial by other contributors. I would have uploaded it for the third time as editorial but it takes time to write all that captions and tags. I uploaded them on alamy instead and they were accepted. There are some inconsistencies when they decide to accept or reject a photo and it puts people off .

Hi Nicole, interesting video. Agree with everything except the tip to keyword the maximum 50, which may lead to spamming...but you're right that they need to be correct, so all depends on the images. Nice helpful list and you're quite charming in front of the camera! Look forward to more videos! All the best - Alex, brutally honest guy

I been doing Photography on Flikr for 3 years now! I use a Nikon P600 and it takes some good pics but I usually do Nature Photography such as birds or landscapes of parks, some city street views etc. Yet when I recently discovered from another KZread video about Shutter Stock! I uploaded my first 30 images and they were all rejected either because they were signed using my "Capture_This" or not big enough, or most had some sort of logo visible... this was very frustrating after having to re take a whole new photo portfolio just to use on their site!! what should I do, and is it worth it?

Can you please do a video on the type of camera that would be good for beginner photographers in Shutterstock? What quality do the photos need to be? How many megapixels should they be? Can you go over the technical aspects? Can you please give us some ideas on equipment that would be helpful to get? If you make a video like this, please let us know of some budget options that work effectively because it's not realistic for most of us to spend a lot of money on equipment when we're just starting out. But at the same time, the equipment that we get has to be efficient enough to do the job, so that hopefully at some point we will start making money. After that, we can possibly invest in more expensive equipment.
